Has /biz/ ever read through this story?

http://forum.thecontrarianinvestor.com/index.php?threads/gt-advanced-technologies-inc-gtat.69/

Basically a group of people who bet big on GTAT, the company that signed an exclusivity agreement with Apple to be a supplier of sapphire for what was believed to be the iPhone 6 and iWatch

Long story short, the company was a piece of shit, couldn't get production right, and Apple only ended up using sapphire on the iWatch, and not the phone. About a month after the September 9th reveal of the new phone & watch, the company halted trading and announced they had filed for bankruptcy.

Around page 500 is where people realize they've lost their life savings.

Thumbing through it now, thanks. Sad shit, but why would people go all in with a company like this?

A different story about investors being idiots, this time involving the Rangers football club, mining interests in Africa and Greenland, and a cycling magazine in Cornwall.

The initial performance of the stock coupled with the hivemind mentality of the forum likely made people feel invincible and reject any criticism of the business model and future prospects

Stark reminder of what can go wrong when you go all in

Is quantitative analysis a meme?

Quantitative analysis focuses on constructing trading algorithms, and then just letting it loose on the market.

This means a blanket strategy for the entire market, but, you get to analyze the entire market at once vs. in fundamental analysis where you are analyzing one stock at a time.

Thoughts?

>Quantitative analysis focuses on constructing trading algorithms, and then just letting it loose on the market.

No it doesn't. Quantitative analysis is statistical modeling you dumbass. Also, fundamental analysis means to analyze the fundament properties of a firm, it doesn't mean "looking at one stock at a time."

Serious question, how fucking old are you?

I believe Google doesn't want affilates to compete with the owner of the website. But it's actually quite viable.

That really was a nice post, anon. Unfortunately, I can’t be bothered to dignify it. Why, you may ask? Well, I must inform you that in the span of glancing at your post, I have ejaculated about five times to a rather enthralling hentai called ‘Emergence’. The way the hentai depicts the gradual process of a virgin becoming a cum dumpster really made me erect. Hell, I haven’t gotten that aroused since Anton Yelchin’s death. Anyways, this girl gets raped by her drunk father and has sex with all the boys at school. Now, these parts were perfectly fappable, but the real fun starts when she gets bullied and ostracised from her class. Her downward spiral of drugs and prostitution eventually leads to her becoming a mere shadow of a human being. In her last dying moments as a pregnant prostitute, she dreams of a future with her (would be) daughter. Instead of getting to live that future, she dies alone in a cold room. I swear that last scene will always bring me to ecstasy. Now, if you really want to get my attention, you must commit yourself to reading such refined works as I do. Only then can I consider you my intellectual equal.

Stick him in the guts with an awl about 5 times sparingly that I carry in my pocket at all times specifically for cases like this.

Honour above all, even freedom.

I'm not talking about false advertising.

I'm talking about extreme, EXTREME emotional gathering...

Did I just figure out the secret to advertising while I was meditating earlier?

I'm just ranting, because I'm about to launch my business and I'm thinking of supercharging my ads with some 'too good to be true' bullshit, but not false advertising of course.

Anyone here ever experiment with "regular" ads and "too good to be true" ads?

An easy example: Look at the ads on 4chan. Obviously the bait is working since people click. The only difference is, mine wouldn't be bait and click schemes, or bait and buy, it's a legitimate business, just with super emotionally charged, or dream come true ads

Just ranting

there's the entire science of sales psychology behind the correct answer to your question. A good primer to read would be Cashvertising.

The better answer is that you have to learn to split test your ads and let data tell you which is better, because different audiences respond differently to ads.
>>
>>1777797

"Cashvertising"

I haven't read it in a while but I think it said there are a few different insecurities you need to target.

Ivy League matters in in finance or silicon valley startup scheme (where 80% of the money flows from retired boomers who decided to play angels). Making a successful profitable business, what people on this board should be aiming for, has nothing to do with Ivy leagues

I'll hire anyone intelligent, driven and capable. Most of what I do now had nothing to do with my degree (I'm in Healthcare IT and have a mech eng). Just sold a startup working with a coder from devry.

