He kind of did have a Roman push. Only thing is he played face and heel, and he can wrestle his ass off. Yet he's beloved by pretty much everyone that watches NJPW.
So, I don't know? Maybe he got over because the feud was so long and so good, and the matches were so very very great?

Not here he couldn't, not from the ground up. The nips value match quality over anything, and Okada's a decent talker but not great. I think it was the way the Tanahashi feud was structured, and the fact that all their matches were fantastic. Vince wouldn't have the patience, casual western fans probably wouldn't care so much, and Smarks, while loving his matches, wouldn't like him burying everyone else 24/7.
