Is there such a thing? I'd like a pet, a dog or cat might be impossible at this point because I don't live on my own and the other people in the house don't approve.
A bird would be nice though, and I don't think it'd cause any problems with my family. I am willing to build a decent sized bird house for it and take care of it every day, but i'd prefer it if it could live outside in the garden (I live in england and temperatures rarely drop below -2/-3C in the winter, sometimes go over 25C in the summer).
Does anyone have any recommendations? I have never owned a pet so that's why I'm asking here
>>2143953
I mean I don't know how humane it'd be to trap a bird in a bird house outside for the rest of its life but you could build a bird house that's not locked and fill it with food and a bird might inhabit it and start a family in there. Sprinkle some seeds on your yard and then leading to your bird house with a lot of seeds in your bird house as well. Make sure the house is set up in a place that's away from areas where predators might be able to get them
Also having other plants in your yard like bushes trees and flowers can also attract birds
Having a source of running water will also be very beneficial. I'm sure you could find a reasonably priced bird bath
>>2143958
Oh yeah I don't want to trap it. I'd let it out and hopefully there's ways of training it to return to the house each day
There's some birds living in trees near my house, I could try attract them into nesting in my birdhouse I guess

Fuck that birdseed!
I eat Pasta today.
My Betta fish is sick. He just sinks to the bottom of the bowl and doesn't move. He's not eating. Had him for about a year now. What do?
>>2143921
Give away the bowl and get a real tank with plants and filtration. Have you tried giving him frozen bloodworms?
>>2143923
I've been telling myself I'd get him a proper tank for half a year now. I feel guilty about it. Where do I get frozen bloodworms from? I guess that's a dumb question. I've only ever given him those tiny pellets every day.
>>2143924
Its ok, no need for guilt tripping. We all make mistakes. Some countries like the US still 'advertise' keeping fish in bowls despite it not being optimal for most species, so people are made to believe that it's acceptable.
Frozen bloodworms can be gotten at any petstore/lfs/petco etc.
My guess, as with many fish that are kept in bowls is that he might have gotten a nitrate/ammonia poisoning.
How were your water changes and what was the water volume of the bowl?
If you keep his water clean and feed him some protein rich frozen food like daphnia and bloodworms, he should feel better.
Are there any external signs as in white spots or slimy overcoats on his skin? Do you see him breathing heavily? If yes, he might need medication.
If you happen to buy a real tank, rather buy straight from craigslist, this way, you can save a lot of money on the equipment, plants etc. if that is your concern.
What's your favorite animal that can only be located within a rainforest
why are there females in your image, everyone knows female lumberjacks don't exist.
>>2143829
It makes them hotter
Also that doesn't answer the question
ecnomiohyla rabborum, too bad they're extinct.
Is it really okay to keep snakes in containers like this? I assume professionals wouldn't use them if not but it seems really fucked up
I wish i had something like that but for mealworms instead
all professionals use them.
>>2143820
Is that just because it's cheap? Would a snake be happy living in a storage bin? I've seen some people do it with their pet snakes I was like huh
I have a serious cricket problem in my basement, they aren't even noisy because they are the spider looking ones, so the nuisance is really just because the come out in the summer and shit all over everything and are just generally startling to be around.
I'm considering purchasing some lizards and letting them loose down there to prey on the crickets. Is this a viable solution?
how many lizards should I get?
I would rather have a lizard problem than a cricket problem honestly because I can just wrangle them when I'm done
that's fairly stupid. clean your damn house.
>>2143689
it's a basement, there is nothing to clean. It's just concrete floors with some storage boxes and a washing machine
but I also put a tv down there because Its a cool quiet place to sit and do some exercises
Bitch you go down there to eat Cheetos and jack off
How many birds do you think you could accurately identify? And I mean don't just say "swan", you need to get the exact type of swan.
I'm trying to learn birds and am making a list and I think I could probably ID about 55 in a perfect world, but a lot would honestly depend on if it's an iconic male and not just a drab brown female version like is the case with most ducks.
It's not that easy as saying I know X amount of Y. Knowing different species just comes along as you go along, and it took my entire life to get where I am. And I pretty much don't have a big social life because of it. Just take it step-by-step OP.
>55
that seems awful low
I paged through my sibley and got 50 I'm confident with before reaching the passerines and lost interest. I don't even like birds much, can't ID a single woodpecker or gull or swan without a book.
>you need to get the exact type of swan
Well, fuck you too, faggot, I guess I don't know any fucking birds.
where are all my fellow mosquito control dudes at?
>>2143618
>my fellow mosquito control dudes
Do you mean professional mosquito control people? Or people who try to prevent mosquitoes in their yard? Or something else?
>>2143624
people who work for government control groups, im doing it this summer
>>2143627
oh wow, sorry to intrude on your government control group thread. good luck with doing stuff.
Hey there /an/. I've never been an animal person and never dealt with a pet before. My roommate's family can't keep their cat and my roommate refuses to send him to a shelter or something, so he decided to take him in.
What are some basics or tips for dealing with cats? Things like teaching it rules or something for the place, and interacting with it. Is there any sort of setup or cat-proofing I should do for my place? I know that's really broad but I don't know where to start with a cat. I just want to make sure I'm not fucking the cat's shit up or pissing it off constantly. Cheers.
>teaching a cat anything
You're in for a world of hurt.
Practice meditation because smacking it won't work.
Treats won't work.
Only repeated and consistent corrections will work.
And even then, the cat is going to do what it wants when you're not around.
Buy bitter apple or citrus oil sprays and spray it wherever you don't want the cat. That's about the best you can hope for.
Also, clear off anything fragile that's high up - the cat /will/ get up there and it /will/ knock it down.
Biggest question, is it an outdoor cat?
/an/ loves to shitpost about outdoor cats but it's a big deal in this case. No matter what, you'll have to keep it inside for a month or two. If it's used to being let out you'll be in for a lot of sleepless nights.
If the cat's doing something it shouldn't like clawing furniture, a squirt bottle is usually an easy fix.
The cat will likely spray everywhere for the first few weeks. Cats are territorial and new places are stressful and very often lead to spraying until the new house is "his" (again, this will definitely happen if it's an outdoor cat that is used to marking territory with piss)
Make sure he has easy access to litterboxes. You might want more than one if you have a large house.
>>2143343
I'm not a fan of cats but goddamn that looks comfy.
Hey /an/,
My boyfriend and I want to get a cat. Only problem is, he's allergic. He can't be around them without sneezing horribly. He's willing to get the allergy shots. but are there preventative measures we could take?
I've been looking into:
- Certain Breeds
- Anti-dander pills/sprays for the cat
- hygiene
is there anything else we can do? Any advice would help. We both would really love to have a kitty.
>>2142911
Hi OP. I'm allergic to cats in the same way. My eyes get itchy, I sneeze, and get red hives everywhere. I have a cat anyway. Eventually I sort of got used to her and I don't have reactions nearly as bad or as often. I suggest taking benadryl at first. Also, brushing your cat regularly will help. I wouldn't get a cat with long, thick hair, or one prone to shedding.
>>2142913
OP here. I've always wanted a big, fat, fluffy cat. I guess that's not gonna be in the cards for this. Thanks for your advice!

