Currently I'm working on creating a pan tilt head to mount an antenna on, with very high resolution, for my thesis.
I found some usefull projects as reference already but I have some questions especially about gearing.

Since I'm an electrical engineer, I have no experience whatsoever with mechanical thingies. Yet I have to design an almost entirely mechanical thing.
I've already searched the net a bit, but cant quite figure out how worm gears and worms function; how their reduction ratio can be calculated for example.

I know that it's [number of teeth wormwheel] / [number of starts worm]

Can someone explain what the number of starts means? I have to fabricate everything myself (3D printed), so hjow would I go about choosing wheel / worm ratio, and what determines the number of starts on a worm?

Maybe advice on what software to use to 3D design gearing / pan tilt head itself, for a complete dummy regarding mechanics? Thx!

Well if you think about gears you can work out the ratio from the number of teeth, this might seem intuitive but you need to know why.
If you think about toothless wheels it's the circumference that matters, twice the circumference means twice the distance and so half the number of turns.

A single start worm has one tooth, but the tooth is wound around the entire length. The tooth is then in a different configuration because the angle of the tooth means you have to angle the gear which is why a worm has to be perpendicular to the gear.
So the number of starts is just the number of teeth.

If you consider one turn of a one tooth worm gear advances the driven gear by one tooth you will see where the ratio comes from.

A two start worm has two teeth that are wound around the shaft.
If you look at the end of the shaft you see they start at opposite sides of the cylinder.
One turn of the worm will advance two teeth of the driven gear because the first start or tooth of the worm advanced one tooth of the driven gear while the second start advances the second tooth.
This is because the pitch is increased to accommodate the second start, the distance between the turns of the first start is double and so it skips a tooth of the driven gear which the second start takes up

Tldr: Starts is number of teeth
>>
Your ratio is the number of teeth in the worm wheel divided by the number of starts on the worm.

The ration you use will depend a bit on how fine of an adjustment you want to achieve, how much space you have for the parts, and how much load will be on them. If you have room for a 50mm diameter worm wheel and a 50kg load you probably want to steer toward a coarser ratio- the teeth in a 60:1 worm set will effectively be twice as thick/strong as a 120:1 set.

A smaller ration isn't automatically more precise than a higher one. But a higher ration will be more forgiving. In a 360:1 set one turn of the worm will move the worm wheel 1 degree. In a 60:1 it will move it 6 degrees. If your method of input to the worm is precise enough (servo with encoder for example) then you might be fine with a 60:1 or maybe even lower. What angular resolution are you shooting for on the worm wheel?
>>
>>958467
Ultimately the antenna mounted on the pan-tilt head will have to track very tiny RF chips over a fairly large distance.
The angular accuracy of the antenna (not up to me) could get as close as 0.1 degrees in theory, only if some advanced design technique actually works, else it's going to be around 2 degrees.
My aim for the resolution of the moving head is therefore around 0.1 degrees and I'm currently thinking of using a stepper motor, since servos have a limited travel, steppers can be geared down as much as I want becaue of their infinite degrees of travel,
At least, that's where I'm currently at with my research.

>>958464
Thanks, especially the part about the starts at the end of the shaft made me able to visualise it and I have a good idea about it now.

Still, would there be any advantage over for example a 60 tooth wormwheel and 1 starts of the worm vs 120 tooth wormwheel and 2 starts of the worm?
The ratio would be the same, but do more starts have some advantage?

Assuming you have at least a very basic understanding of pyrotechnics,

1 part hard pitch
4 parts antimony trisulfide
2 1/2 parts sulfur
4 1/2 parts ammonium chloride

for ignition material, use 1 part powdered charcoal to 4 parts sodium nitrate. Layer it under the smoke producing mixture.

Ok guys, im getting ready to live the nomad life.

How bad did i fuck up.

Im planning to build a small trailer i can haul with my bike or my car.
Any tips for insulation?

Country? Have fun getting tags on that "trailer". Where do you plan on charging those batteries? Overall I give you a 0/10 if this isn't a troll post and 2.7/10 if it is.

Oh this again.
Well to sum it up: its going to suck balls. Preparing food, going to the toilet, sleeping, cleaning yourself, having a social life, storing stuff; its all going to suck. Why are you doing this? Just apologize to your parents and they may let you move back in. Seriously though, you do not want this.
>>
>>958103
Wut? Its just my base. I dont need to charge batteries yet as i live in a house. I will worry about that later.

>>958106
Well at the very least its an experiment. Im doing this because i believe technology has advanced enough to the point where i can make all of those tedious tasks manageable.

Even if this doesnt work out, well, i only spent a little more than $500. Ill take it farther if it works out like i planned.

I'm 29 and buying a house for the first time. I never wanted the responsibility of taking care of a property myself, but now I'm at the age where it's just the right choice.

I know absolutely nothing about taking care of houses. My main question is what kinds of common maintenance tasks do I need to perform? Outside is partially brick, partially hardy plank siding, inside has hardwood floors and granite countertops, fireplace is NG, the gutters are pretty freaking high up (like 20 feet) and already dirty. Is it pretty safe to clean gutters at that height with no experience? The house is 10 years old with the original water heater, air conditioning units (2), and furnaces (2), so I guess those are nearing their end of average life...

Also, the current owners have two fucking cats and I'm super allergic to cats. How can I get bullshit cat dander out of my property?

Closing on the 16th... Any advice is welcome.

Have a home inspection done (you are doing that, right?) and it should point out any obvious problems or troublespots assuming your inspector has half a brain.

If the water heater and HVAC units check out, keep them. The water heater could be a concern from a failure/leak standpoint, but get the HVAC stuff serviced if you're worried about it breaking down. Do remember to replace filters on the furnaces.

