Hey, /diy/!

I just got done rebuilding a '93 Virago XV535 motor for my friend, however I am at a standstill when it comes to torquing down the cylinders. The Haynes Manual lists the torque specs however I don't find them to be correct. The manual lists them as 8mm and 10mm nuts, but the nuts fit 14mm and 17mm sockets.

Is there something I am missing? Am I looking at the wrong specs? Yes I am in the XV535 section of the manual. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not really an expert, tho I'd try searching for 'screw torque chart' for general torque specs unless someone here has more info.

What it means is that the bolts are M8 or M10, i.e. 10mm across the threads.

Hey /diy/,
Need help, moved into a new flat and the radiator isn't connected, it's pretty cold today and I have no idea how to connect this thing up as I have almost no electrical knowledge.

Pic related, it's the cables.
Thanks ahead for helping a bro out.

No ground wire? This is not how this is supposed to work OP. Just buy a power plug from the hardware store and wire it up properly rather than trying to twist mains voltage wires together.
>>
OP Here, thanks for the replay, as I said I have no idea, these wires are the ones that are both behind the radiator and no plug sockets are around, so I figured they were to be connected up this way. :/

Hey guys
I don't know if you're familiar with the world of music so I'm gonna make it simple. I bought a new mic for my strat and need to make the bottom cavity larger in order for it to fit in. I don't own a router and asking a profesional to do it would be commiting economic suicide for me.
So I was wondering how risky it would be to chisel the hole considering the fact that the wood is varnished
I hope you can help me DIY guys !

Don't have to know much about music to know that you are retarded for wanting to put a mic on a solid body instrument.

Why don't you just install a new pickup OP?
>>
>>951721
That's what I meant by mic (the humbucker in the pic is the pickup we're talking about)
>>
>>951719
Seems like a bad idea even if you had a router. If you dont care about the guitar just go for it and never look back. Worst case it'll sound and look like shit and you'll have to fix it more.

hi guy

can anyone tell me how to turn a dual op amp into a single chanel op amp ?

thank you

>>948645
This is a dumb question. Connect one op-amp as usual, connect both inputs on the other op-amp to GND.
>>
>>948645
Leave the unneeded opamp unconnected.
Or better, connect its OUT to IN(-) and IN(+) to ground.
>>
>>948650
i'd like to bridge them to have more power.

I need help figuring out if there's a toxin in my room and what it is. The house is old as fuck so it could be anything but I know pretty much everything has been repainted, there's water damage though pretty bad, the insulation and walls have all been replaced in the past 10 years.

I noticed when I go in my room my mouth dries out more and my breath smells bad kinda and it smells way more like my breath smells twice as strong. I never noticed until I brought my cat in here and he started licking himself and I could smell his breath from far away. I've been waking up kinda sick to my stomach and feeling really sluggish and shitty. My health is pretty bad too like paleness and sickness.

Didn't you make this same thread just a while ago?
>>
It's probably in your head. Since you mentioned water damage I'll say mold though. There's tests someone can do to find out what's in the room. That's pretty much the only way to know for sure.
>>
>>951571
Why remake thread?

It sound like poor ventilation, just open all the fucking windows and the problem will go away, literally.

Legitimately did not expect a response that fast.

Do the math, get AC, pay your mom for the power.

New to electronics. Anybody have any idea why I can't fix this fish tank lid? It has two fluorescent bulbs.

I've replaced;
- The bulbs themselves
- The lamp starter switches.
- The ballast.

.. and it still won't work.

If I touch the lamps to power, then they flicker so I know there's power. As soon as I put them in the fittings properly they switch off. Which part is going wrong here?

Sorry for bad quality photo/diagram.