What the fuck actually sets the price of a stock?

I know that it's to do with demand and supply, increased demand and a restriction of supply leads to a higher price but WHO THE FUCK IS SETTING THE PRICE?

I don't understand who sets the price. At least with a product from the supermarket I know who sets the price, it's the owner of the good but the owner of companies can't set the prices can they?

I know that when a company provides its IPO that it sets the price based on the market mood but afterwards WHO SETS THE PRICE?

Is the price set by the latest buyer? Someone explain please.

>WHO THE FUCK IS SETTING THE PRICE?
short answer: the market.
long answer: the fucking market!

people bid for stuff and the average the offers and transactions go in a timeframe becomes the spot price.
>>
>>1777657
So whatever stock was for sale, and whatever price it was purchased for last, is the price you see quoted. Generally it's some large batch of stocks a large investor is selling though an algo. So it offers a few hundred/ thousand shares at any given time, whatever price a purchaser bought them for is the quoted price.

I know I said that twice, but that's all there is to it.
>>
>>1777657
>Is the price set by the latest buyer?
yes. The price is exactly what someone is willing to pay for it. The price that is shown for a particular stock is the price of the last trade that was made for a share of that stock.

Why can't the federal government just invest more money into impoverished areas like Flint or Detroit instead of relying on the municipal government? Surely it pays to inject capital investments into areas that are extremely impoverished and would increase the savings rates and, therefore, marginal efficiencies of the capital?

I think the debate comes down to how can a 21st century superpower maintain a productive, not solely a service-based economy in this day and age? Because this is the reason these areas are so impoverished in the first place: the productive jobs moved elsewhere and we are left with the service based jobs in sheltered plutocratic segmented bubbles like finance and technology which support the leisure class.

>Surely it pays to inject capital investments into areas that are extremely impoverished and would increase the savings rates and, therefore, marginal efficiencies of the capital?

Yes, but with the caveat that it must be productive investment. Keeping people employed is productive in and of itself, but you have to weigh the value of propping up Detroit against the value of telling the niggers to buy a bus ticket to a less burned-out place and investing there.

The student loan bubble is going to pop. This isn't sustainable. There are now plenty of alternatives for a BA/BS (coding bootcamps, occupational training, certificates) that will fast-track individuals into the career they want without putting them $200k in the hole. Law school enrollment (and the quality of students attend them) has already plummeted and it's looking like the for-profit schools will shutter within about 3 years (Charlotte School of Law already lost their federal loans and will likely shutdown in May).

What's the best way to short the student loan bubble?

there is no direct way, but short tech companies like Google or Facebook. they are the ones who are promoting the coding meme

I'm 24 going on 25 in May and I've been in the work force for 3 years now. I realize that I am unfulfilled working under someone and need to start a business of my own. I run a tiny apparel brand with a decent following for my niche and I'm beginning the process of patenting a food/beverage product that I want to launch this Summer.

The main reason I am considering going to an MBA program is to build that network of potential people to work with and build a business with. I graduated with an engineering degree but my GPA wasn't great, 3.01 overall. I haven't taken the GMAT yet. I would only go if I could get into a relatively top tier program and the one I have my sights on is Georgetown University since I live in DC.

Should I still consider trying to apply?

Go work for someone who will pay for your MBA, then quit. You're only 25, you're an engineer, and you probably know jack shit about running a business.
>>
>>1777397

yes but youll need gmat > 750

as a 29yo MBA student i really envy the ones that are doing it young.

doing it for entrepreneurial reasons is tricky though.
>>
>>1777421
I work in consulting now. Worked at an automotive manufacturer before. Running a biz does not require a degree.

>>1777439
Why would it be tricky to do it for entrepreneurial reasons ? Is that not considered worthy enough of a reason when applying? I asked a my former boss who went to Georgetown and he told me the same thing that my GMAT will have to be pretty high. You think I should go take the GMAT and then decide from there ?

Try some books written by Peter Lynch. Furthermore you should look up every term you don't understand.

Besides reading books, just browsing around investopedia or the bogleheads forum really increases your understanding of investing in a whole.
