I've built LED goggles myself, and its a lot easier to see through them than you'd think. You need to prevent light from shining in your eyes by painting the backs of the LEDs or use something like the 5050s that already have a backing. After that it's no different than seeing through those venetian blind shades. Your brain just filters out obstructions close to your eyeballs.

He might not. He might look down or have mirrors that look down. They might have directions and shit on the stage for them to follow and all he needs to do most of the time is stand at his keyboard or whatever. Even easier when it's not a live show.

What would be the best way to build Power Ranger Armour?

Im thinking more riot gear then bullet proof.

What colour of Power Ranger would you be?

or would you rather be a different kind of super hero?

Ive only been lurking a few weeks

Didnt realize these were a thing
>>
>>950337
they have been ever since the chris nolan batman movies

what we've boiled it down to is:

>no you cant be a superhero
>the technology is not there yet and won't be for another 20-30 years
>super powers aren't real
>genetic mutations are not what hollywood says
>if aliens are real, they're not humanoid
>that amount of radiation will kill you
>spider bites are deadly

if you want to help your community and be sort of like batman, join or start a neighborhood watch.

>bored at work
>find a suitcase lock
>fashion crude lockpicks out of a paperclip
>fiddle with it for 30 minutes
>click
>it unlocks
>instantly hooked

Where do I go from here? I've picked it open like 30 times now.

Also, lockpicking general.

Hey /diy/, /an/ here. I have an LED fixture over my reef tank, and wondered if it would be possible to create/buy a device that will slowly make my light brighter throughout the day, peaking at noon, and then going back down slowly til nightfall (basically a dimmer setting on a timer. They have things like this already called apex controllers (other brands but thats the biggest) but their fuckin expensive, and i always prefer to do it myself. Anyone got any interesting ideas? Pic related, my reef.

What are some good materials I can use to insulate heat from standard metal vise jaws that won't melt or burn from very high temperatures, but will hold up under clamping pressure? This is to prevent the entire vise from acting as a giant heatsink when heating parts with a torch.

Ideally, it would be an insulator with the ability to hold up under temperature like ceramic, but can yield under pressure and is tough, like rubber. Basically, is there such thing as rubber that won't burn?

So I have a heavily modded original Xbox v1.1 mobo with executer 2 chip and lcd front panel I made about 10 years ago. Custom paint job clear case with air filters and USB ports totally turned into a piece of functioning art. Now a days the processing power of this Xbox fits in your pocket, so my question is what to do with it. It still runs Xbmc and everything functions it has a pretty complete history of console and arcade games, just taking up too much shelf space. Wat do

Right of the bat I see the "Art Commision" box has the text tilted too much to the right side.

The "my comics" is decent but I would like a function that would allow me to go all the way back to the start

The "art commision" section is ok, but there are empty boxes in between some of the choices.

When I go under "my art" it shows a slide show, from my perspective, I would be more interested in a bigger gallery of pictures so I don't have to scroll through through every picture to find something I like.

When I got to the forums it says "No sign up require!" a little typo that annoys me.

The Faq is nice, I like the slides.

Would a design like this withstand a 350lb man flopping down on it? I want to build my Dad a new bed for Father's Day but he's a pretty big guy. >I have absolutely zero /diy/ experience but I'm just a broke 22 year old.

Look up the cost of wood before you go any farther, especially if you are going to double up on stuff.

Also you need to think about whether he is using a box spring or just a mattress
>>
>>951431

He has a box spring and a bed. Both are literally older than me. He has one of those $50 metal frames you can buy at the Dollar Store or Big Lots that looks like shit.

I have a budget of $200. I doubt I could buy a frame for that cheap that supports fatties.
>>
If you're serious about building the frame with 2x4's then put them on edge AKA skinny side facing up for added strength. or if you wanna stick to the skinny slats (like in your pic) then make sure you beef up the middle support. probably should be ok just by doing that.

Hey /diy/ers,
I'm looking to build a circuit to control and drive high-power single LEDs. I'm looking at LEDs with stated 1A maximum currents, but looking to build a circuit that can provide sustained operation at up to 1A, as well as pulsed operation at up to around 10x that (pulses of a few ms, so with an adequately low duty cycles I should be able to operate well over max specs for the LEDs without burning them out).

The problem is, I have no real knowledge of electronics beyond basic V=IR fundamentals. I'm trying my best here, but it's quite possible I'm approaching this problem in a very stupid way.

