Why does money feel so weird sometimes?

I remember times id lose $1000's simply because I couldn't be bothered to do shit and i didnt give a fuck or think twice about it. but sometimes ill lose a few hundred dollers playing Poker or miss out on a sale or something and get rather ticked off

Why does this happen?

Why are our brains so inclined to sweat the relatively small stuff but ignore the stuff that truly matters?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I've read that it's a matter of our brains not understanding large numbers.

No matter how hard you try, you could never properly understand just how big one million dollars is, especially when compared to, say, twenty million.

Because the brain can't comprehend those large numbers, sometimes small losses hurt more than big ones, simply because you CAN vision what $400 is, so when you lose it you know exactly what value you no longer have.
>>
There's also an enormous emotional component to money in general so people are included to become irrational about it

I have $12,000 CAD. It's sitting in a QTrade thing and made me $700 more over the last year or so.

Almost all personal finance I read about talks a lot about long term compoundment as a means to wealth. But I don't see the appeal of being rich by 60. What methods of profit, short term, that you can then automate excess earnings into investments do you guys use?

Do something for me, OP. Please write that sentence down on paper, seal it in an envelope, open and read it on your 60th birthday and see if you still feel the same way.

I'll be here bumping this thread in anticipation of your reply.

I have a Roth IRA. I invest in index funds. I have a savings account. I just don't think it's as incredible as people make it out to be. Why the fuck would I want to be wealthy when I have terrible shits every day and can barely fuck and smell horrible and sleep early? I'd rather be rich by like 38~40's

I'm a live in nanny who just worked from 9 am to 1 pm and the dad paid me 30 dollars. I get paid 10 dollars an hour.

He's a financial advisor. This is the second time this has happened, and I just said thank you because I didn't want to be rude and honestly there have been times when my job was ridiculously easy and I probably shouldn't even have been paid so it's not a big deal. But then there are also things they ask me to do like walking the dog that I don't even count towards my hours, so IDK.

Anyway, what do you think the chances are that he doesn't realize what he's doing? Pretty much zero, right?

9-1, that's four hours...

If he does this next time I have to say something but I don't know how to be polite about it.

Live in nanny but get paid by the hour? I think this arrangement would be better off being paid by the day/week/month. Or having an agreement that you will work from x hour to x hour every day. Otherwise keep a detailed log of everything you do hour by hour.
>>
You literally just say you are owed another hours pay.

>Anyway, what do you think the chances are that he doesn't realize what he's doing? Pretty much zero, right?

No, this is your way of thinking because the $10 ad extra hour mean more to you (who worked for it) than him.
>>
>>1592899
Yeah, I work for 30 hours to cover rent then the rest I keep. I'm also a full time college student so I like the flexibility not having a real set schedule can give me, but it does have drawbacks if they have me care for the kids when I have a ton of homework.

I am not very informed on all of this stuff but I've been reading a book on derivatives and hedging. It claims that it is without risk if you:

Long spot and short forward contract

It can't really be this easy can it?

Say 1000 shares of XYZ for $150/share.
Short contract for $160/share, and long spot at $150.

What goes wrong?

That's called a straddle.

Nick Lesson thought they were a low risk way for him to recover losses he had made through unauthorized trading at work. Low risk, low reward, so you need to move a lot of money through it. Then one day the risk caught up with him.

He ended up bankrupting Barings Bank.
>>
>>1592830
