Hello /diy/, I recently found an old MacBook Pro 17" from 2009 (I believe) that an old client of mine had destroyed by pouring coffee all over it, he practically blew the motherboard. I gave up trying to fix the mobo and decided to cannibalize the laptop for parts, most of which I have already utilized in other projects or am going too. I'm left with this here Li-ion polymer battery. I recently purchased a Raspberry Pi 2 and thought to myself, "Wouldn't it be cool if I could power my RPI 2 with this massive freaking battery? The life-span would be ridiculous." Problem is I'm not electrician and I don't know if this would cause any damage. Looking at the back of this battery these are the specs:
>7.3V
>95Wh

The Raspberri Pi 2 Model B has a:
>recommended PSU current capacity of 1.8A, >maximum total USB peripheral current draw of 600mA/1.2A(switchable)

The Raspberry Pi is powered by a 5V micro-usb connector. They say that 1.2A(1200mA) power supply will provide ample power to run the Pi, but I may want to get a 2.5A(2500mA) power supply if I utilize everything on the thing. So since the battery is 7.3V and 95Wh, I'm guessing it would fry it the Pi? Is there a way to make this work? Tips and pointing me in the right direction to resources and what not would be much appreciated. Thanks!

While we're at it, post any cool battery projects you've done.

So obviously the voltage is too high correct? So I'd damage the Pi, so I have to put some stuff in the way to lower the voltage down to 5V. Now the 95 watt hours baffles me. I have found formulas that allow you to calculate amp hours from watt hours and watt hours into amps but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right... also MORE amps isn't bad correct? More amperage doesn't damage a device its the volts from my simple understanding.
>>
>>960013
Voltage is a fixed thing. Amperage is variable depending on how much power the device is taking.

Watts = Voltage × Amperage

With the Pi demanding 5V. I'd just buy a third market voltage regulating circuit for the 7.3V. Or, if it's going to be low power, diodes take 0.5V regularly. So you can add 4 diodes to the power and it'll work.

I personally think the charging of the battery is going to be the hardest. Li-ion cells can be a bitch, especially those witb proprietary connectors.

I just started making applejack. Rate my recipe, let me know if I did anything wrong.

2 gallons apple cider, 4 twelve oz cans of 100% apple juice concentrate, 6 pounds of sugar, and Red Star Cote des Blancs yeast. I only used a half packet of yeast, I'll add the other half once fermentation slows down and I taste test.

The cans of concentrate take 3 cans each to reconstitute, so it's 192 oz total of 100% apple juice, or 1.5 gallons.

Did I fuck up?

Shameless bump from OP.

I used a balloon with a few holes poked in it with a needle as an airlock and its already starting to inflate :)

I wanted to use Pasteur Blanc yeast instead of Cote des Blancs because it can ferment to dryness much faster, and withstand higher alcohol content... but my grandma had to tell the dude behind the counter I was making cider so he gave me the recommended cider yeast :/
>>
>>959940
You got proper yeast at a brewing supplier but couldn't spend a dollar or two on a real airlock to protect the time and money invested already?
>>
That isn't applejack. You are making hard cider. At least learn the difference before you force your friends to try it.

My parents are artists, and whenever I enter their workshop, the smell of the paint, varnish, etc. is just unbearable.
I started putting on a respirator whenever I enter their workshop, since I know that these vapors may be bad for your health.

Am I being paranoid? Or am I right about putting on the mask? My parents started teasing me about doing this, but I feel that there's nothing silly about not wanting to breathe potentially harmful vapors.

>>
You know in coal mines they tease the people that wear respirators

It's one of those things where they know it's bad but misery loves company
>>
>>957974
Most of the varnishes release nasty vapors, that's why many of them have "use in a ventilated area" in their labels. Although they aren't too harmful they could cause problems on the long run, so yea, make them install a ventilation system in their workshop if they don't have windows, sure it wasn't part of their plan, but youre the big guy there.
>>
>>957974
I'm also sensitive about the smell of solvents. I'm worse than you, though. Whenever my GF puts on nail polish I need to be in a different room with a closed door between us. It just makes me immensely uncomfortable.

If they're doing spray painting, or otherwise distribute solvents so you can assume there is some in the air, you can wear a respirator without feeling like a pussy.

