First of all, sorry for the awful picture.

I found this guy in my bathroom. He's a bit more than an inch long, all black, black wings (didn't see if he had one pair or two), antennae kind of curved. I'm in Chicago.

My roommate called me in the bathroom and asked me to dispose of a "big black ant", I highly doubt this guy's an ant but he does look sort of wasp like? So I'm sort of worried he's a carpenter ant swarmer or something. What do you think?

Ok guys, after 28 years of wanting a dog and 14 years of wanting that dog to be a border collie, i think i'm finally ready

- 28 years old
- work for myself (home on weekdays, working outdoors at weekends but gf can take care of dog while i do that)
- not making loads of money but i have 2 housemates so i'm living rent free, just paying bills

Should I do it? I know they're ridiculously energetic and intelligent. I can handle that. What are your opinions?

Make sure you always have $1,500 set aside for pupper disaster relief and then do your damnedest to find one you can adopt. If not, then buy from a breeder that asserts health is a priority over breed standards.

Then, finally, are you gucci.
>>
>>2143971
>are you gucci?
Idk what you mean dude

good idea about the 1.5k pupper relief fund. Imma definitely get super good insurance though, so will take the vet's advice about whether a cash reserve is necessary.

Adoption is a good plan, I have been looking at local breeders too though. I'm in the UK.

It's always good to have cash on hand in case there's ever an emergency that absolutely cannot wait for insurance verification. That's where most of the insurance horror stories I've heard come from - a super awesome plan that takes a day to verify and can end up being too late. The cash can always be reimbursed.

okay so my family takes trips to this place called bruny island (part of tasmania) and on one of these trips i found this on the beach

there had been a strong storm the night before, so i assumed it was a cocoon of some sort. I thought it was pretty cool and decided to keep it to see if it could still hatch. I kept it in the palm of my hand as we walked around the beach.
i was fascinated by it and tried to look up what kind of cocoon it could be, but i couldnt find anything to match it. It was smooth, almost like skin, and about 2 inches long, but it didnt seem to have any evidence of being connected to a tree. I couldnt find anything like it online.
And then it started wriggling.

Naturally, i freaked out. It was stone cold when i picked it up, so maybe my hands warmed it? but it was moving in such a way that looked like a worm; slowly twirling.
now the unfortunate thing is that at the time it started moving we were walking along the rock pools, and it made me jump, so i ended throwing it into a rock pool. the tide was coming in, and it was quickly washed away.

does anyone have an idea what this thing couldve been? (this happened at the start of feb last year)

For fucks sake, I am done with public off leash dog areas.

I had my 8 month old puppy on a long line practising sit, stay and come, sit in an area away from everybody else when a couple of guys with 2 pig dogs came down the other end of the beach.

I was keeping an eye on them as they got closer while still focusing on my dog. When they got close I took up my dogs long line so it made a foot long leash and made him sit between my legs. The brindle one came close and air snapped at my dog so I yelled and let my dog go so he could run or fight if he had to. My dog circled in behind me and the brindle crossed me I booted it in the ribs them the white and black one made a beeline for my dog, I intercepted it and flipped it over with a punt to its head. Their owner did nothing through out but just stand there.

I hope his black and white dog is ok but seriously learn some fucking recall!

welp, there was your mistake. why would you take a dog to a public off-leash area, and then not allow it to interact with other dogs? it sounds like the other dogs were just checking you and your dog out and you flipped the fuck out and started beating on them.

I'm just talking out of my ass here, but the drunk guy probably displayed total confidence (because he was tanked) and the lions could sense it. There's a whole hunting tactic that african bushmen use that revolves around this same thing- they wait for lions to make a kill, and then they just boldly stride in towards the pride and for whatever reason, it freaks them the fuck out and the lions retreat long enough for the bushmen to take their cuts of the meat and leave.

Basically he drunkenly freaked out a few lions and then swam off before they worked it out in their heads that they could in fact chew on him like an oversized pizza roll

I'd believe it. When tiny little insects fly straight at me I flinch.

Or if my cat pounces I'll always run away like a bitch.

I saw my bf's cat rolling around outside today and noticed a wound on his chest/belly area. Not uncommon, he's an outdoor cat who was feral most of his life and is pretty confrontational.