>>951663
Being in a fish tank lid I'd suspect corroded sockets.
>>
>>951687
Nope. Sockets are fine. I've used a voltmeter on the last starter switch in the circuit & get a reading, so presumably (unless I'm wrong) that means that at least the first bulb should be lit up?
>>
>>951663
I've only changed out 3 ballasts before and I could have sworn that the lamps were parralel with ballast? Not sure if that would matter

Anyone got any tips for building industrial style furniture? Basically wood planks and metal bars, but I don't know much about where to find parts, how to put them all together and what's the best way of doing it. Cheers

You can buy metal scrap at home depot. Pic related looks like a few pieces of 1 1/2in Angle iron, and some flat bar for supports. Weld the pieces together, then drill holes and attach the wood. Fairly straightforward.
>>
>>950940
their metal prices are too high. scrap prices are in the lows right now, you could buy a truckload at your local scrap dealer for 10 bucks probably. straight stuff too.
>>
>>950785

Use wood planks and metal bars.

Do you know how to weld?

Does anyone here study or work in product design? I asked on /sci/ but they were all cold, hard engineering and /g/ only seems to do EE or CS so maybe it's a /diy/ kind of degree. I got interested because I found out that all my attempts at designing a product to sell is an actual career field called surprise, surprise product design. I could do engineering but product design seems a) more fun and b) more geared towards self employment plus it's available at my local university whereas engineering isn't. However engineering seems to have more jobs and pay more. Thoughts?

either study mechanical engineering or industrial design.

Hey /diy/ occansional lurker here so forgive me if I am coming to the wrong board. I took my bike to the shop to get a basket put on it. The next morning i left for work and there was a horrible vibrating/buzzing/grinding noise coming from the rear tire where the basket is mounted. My intitial thought was it was the mount acting as a fender as the snow hitting the mount. Any /diy/ to fix this? Pic realted is the bike

First of all if this isn't a troll question. use your god damn brain. find where its rattling at and stuff some cardboard under it.

second of all, you're clearly using a mountain bike as a road bike. stop pls. trade on craigslist for a road bike.

Could I get some advice/input/ideas on converting this wine fridge into a chicken egg incubator?
What do you think is the easiest way to go about doing it?

The power cord on the one I have is cut off, I have to attach a new one, other than that, I am pretty sure the thermostat works, but the cooling element is busted, according to what the people said.

Thanks in advance.

I have a similar question, I have an oven I need to convert into a freezer.
>>
>>951963
Freezers use a/c units, oven's don't. You're better off spending a hundy on a freezer. Probably find one for $40 on craigslist.

After spending more money than I can count, breaking and buying new earphones every 3 months I decided that I will end this sequence once for all by creating my own earphone, better, cheaper and that I will be able to fix more easily. But I do not know exactly where to start considering I want to make a phone 7.1 and want to cancel noise in the microphone and control the volume.

What I have so far that I can use:
Several broken headphones
one multiturn potentiometer
a cable HDMI (which has 16 wires inside)
a soldering iron
60w Soldering iron

What should I buy? and how can I make it come true?

I write as a hobby; I'm trying to figure out what it would actually take to turn a computer running on Mac OS 10 to become the world's most expensive paperweight. The character I'm writing basically got his techno-terrorist start of darkness by completely shutting down his shitty college apartment's computer lab. I know what System 32 does; but what's the Mac equivalent?

OSX is basically a UNIX variant, and obviously there are different ways to manhandle one. Deleting /lib or /bin (if there is root access) would probably fuck up the system. Permanently bricking? That's another question.
>>
>>951216
High voltage surge over any components. I remember macs have a shitty chip that prevents them from overheating by slowing down procesor speed to a crawl. And this chip can be overheated with a few simple comands. Once it overheats the os wont boot.
As to how this can be done i won't tell you since "I'm a writter" is code for I don't want to be called out on intent to commit a crime. But google may help

I don't know much about radios. I have a business and want to hire a security guard. I need radio transmission up to 50 miles. What do you suggest I buy? Flat land, no mountains.

50 miles? Look at Sprint or AT&T phones with a PTT (Push To Talk) function.

Handhelds aren't going to get you a 50 mile range without base stations and/or repeaters. So use the cellular network.
>>
>>950833
Can you use those in cars? Two will have patrol cars. Holy fuck they still have push to talk? I was thinking something more professional