They probably tease you because they're used to the smell. It's hard to evaluate what the level of potential harm can be, since there's a long way between an open can of turpentine and using a rag dipped in white spirit as a face mask.

I just replaced almost the whole ignition in this car. it still wont run.
checked dizzy, fine.
replaced dizzy cap and button, corroded as fuck.
replaced ignition module.
replaced spark plugs.
replaced coil.
sparks fine.
took out fuel pump relay and shorted pins, fuel pump is golden. hear fuel running when turning the key to ignition.
removed air filter.
crank for 30 seconds, wont run.

this car started two days ago then died. then ran again after cooling down for two hours. then the next day to drive it from the curb to the driveway, RACQ(AAA) man said it was the ignition module.

I dont understand why a car that has fuel, air and spark wont run.

already asked /o/
>lol fag u broke it

I have
>checked the fuel pump
>replaced distributor cap, button
>replaced ignition module
>replaced spark plugs
old ones were cooked. like they'd been running lean or experiencing detonation bubbled orange ceramic, ceramic insulator cracked on some. all had a black ring around the terminal insulator. not like smoke.
>replaced coil
it's not the BCM that fails in these cars because it still cranks and fires.
>the only error code is 33 which is left wheel speed sensor
>replaced corroded fusible links, some had 2 ohm resistance
>checked all fuses
>connected spark leads individually and cranked to check they would produce spark to an old spark plug.
>checked coil resistance
there is no sign of fuel burning like how an engine will chug a little
>tried dumping 100ml of fuel into the manifold and cranking, same, no sign of combustion

it still partly ran before replacing the ignition module. now wont start despite sparking.
tried disconnecting before the fuel filter then at fuel rail, same constant flow of fuel.

tomorrow I will be checking the injectors although their coil resistance is all even at 16.5 ohms. will also be tracing every fucking wire in the fuel and ignition sections of the harness.

help me out please.

Timing?

How sure are you the plug leads are in the right order on each end? Does it have cylinder numbers marked on the diz cap?

http://www.fordmods.com/ford-4l-and-6-cylinder-f1/anyone-know-firing-order-for-inline-6-cylinder-xh-ute-t12751.html
>>
>>957941
yah, straight six. cylinder 1 is at the front of the engine. dizzy cap is marked with corresponding cylinder numbers.

thing is, it was doing this before I removed the distributor. the instructions for installation are to run diagnostic mode and rotate the distributor until it fires. I dont have a timing light atm. but will rig one up for final tune. I alligned the distributor shaft when reinstalling it using lines I marked on the engine and distributor before removing it. so it should be more or less 10oBTC +-2 but i have tried advancing and retarding slightly while cranking.

Do you have compression?

So I've got a little project I'm working on involving a Raspberry Pi 2, Raspbian Jessie, and Tinyboard (Futuba clone made by some faggot). I'm stuck on the part where you make the Pi function as an access point. Every guide I read on how to make it operate this way goes through a step where you assign the Pi a static IP address and they mention making changes to /etc/network/interfaces which is the old way of assigning static IP addresses. Debian Jessie now requires you to assign the static IP in /etc/dhcpcd.conf and I'm not particularly linux-savvy right now, so does anyone have a guide for setting up a raspberry pi as an access point following the second method I listed here or could you walk me through it at least?

That seems retarded.

What if the interface isn't marked "dhcp"?

What if dhcpcd isn't installed/running?

Further, where did you read that? That's not what it says on wiki.debian.org/NetworkConfiguration .

So I recently acquired 35 acres of land in southern Colorado butted up against national park land, amidst wilderness.
End game I would like to have all my land enclosed, trying to decide on fencing. I don't know too much about fencing. Deer and elk are prevalent there as well as black bears. I tried looking up methods to keep bears away online, but I guess these tips were all for people who's answer to these problems aren't just putting up a big fucking fence. I'll have a garden, fish, honey, and all sorts of shit bears want in there because bears know what's up and we like the same shit.
Fencing advice and general bear tips are greatly appreciated.

I have a heated garage that I keep at 50 for my vehicles and dogs, but between that and heating my house, I'm disgusted with the electric bill. I've been interested in making a solar heater to heat the garage in the winter, has anyone on /diy/ made one before? How much heat do they put out? That's true, but am I right in thinking that the pipeline would have be 4-5 feet underground? I have ample yard space, but that much digging would be quite the project... Quite a bit more invasive than something top-soil but I would love to someday have one of these setups.

