What do you think about this kind of housing ?

Exept the master race comfy style, do you think it will have real environmental and economic benefit ?

the market prices are over the top for the commercially available ones

they require far less energy to heat/cool so they are, as consumption go, environmentally friendly, especially if the build uses recycled materials

the same goes for the economic benefit if you do it yourself or find a craftsmen who will not skin you alive for it

the permits however are a bitch, that's why most are build on top of trailers, so they can be considered non-permanent

as to what I think.... well at some point of your life you most probably get children, thus making the place inadequate

even if you plan to stay single, at older age the stairs to and from the bed will become troublesome

all, in all it's interesting choice for a part of your life
>>
>>954667
And in regards the insulation ? It's really sure ?
>>
>>954659
Call them what they are: mobile homes. They are fancy trailers for hipsters that don't want to live in a trailer park. Shitty ones at that. They cost a lot more per square foot unless you get a bunch of the materials free and you consider the labor you dump into it worthless. Or you can spend $50k building one that looks like a real house or you can spend $25k and buy one prefabricated that has a real kitchen, real bathroom and is 3 times larger. If cost really is the issue just get a mobile. Lets be real though; its all about looks and not being labeled a trailer park dweller.

From my limited knowledge in being able to describe this, i scored a electrothermal motor? You can see it is/was used for spinning a fan.

You see, my parents put in a new roof, and that included removing the attic fan for a ridge vent instead.

They were going to chuck this into the dumpster but i told them not to, and i myself killed the power to the circuit, tested the line to make sure it wasn't hot, and finally snipped the wire myself and removed it (though the entire housing had to be pulled out from the roof of the house)... but i made these guys' lives easier in removing it.

I did that so they wouldnt throw it off the roof and instead hand it to me off the ladder. Which they did.

Anyway -- if i wanted to re-use this, what applications do you guys think are possible? It was an attic fan which ran really well since 1997, and if you heard it running you'd think it was powerful. I can't say that it is or that it isn't -- only that it was reliable.

More pics coming.

The capacitor.

I forgot to mention that this was hooked up to a three-way switch. It was supposed to be thermally activated.

But it was actually hooked up to a power switch in the wall (like a light switch). We flick the switch, and the attic was cool in a matter of minutes.

am i soldering right, does this look good? it feels strong enough
16 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Yes, they look good. You don't need to use that much solder though.
>>
>>954576
Soldering electronics isn't about mechanical strength, but conductivity. Components which need to be physically held in place (sockets for example) are usually designed so that their pins have an interference fit with the holes in the PCB.

To answer your question though, yes those solder joins look good.
>>
>>954580
Well I just soldered some pins on it so I can use it on a breadboard, so I felt like some strength there would be nice to have when removing and inserting and stuff.

Thanks guys!

hey guys, I picked up some kinda rusty but sturdy music stands a few weeks ago and I'm getting around to getting the paint and rust off with a stripper wheel. I was going to paint one dark blue and the other turquoise. any of you guys have any cooler ideas for music stands?

What a waste of time, data, electricity, broadband usage, leds, optic nerve life span and energy.

Fuck you OP it's your music stand. It aint like it's got a surface you can express anything on, just paint it MLP colours and get a grip on your life.
>>
I think matte black music stands look great.

>>954485
don't be an asshole, dude. I'm just asking if anyone has any better ideas than what I was planning to do, before I get around to painting it.

How can I measure from an image? I haven't been to the actual unit I'm moving into but they sent me this picture of where the fridge is supposed to go.

How can I measure the space? Any ideas?

Greetings, first time here.

Did anyone here try to build 100% solar powered Raspberry Pi?

It crossed my mind and powering it using solar power isn't too hard, main problem is how to power it 24/7, i'd obviously need some kind of battery for that. I'm interested in options, what batteries to look for, what to avoid, any recommendations?

Is there any site with some specific math for my problem?

Those 2200mA phone charger batteries are used as a back on my Rpi server. Not solar powered but for $10 you cant beat almost 6 hours of battery life and you can daisy chain them together

Hello, I need some ideas here. I have a room that has this ugly wood on the ceiling. It also has 2 of these diagonal walls. I hate it, because it does not match the colours of my furniture in the room at all and I want something white instead so the room does not feel as dark, because I barely get any natural light at all.
I don't want to paint it, because that would take years and would look messy.
I can't just hang fabric on there, it's illegal here in Germany I believe, because of fire hazard.
Can I just screw large, flat, thin wood panels onto it or will that be too heavy?

