My bf punched a hole in the bedroom door of our rental. We're moving out soon and want to repair it in a way that will leave it looking pretty good. It's a shitty apartment so very slight discoloration is okay and wont stand out- just want it to look good. It's made of a crappy, lightweight cardboard material.
It's looking like a $40 hollow core door is going to be cheaper than repairing it with mesh, spackle, and paint considering id have to buy all those.

Why is the cooling pan copper? Realistically all that needs be copper is what the alcohol (vapour) touches. That said, making the pot copper is a good thing, just not strictly necessary.
To keep your pipe cold just use a steady supply of cold water. Since I don't see a drain in your tray, maybe use ice bath instead. That said, you won't get great yields with a pot still, and you should probably look into reflux stills, or at least pack your worm with copper scrap on the uphill part.

Hey /diy/, got a small project coming up that involves some 3D printed metal involved. Since it's a small sized print though the metal color will be mostly bronze while it is a silver metallic look I'm after. I wanted to spray paint it but since this is an item I would be in contact with a lot and rubbing from use I was concerned the spray paint could come off. How have your experiences with spray paint on projects gone? What do you find helps them last longer after constant use?
Powder coat it if you want. It will look better than cheap paint and it lasts longer.

What are some cheaper PLC's that can handle higher direct output amps then this CLICK PLC? Pic related can handle .3 amps but the electromagnet I have in mind will run .33 amps. Would this work, or would I destroy the PLC? 24VDC.

PLCs! Finally a topic I can talk about... I was a project engineer/manager at my previous job and spent a ton of time on PLCs (technically PACs).
Just use a relay. They are super cheap. You can get small ones in whatever voltage you need. How fast do you intend on switching the device? Large SSRs are <$10 on Amazon and you can get various small relays from whatever electronics supplier you like.
Transistors are fine, but I think relays are better because the available formfactors lend to control panels better and they are widely recognized in industry. Always try to avoid rigging shit together.
My recommendation for a CHEAP PLC is Velocio (http://velocio.net). They have some really affordable shit with some decent modules (like a relay board). I have one and it's good for the price. You can do Ladder programming or flow charts. It even lets you NAME variables and inputs/ouputs.
The software is kind of clunky, but it's functional. They are a small company, but their support is good.
I've used Automation Direct's DirectLogic controller before and fucking HATE it. I don't have any experience with the CLICK stuff.
I have a lot more experience with Opto22 (awesome product) and Allen Bradley CompactLogix though.

The best way to melt plastic?
I want melt plastic to slop it into a mold. I don't know anything about melt things.
I can't just burn the plastic and drop the drops into the mould, right? this makes more hard the plastic, right?
Because I'm looking a way to melt the plastic but without change the softness of the plastic when this turn cool.
Burning usually changes chemical and physical structure of the plastic, the easy way is using a heat gun and being really cautious with the heat applied.

An oldish, all-steel saw blade. Clearly made of a nice steel, judging by how a file has trouble shaping it, and how it leaves scratches in drill bits. But too bad, it's made for a wacky arbor size and even if it were 5/8" I would never put it in my table saw because it is outgunned by today's carbide saw blades obviously.
I had already ground the tips off the blade for easy handling before I took this pic.
Mounted in a vise with a piece of scrap wood to serve as a straight edge.
I took light passes with the grinder to avoid bluing the tool and drawing its temper.
Finished with the first cut. I was happy with how I didn't seem to overheat the metal at all, but now I suspect the teeth are hardened to a much greater extent than the body of the sawblade. Well, this would make sense, I guess, but disappointing.
I think I might want to heat treat the steel after I cut out the blanks now.

what would the best way to measure speed be using a speed sensor hooked up to some kind of microcontroller (ie, the arduino.) Most likely going to hook it up to one of my own avr boards that I made, but since it uses the same chip as the arduino it should be fine.

Stick optical encoder on shaft (can be literally just a piece of transparency paper and the optointerrupter from a mouse's scroll wheel). Measure time between pulses. Determine speed by multiplying frequency of pulses by circumference of wheel.

im working on a Pip Boy model and im adding finishing touches, it has a satin finish, and i need to make it look worn and dirty like in-game, all ive got are cotton balls, paint brushes/etc, and light grey and black paint. any tips?
base coat of light gray primer, covered with the topcoat color of choice. Finish it up nice and then hit it with some 600 or 800 grit sandpaper in key places. Corners, edges, etc are great locations.
Lightly dab on dirt colored paint with a torn sponge or crumpled up newspaper
ive been using a cotton ball, would that work? there are some places the satin base has rubbed off through wear and tear, im painting those spots with the dirt/grunge paint. looks good so far
