Hi /diy/,

I'm a waiter at a restaurant and non-slip shoes save me from falling down several times a week. The kitchen at work is slick, greasy and I often tread over bits of melting ice on the floor. There are lots of shoes designed specifically for this purpose, but many of them are super ugly.

I have this super comfy pair of boots that I would love to wear at work, but they are definitely not slip-resistant. I would like to apply a little /diy/ magic to the bottom of these boots if possible.

I have tried buying adhesive supposed non-slip stickers on the tread, these were cheap from a drug store. Tried them on my own wet kitchen floor at home, they don't help at all and peel off easy. I read some pretty bad online reviews for products like "Bear Ground Shoe Grip Adhesive Spray."

It may be a lost cause, given the raised rubber tread these boots have on them. I might go look around a Home Depot and see if I can find some sort of better product for this purpose. Anyone have advise on this? Your experience would be appreciated, even if your solution is some kind of wierd homr baked method!

The tread in question
>>
yes. advice is a noun, advise is a verb

if it keeps you from injuring yourself, wear ugly shoes

old bike tire tread can be attached to the bottom as kind of a re-treading...I did it on a pair several years ago with e6000 and they're still glued together

shoes that have non-slip soles have something done to them called "siping", it is basically cutting lots of little slits into the sole of the shoe.
The slits just need to be 1/16" or so deep with a razor blade, maybe 1/8" apart, you don't have to actually dig out grooves in the rubber.
(the sole also has to be basically flexible; siping works less well on harder materials)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siping_%28rubber%29
The wiki article don't show shit, in this instance Google is better.

you can do it yourself tho it is somewhat tedious unless you build a thing to hold a few blades parallel.
They do it to car tires too, to improve wet traction.

I asked this to /g/ and they sent me here. I am currently making a budget studio setup. What is the best site to buy soundproofing foam panels? Like best price per piece? I assume the Chinese no-brand is just as effective since it's just foam. Or, if this is possible, is there a cheap alternative material at home improvement stores?

acoustic tiles are notoriously expensive, for some dumb fucking reason.

if you can get yourself some rolls of fiberglass heat insulation all you have to do is put it into frames and then put fabric or grillcloth over the outside to make it look nice.

also, some brands have foil on one side, for high frequency absorption you want the foil against the wall, but for low frequency absorption you want the foil on the outisde toward the room. you can alternate or whatever, or use the low Hz version more in the corners, etc.

it's not absolute dirt cheep but it's still like 1/6 the price of the market shit. and way more fun because it's /diy/ and it'll be of your own design

Think foam gym matts would work or too densely packed to absorb?

probably too dense, but not necessarily. it's important to understand that closed cell foam isn't acoustically valuable. you need open cell foam. if the gym mat foam is open-cell, it'll work!

>how to tell
pour water on it, if the water works its way through it's open cell! be careful not to be tricked by holes and seams though

how do I build my own 8 bit cpu using only transistors?

It's easy?
28 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
>>958824
Start with something simple, a 4 instruction cpu that can load a register and add two numbers or something. Forget microcode, use combinational logic based on the instruction for now.
Start at a high level, define your alu, controller, memory etc. Then figure out their operation, create from logic gates then simply swap logic with the fet equivalent

So, my deskspace is boring as fuck. I was thinking about hanging some shelves around it to put action figures/anime statues on. I was looking at Ikea Lacks but the depth on them in around 10" and that would make them stick out pretty fucking far.

-What would be a nice layout for it with it looking cramped as fuck?

-What are some decent floating shelves that don't have a foot long depth?
17 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
You should make some since this is /diy/.
>>
>>958303
I think that lay out is pretty good. I'd say go 2 12" shelves and maybe like a 43" overhead.

I'd also put the computer on the floor
>>
>>958303
I never made floating shelves but I can't imagine it being hard.

pic related. I've got 5.7mm thick veneer and i don't want any edges to be visible when I glue myself a small box.

Is it possible with common tools or am I shooting myself in the foot? My intuition says that I could just file the edges so they fit 45° and 45° but I want to be sure if there's a better way or that if this method will cause me problems.

Define 'common tools'.
In either case, your best bet will be to make a jig and try out your method on a test piece.

Everything else depends on your skills, tools and how much time you're willing to invest.

Is there a way to hang something heavy without making holes in the ceiling?
17 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
Why? Looking to end it all but don't want to lose you're security deposit?
>>
>>957397
It's pretty cheap and easy to fill holes as long as it isn't a popcorn ceiling.
>>
>>957397
No.

Hanging something heavy is going to involve damaging the ceiling. Adhesives that are strong enough to hold a large weight will damage the ceiling. You're going to have to drill some holes.

I suppose you could cut through the floor above and mount some powerful magnets directly above the ceiling if you wanted a cheeky solution.

Hey /diy/
My Girlfriend is in charge of the gas bill, and she neglected to pay it, even though i had more than enough money to cover it when she did not.
They did what they always do and turned the gas off. I repayed them but they will not come out until the 7th of march to turn the gas on.
I dont really want to live in a <50F house all week, so im going to turn it back on. However ive never seen a lock quite like this one. Im trying to open it while keeping the lock intact. I do not have bolt cutters to cut it off. Ive included me 2 years in mspaint diagram of the lock. The large bulbous end is deep, and the circle below is a diagram of the inside that doesn't show depth really well. Its basically one long rod with a conical end inserted into the bulbous end. around the conical end is a flat metal cone cut into 4ths with a ring around the topcovering 3/4ths. I have never seen this type of lock before. youtube has nothing on this particular lock and i cannot seem to see the ball berrings onit, if it even has any. Any advice or suggestions?

Get a replacement price on the lock from them then weight up if you are willing to cut it off.

I know some contractors who are regularly faced with being given the wrong keys. They ring the customer and quote them a price per hour to sit and wait for them or given them the option of cutting it off. You can guess what normally happens.
>>
>>955438
Pay the bill. If you bypass the lock you are committing theft. They may decide to not restore your service at all then. They may decide to call the police and press charges. Is it worth having a criminal record over? Just pay the bill.

This is the wall directly over the jpist with two registers cut into it. Note the floorboards pulling away, and the door I had to hack up to get to close. Assumed the floor was warped because the heater and furnace were down there. Next time I won't use the inspector the realtor suggests.

Oh wow. Gonna have to cut that hvac shit off and sister some new joists to each side.
>>
>>954864
Really stupid thing is, other side of that vent is just an open area under a stairway. No one would have cared if the duct was five inches back. Which is what I'm planning on doing.

Do you really think I need to sister both sides? The joist is obviously not doing what it needs to be doing, but it's not cracked and honestly looks better than most of my joists.

I wanna fix this myself, but I want to do it right. Or as rightly as I can afford.

Whatever lock that key goes to looks like it would be really insecure. Id guess you could open it by setting just the single pin.
Whats the key go to op?

I'm really not at liberty to say. But good to know! Thx

It looks like the head of the screw or bolt broke off one end. Tightening and loosening the screw expands and contracts the rings.

I am fixing some stuff on my old cheap 2005 computer my old friend assembled for me.

The power supply went out and I put a new one in for the first time. I hooked up the hard drive wires and it all worked. Does it really matter which power supply sockets I plug my hard drives into?

I bought the new power supply from best buy mostly to diagnose why my computer was randomly shutting down. My old one was 300w and the new one is 400w.

I was hoping to find a cheaper one on Newegg. Best buys was $40. I don't really know what factors into a less expensive alternative. Any advice?