I'd be happy if I at least found a solution for the diagonal walls (how do you call that in english?) for now.
Bonus points if it's cheap and I can install it on my own.

unprinted corflute? you seem to be too lazy to plasterboard the thing.
>>
>>954241
That would be my answer, 9mm plasterboard and skim.

You could even get away with board and tape and joint then seal paint if you wanted to save the cost of a plasterer.
>>
>>954241
>>954254
Well I would do that, but people told me I would get big mold problems underneath if I just cover it.

I'd like to become a hermit but am a Type 1 insulin dependent diabetic.

Could anyone talk me through how I'd go about harvesting various animal's pancreases and making them into something that I could inject? It won't be as good as pharmaceutical, I know, but you can only stockpile so much of that stuff and it needs to be kept in a fridge anyway.

Or if anyone has any other ideas about how I could get around the problem of needing insulin, would love to hear.

If your type one, your done for. Just hope that when it all goes out of date it still works XD

you would need about 1 pig/cow a day man, this may fuck you up because of immune reactions.

This is not doable, the only way it would be possible is if you would get your hands on the genetically "enhanced" yeasts or bacteria that make the insulin precursor and do the rest of the chemistry in your cave/hut/forest/bunker/basement.
Since insulin is a protein it wil denature if heated ,exposed to light, radiation, an acid, base or an organic solvent.
For insulin the denaturing temperature is about 70°C.(1) This poses a serious problem for DIY jobs since you can not sterilize it before injection. Almost all sterilization methods will destroy the insulin.

I am pretty sure that you will kill yourself if you try DIY insulin. DIY penicillin may work but DIY insulin is a lot harder.

My grandpa had an "old friend who owed him a favor" come by and repoint the mortar a few years ago on his house. The man did a shitty job, and now it looks like shit. Is it fucked? Can the mortar be removed or scraped away?

>can the mortar be removed or scraped away?

Try it. If he did a shitty job it is possible his mix was shit too.

It could be anywhere between:

>light tap with hammer and it all comes off

Or

>need grinder to remove 1/4" of the brick surface

The only way to know is to go ahead and try.
>>
>>953897

Also. The mortar looked good in the first place. What is the point of wasting a favor on that bullshit?
>>
>>953897
>>953898
Back in the 70s there was a makeshif shed attached to the back of the house that was removed in the 90s. The mortar was FINE but it was just discolored slightly compared to the one around it.. Apparently my grandpa though it was crumbling so he had a favor done that was unecessary in the first place. Now it looks like an outline of the shed, and just shit in general.

Ill see what I can do

delete this thread and search the catalog for "questions that don't deserve their own thread" or "qtddtot"
if no such thread exists, make one and ask your questions there

Hi /diy/

I have a problem with fruit flies, I've made some traps out of empty beer and tomato tins with cling film over the top and holes poked in with a fork, is there a better method? It seems to work ok, but I noticed a fly climbing back out of the trap, and there are still new flies flying about

sorry, no camera to take pics with

I bought a foreclosure it was empty a few years. The water has done damage to the main floor ceiling. Slat and lath falling down on main floor and the beam in the basement has mold etc. Got up on the roof and the leaves had basically composted into dirt. Threw it all down. For some reason I thought maybe it was the mortar in the chimney; friend helps me patch the chimney. That wasn't it. Going to post several pictures of the actual situation.

This is behind the chimney. This is mostly to show the dirt and why there is not that normal flashing setup to divert the water to both sides of the chimney.

first off clean all that shit off your roof it won't be doing your shingles and favours. second leaks can be hard to track down but start by looking in the attic to see where it might be coming in from. if you find a suspicious spot you can go back on the roof and put some tar around the area
>>
the shingles don't look too bad

it might have leaked from all that junk holding/pooling water

clean it off, let it dry completely, and look for holes or cracks....if you see any, fill with foundation coating and or asphalt crack filler

tried different roof products before and they were crap compared to the driveway stuff; applied it years ago and it still there and still hard