Fuck off to /lgbt/ or /cgl/ vermin lover
Is it legal to shoot stuff like cats that wander into your garden and kill every bird they see, leaving a mess of feathers to clean up? I live in central Europe btw
But the cat is invading my property, if they're wild what's stopping me from just killing it? How is it different from killing a pest?
>>2142475
Are you allowed to shoot other animals where you live? If so, then probably.
Just let them eat the birds
Do you guys want to know something?
If you inject a spider's leg with non-harmful venom, it will be unaware of it and no doubt die. if you inject it with painful venom, on the other hand, some spiders will be willing to self-amputate. And an amputation like that, unlike on insects, leave a lasting trauma on the spider for the rest of its life. This means that arachnids, unlike insects, can suffer rather than simply experience nociception. (They can also feel sex, but that's not really relevant when I'm trying to prove a point about morales) Wolf spiders carry over two dozen and up to around a thousand children on their back. While this may seem easily explainable as instinct, the mother carrys the egg-sac beneath her abdoman a similar way for the entire duration of the time her spiderlings are growing inside. Did you know that is a wolf spider mother is seperated from her egg-sac, she will starve sooner than give up looking for it? If she loses it off a cliff, a wolf spider mother will literally jump off to try and retrieve it.
Another fun fact. Tarantulas? They have pets. No, I'm not joking. Tarantulas own pets, which they keep in their house. They take frogs, and will bring them back to their hovels to keep as pets. While this is because the frogs will eat insects that can be harmful to the tarantula, humans initially domesticated cats to eat pests that could be harmful to them. And the tarantulas don't just keep the frogs as pets, they pet the frogs. They take their legs, gently stroke the frog's back, and pat the frog on its head, and lightly scratch behind the earholes. Let's just be honest here. Spiders are the most intelligent arthropods on the planet, and are on a path to intelligence that could easily lead to civilization. Several species already have a complex language comprised of dancing that certain researchers have set out to learn.
plus spiders are fuckin adorable.
really makes you think....
Neat
Nice try wolfy.
how is killing these animals even legal?
what do they do with the body afterwards? does it go to the animal clothing industry?
They cut up the meat and use it in wildlife preserves.
They'll use the hide to make stuff I bet too.
Usually, they're just culling older animals so that the herds can grow.
>>2142049
The meat is taken to villages in most cases where it isnt practical for the shooter to take it back to their home country.
What I wanna know is how you got let out of your cage.

Anyone got reports of flourish excel dosing? I recently started to dose easy life easycarbo, which is basically the same product, just with another name and was quite stunned by growth and colouration of some of my plants in the tank.
I dose 2ml on my 54l aquarium daily, in conjunction with bio-co2 injection and am very happy with results.
Only heard that some had a bad experience, when they overdosed it and killed their tank - but I guess that's a slim chance if everything is monitored.
Also heard it kills hair algae after a certain time, but couldnt see that yet, after a week
Question: how do I go about removing this white shit, ive tried the whole vinegar thing but no luck.
What do you guys think of Neutering/Spaying dogs

Good idea
That's a big dog.
>>2141148
bad, very bad idea forced by vetkikes.
Nutless dogs die 3-4 years sooner than average.

can someone help me Identify this Myrmecodia?
Is it M. beccarii?
Saw it randomly at a plant nursery, it wasn't even labled and they apparently didn't know what they were selling
Could somebody help identify a plant from description?
It flowers like a sunflower but smaller and more intense with different colours. It has dark green waxy leaves which are slightly succulent and forms a short shrub. They grow and flower in autumn in a warm temperate climate if that helps.