To control this, I'll be interfacing everything with a scientific instrument that has a number of active-low TTL output pins. I'm looking to use one pin to trigger the pulses, and (ideally) a few others to directly control the driven current. The CAT4101 LED control chip I'm looking to use pulls down current related to the current through the RSET pin, so is normally controlled by changing the resistance between RSET and GND.

Question 1: Given I have a bunch of output pins to interface with and no real way to output serial communications, is there a simple way of controlling a variable resistor (as shown) with parallel digital inputs? If not, what should I be doing instead?

Question 2: I'll be needing a 5V power supply that can do up to 10A. I'm not having much luck finding these; am I an idiot using the wrong search terms, or should I just find an old computer PSU and run things through the 5V rail?

/a poor confused scienceanon who needs help making technology work

1. Digital potentiometers

2. Yes, a 'real' 5V 10A supply is pretty pricey. An old PSU would be most economical.
>>
>>950983
1a. There are things called digital potentiometers.
1b. If you just need few bits worth of control, you could use some mosfets to pull one (or more) of several RSET resistors to ground.
2. Yeah, a computer PSU would be an easy solution. Dunno what's wrong with your search terms, but you could check some big distributor's like Farnell's catalogue to get an idea what is available - assuming you aren't happy with PC psu. And then optionally buy shit from elsewhere.
>>
>>950989
>>950990
Thanks guys. I've looked at a few digital potentiometers, but they all seem to either have increment/decrement control, or are controlled by serial protocols that I don't really want to code into my instruments by hand. If I want to be able to call $SomeResistance from parallel outputs (4-6 bits would be fine), what's my best option? I could probably use an arduino to translate to I2C, but are there better options?

i went to cancun years ago, stayed in one of the older shitty little villas, probably nice back in the 50's, but anyway, one of the maintenance workers lived under the stairs leading up to one of the rooms. surreal looking in there and seeing all his stuff. he had pet iguanas everywhere.

hi /diy/,

I recently used a raspberry pi v2 in my computer architecture course(because MASM doesn't really let you get that low level anymore), and now i'm wondering what I should do with it, now that the course is over.

Does /diy/ have any project recommendations? What should I do with it?

Also, share your projects if you have any.

/diy/ is slow no need to bump.

The first inclination that people generally have is to turn it into a media server. Plug in a usb hard drive, and either connect to wireless or Ethernet. This is never a good idea because the pi only has a single channel usb and the Ethernet port is going through it so every communication with need to go through the same usb channel 2 in order to get there even on a fast Ethernet connection in practice i had trouble even streaming 480p video from one.

Best use is to use it like you would an arduino with network functionality and more processing power. Look at the pin-out see if you have some hardware you want to interact with and see where it takes you.

I have been enjoying mine as an octopi 3d print server if you have a 3d printer might be worth it to use it there.

My sink has been broken for awhile, it often pops out of it's mount because one of the screws in missing and the only other screw's mount is snapped. The one screw left is a bit stripped but even if I got it out there's not enough room to get in to screw it onto the other side.

Any ideas? Would some kind of epoxy be viable?

An idea discussed in >>>/biz/1106359 led to the idea in pic related, which I'll describe in detail since I am terrible with a pen.

The idea is to dig a lake which mostly lies only a few cm below sea level (it would curve downwards towards the middle), so that water evaporates rapidly, with the intention of increasing local rainfall.

This lake would be connected to the ocean by an overground channel and an underground tunnel. As water evaporates, the overground channel replaces it with seawater, and the salt left behind by evaporating water would cause water at the bottom to become very saline and thus sink through the tunnel to return to the ocean.
16 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
What's the point of the tunnel? As long as there's a connection between the pond and ocean tides are going to keep the salt levels in the pond at the same level as the ocean.
>>
>>950965
Are you sure? One would need a two way flow in one river that way.
>>
>>950962
There's nothing wrong with it at a fundamental level, but in practice it may be difficult to achieve adequate circulation with density/hydrostatic pressure alone. If the flat in question was located right on the coast then sure, but over scores of km to get to an arid inland location in need of hydration, a few cm isn't going to cut it. Free-flowing aqueducts generally have gradients of 1 in 5000 or steeper.

Also, basins that are below sea level (where such a proposal would obviously be located) are always separated from the ocean by elevated terrain (otherwise they would already be flooded), so digging an open channel over ground would require some serious digging. Modern aqueducts generally use pumping/turbine stations to lift/lower the water over the terrain instead, and in mountainous areas employ pressurized pipelines instead of open channels. In practice, your proposal would need to employ a similar arrangement to be viable.