However, usually I just find scrapes. This is a hole. It's deep and about the same size as a pencil eraser. The skin around it is inflamed, a bit raw and the hair has seemingly fallen out. My pictures are blurry, he wouldn't cooperate long enough for my camera to focus.

Is this larvae? Or something else? I tried to spread his skin to look in there and didn't see anything. I've seen people squeeze these things to get larvae out but I don't want to hurt him unnecessarily. He's going to a vet Monday but in the meantime I'd like to know what others think it may be.

That looks more like a puncture wound. I wouldn't mess with it. Try to avoid making the animal move around a whole lot before the vet. Avoid any stress on the animal. Vet asap.
>>
>>2143634
Ahh this makes me nervous since there's been a raccoon around lately. I wonder how it could have happened? There's no bleeding or scabbing which is why I assumed larvae.

How hot should my shower be when I wash my dog?

Im in the shower to with him but worried I might have it too hot for comfort for him so I put it as cool as I can handle.

We feel the water on your skin. If it's too hot or cold for you then it probably is for him as well. Whatever temperature works for you will be fine
>>
As >2143548 said. Just be aware that on some dogs (most of all greyhounds) it's better to use water a bit colder than that. In the case of greys it's because of the really low body fat percentage, which doesn't isolate the muscles and blood system causing it to heat faster. They can faint if you give them a hot shower.
>>
>>2143548
a good trick i learned was to stick my elbow in water and it feels a pleasant temperature it's fine.

There's a common trope in games or fantasy stories where creatures or characters associated with moths are poisonous.

What breeds of moth are actually poisonous (through bites, contact, etc)? I'm looking here and there, but I see nothing other than minute details about how certain breeds taste bad to predators as a result of their diet.

I always thought the idea came from the fact that moths leave "dust" all over your hands if you try to hold them.

Hey everyone over the past two days these raw spots have shown up on my chocolate lab's head. I looked it up and apparently he may be rubbing his head on the ground due to ear infection. I want to know what you guys think, it's on both sides of his head and he does a lot of head shaking and itching and rubbing there so I think that's the issue.

I think you need to go to a vet if he's rubbing himself raw.

Think of it this way: if you had an ear infection that you were rubbing your ear until it bled, would you not go to a doctors for further diagnostics?

It's quite clearly not going to clear up on its own.
>>
look in his ears. ear infections are usually very obvious: they'll be all kinds of gunk in his ears and it'll smell bad.

take him to a vet.

Is veterinary schooling/care better in Japan than other countries? When I see videos of pet cockatoos and owls in Japan, they seem to be much more healthy and cared for than pet birds in America. How good is Japan at veterinary medicine?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
They don't know anything we don't.
It's just that they actually value discipline and responsibility moreso than Americans who consider pets a form of live entertainment.
>>
In Japan (and most other 1st world Asian countries) "cute" is valued above almost all else so they strive to make and keep their pets cute. As soon as they aren't cute anymore they are often thrown out
>>
Things in Eastern Asia and here are pretty much similar, veterinarily speaking.

Societies there value animals and recognize a few rights.

But like another anon mentioned, it differs in social views, though.

Because of different social values, there's usually a much higher reverence for other life forms in Japan than in the west, that's true.

What a French would call a "nature reserve", a Japanese would call an "animal sanctuary".

A trespasser in the west would be worried about his own skin and in Japan they'd be worried about desecrating the purity of the sanctuary.

People just have different priorities.

I have a cat that I adopted a year ago, he's a big older cat, age ? Im not sure, anyway I got another cat which is a kitten, and all my older cat has been doing is hissing at the kitten and at everyone else in the house, he now spends more time outside than inside, only time he comes in is to eat.. will this change ? Is there any way i can get him use to the kitten? (Pic is my older cat)

Cats hate other cats.

Time. You can do some things like feed them on opposite sides of a door so he starts to associate the kitten's scent with food. You can also try artificial pheromone products like Feliway too. But at the end of the day, the only thing that will fix this is time.
>>
It's normal if the cat isn't used to being around other cats. They'll usually get along with time, especially if one is kitten. Introducing two unsocialized adult cats is much harder.