Probably your biggest enemy is going to be water. You've already noted the gutters. Personally I keep trees the fuck away from any place I'm living; they give you nothing but trouble. They will fuck up your gutters if they are too close. You shouldn't have a problem cleaning them out with an extension ladder, have a buddy help you. Check around the perimeter to make sure water runs away from the house, not towards it. Again, your inspector should point stuff like that out.

As for cat hair, just clean like a motherfucker with a HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaner. And use good filters in the HVAC system.
>>
clean, a lot

-change the furnace filter(s) regularly during the time it's being used
-get the ducts cleaned to remove old dirt
-if there is a dryer, once you get a dryer, vacuum the lint out the dryer/vent pipe
-if there are drapes/curtains/anything that might . might want to have them cleaned

-I'd highly advise checking out the insulation situation asasap; that's one of the best investments you can make

-make sure you know where all the shutoff valves are for when the **** hits the fan

don't use paint, cut out and sew.

if you want to use paint i suggest you use water based paint. not oil based paint.

Is there a way to find a stud under sheet rock without a stud finder or baging 8+ holes into the wall
34 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
Not a home improvement person by any means but if I remember right you should be able to get a decent estimate by tapping lightly on the wall with a hammer or something. The sound over a stud should be noticeably different than hollow sheet rock. Not foolproof but a good help.
>>
No, get a stud finder.
>>
Theres a couple ways, but studfinders are like $5.

Get a strong magnet, once you find where the drywall screws are, you'll know thats where they're screwed into the stud. Hopefully the contractor wasn't as cheap as you and put a screw every foot.

never done it for the N64 but for other systems, all i did was unsolder the ROM, then put in an IC socket so i could plug in the same ROM or any other of the same size.

So I need to take out the circuit board and unsold error the rom on it

That's the gist of it, yes. You gotta make sure that the new rom is compatible with the donor board, so to speak. If you're gonna burn the same game on the new IC then you've nothing to worry about.

I want to make a small reflecting telescope. But I don't want to grind the reflector. It will be tiny, maybe 4" / ~10cm diameter.

Is there a cheapass source for these things?

I'd need a primary and secondary reflector for a 4"x70" telescope. I don't care if it's window glass, neither surface nor temperature stability will have to be very good. It's more a proof of concept and a toy.

I've considered just getting a toy telescope and cannibalizing its mirrors. But I haven't found one cheap enough.

Check the cloudynights.com classifieds such things aren't uncommon there, eBay may have something too, plenty of cheap mirrors and such from China.
Though desu grinding such a small mirror, especially at a long focal length, will take very little time as it will be a pretty flat mirror, and there will be little need to parabolize it. Even basic window glass of some thickness would be fine.

I got a 4.5" reflector with a secondary for $20 on eBay.

Does anyone here make their own jerky?

I learned how to make it on a trip to America and got the idea to start making it and sell it in the UK. The only issue I could see is the meat I was told to use is so expensive I'd struggle to break even. I was told to use eye of round, is there a cheaper cut that will result in the same quality jerky?

Over here a 50g bag costs about £2.30 in stores, how close could I get to that price with homemade?

You can really use just about any cut of meat you want. With fatter cuts, you'll have to trim more fat off, though. Top round and bottom round work well. Experiment with whatever you can find. Even if it isn't optimal, it should still be edible.

I don't know about the UK, but in the US random cuts of meat go on sale pretty often.

I just hope the quality of UK beef is better than the quality of UK sausages~

>Over here a 50g bag costs about £2.30 in stores, how close could I get to that price with homemade?

I can't do the math right now, but buy some meat, weigh it, and then weigh the resulting jerky. Frankly, in my experience, homemade jerky isn't much cheaper than buying store bought jerky.
>>
>>948076
You can't just make jerky and sell it. In order to sell foodstuffs in the UK there are significant regulatory hurdles negotiate. You can't easily just do it in your home kitchen. Do you have substantial financial backing for this venture?

Allegedly these are supposed to be bullet proof (not that that would stop brain trauma but still)

I have been interestimg in making a helmet like pic related, and then extending what I learn to make an entire suit. Apparently they use 3a Kevlar.

Where can I find more on this topic? I can only find kids making batman molds on youtube and It's pretty frustrating.

I have these spots on my ceiling. I think they're wet spots, but I'm not sure of what. They've been there for years, and when I first noticed them, I heard an irritating persistent bumping sound, that stopped when I tapped the ceiling with a metal water bottle.

Turns out we had rats, and they have since been killed with rat traps, but I still have these spots on my ceiling. Have I been imbibing moldy/poisonous rat germs in my body?

I don't think it's fluid from a carcus since the mouse traps that killed them were not laid above my room. But it would be very difficult to investigate because the section directly above my room in the attic is a bunch of puff, that I would need to wedge myself through.

Is there any possible solution? Should I make an effort to stop sleeping or breathing in my own room in the mean time?

I don't know how I would begin to clean it. Scrub the ceiling? I'm pretty I'll tear through it, and even though I said it's probably not a rat carcus, I don't know how I would handle a dead rat falling through my ceiling.

Scrubbing from above as stated earlier isn't a real option. without getting through the puffs in my attic.

if it really does have dead rat juice soaked through, no scrubbing is going to do it

it shouldn't be that difficult to cut it out and make a patch to fit
>>
>>957642
Should I try to get as much of my ceiling replaced as possible? Does dead rat juice have poisonous fumes and has it likely been extending its radius beyond what I can see from below?
>>
>>957646
if there isn't any other visible damage, I don't think that would be necessary

no, I slightly doubt it...
does it smell? is it actually wet? if there was a rotting rat, I would think you'd know it for sure....dead mice stink

if it's a water leak, that would be something to be worried about

cut it out and find out what made the stain