Invest a little bit more in buying actual pipes, dont waste your time to save few cents to make it out of cans, been there done that, thats my only advice.

Anybody here from the following states I'm about to mention? I would like to buy at least 20 acres within a National Forest that I can build a tiny house or cabin on and be left alone other than traveling to a close by town/city to buy food, get my mail from a post office, etc.

>Tennessee Pros & Cons
+ Close to family. They could easily drive down for a weekend trip any time they wanted.
+ No state income tax and rated the cheapest state to live in.
- Not a lot to hunt besides deer.
- Horrible people. I've driven through the state a few times on trips to Texas and they are shitty drivers with rude attitudes.

>Texas Pros & Cons
+ I've lived there and love the state. Beautiful women and nice people, despite the shitty drivers.
+ No state income tax.
+ Lots of outdoorsmans in the state. Won't be hard to make friends.
+ Football is my life, an football is a religion in Texas.
+ Ton of job oppurtunity in the city if I ever did need to get a job to supplement my income.
+ Also tons to do in the city for when my family comes.
+ It's far but not too far from my family. Could afford to have them come down in the Summer and visit them for Christmas.
- No mountains and hardly any National Forest. Would have to make friends with large private property if I wanted to hunt elsewhere.
- I've read stories and reports of illegal Mexicans living in tarp shelters on people's large land, but it's mostly a South Texas problem.

>Washington State Pros & Cons
+ No state income tax.
+ Beautiful mountains and tons of National Forest to find land in.
+ Plenty of wildlife ranging from deer to moose to cougars.
+ Marijuana is legal, even though I'm not really a stoner.
- Far from family. Doubt I could ever afford to get them here to visit me. Could probably barely afford to travel home for Christmas.
- The Seattle Seahawks bandwagon
- The Starbucks and being a hipster fandom
- Probably the most expensive state to live in of my choices, despite no income tax.

5 cecond read:
Is there a way to make these core2duo's useful again?

Story of my life:
To overcome my being a burden on society I part-time as anykey-engineer in a particular educational institution in a land where east coast is actually closer to Japan.
Being state-operated this organization is bureaucratic as fuck. And the clerks aren't willing to go through the trouble of tracking parts of "those weird beeping techy things" separately, let alone bothering with executing purchases of an odd spare components for this and that. This results in eventual offing of semi-decent or partly-functional pieces of equipment if I can't salvage spares for them from their already discarded brethren.

Now to this day this has led to a situation when there's about a dozen of well-aged computers awaiting their last journey. Yet not everything in them is beyond being functional, these cuties from the picture for example. They're still better than the voyager for fucks sake! Now, I can't fix all of those and serve them back to users. Certain amount of mobo's, pu's and disks is done for good there, and going though all those combinations would take ridiculous amount of time, not to mention users want it nice and fast with all manners of microsoft shit which doesn't get better over time and strict bury-it-whole policy of the accountants. I also can't just take them to a new home where they can beep happily ever after, it is forbidden to move computer cases out of the building unless thirty pages of recycling documents were filled and signed by the director of the establishment. I also have no space enough to store that much of full-scale systems.

So here we're getting to the point:
What is the highest density those cpu's can be employed?
Are there any circuits where they can be mounted in batch? (I know there are server ones but for specialized models)
What are possibilities in vein of making together a tiny bare-bones individual motherboards for them?

All in ll I've got for this:
Approximately a dozen of cpu's, majority is Core2Duo 6x series with lga 755 socket.
About 10 gb of ram in 256 mb ddr2 sticks.
Five or six workable motherboards.
A bunch of power units for 500W, those are on a limit though, as they can still be plugged in users' computers.
A solder iron and ain't afraid to use it.
100 maybe 200 bucks to spend on toys.

>C2D 6x
Depends on frequency. Top of the shelf C2D overclocked to 3.5GHz would be great for web browsing and document editing. Should be able to decode 1080p Blu-ray rips as well.
Manufacturing your own mobo is impossible. So you should buy a nice used M-ITX board and build yourself a nice media PC.
