He kind of did have a Roman push. Only thing is he played face and heel, and he can wrestle his ass off. Yet he's beloved by pretty much everyone that watches NJPW.
So, I don't know? Maybe he got over because the feud was so long and so good, and the matches were so very very great?

This man fucking poured his heart and soul into putting taker through one final match. Takers body is litereally broken and he cannot fucking move yet he got him through it and made it respectable. You could tell he was clearly upset at the gravity of the whole thing.
