Americans: you wouldn't eat your pet dog, or cat, or parakeet. Why then do you think it's fine to eat a turkey?
40 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
i have a a pet chicken growing up and i have a pet rabbit

i've eaten both

don't really have much drive to eat omnivores except maybe a black bear once in a while if it's prepared properly
>>
Because it's my pet and the turkey isn't. If the turkey was my companion and the dog wasn't I'd be more likely to eat the dog.

Loved pets are not food. Other edible animals even of the same species? Sure why not?

I agree with this sentiment.

I've kept four rabbits as pets over the years. This has not stopped me eating rabbit when I've had the chance.

For about a year now my two cats and my two dogs have fleas and i can't seem to get rid of them. I put flea meds on them and most of them go away for like a week and then they come back.

What can i do to get rid of them for once and for all? How did you get rid of fleas?

My dog gets Bravecto (we have a discount clinic so it's like, $30 for 12 weeks) and we vacuum the carpets daily. I'd recommend getting your yard treated as well.

Have you tried something like trifexus? It's a flea medicine that is administered orally and it has worked wonders for me.

yeah but they hate it. One of my dogs makes himself puke just to get rid of the pill.

Are Birds Dinosaurs?

They are a kind of THEROPOD dinosaur.

All modern birds evolved from a common avian ancestor that had the advantage of being small and being able to cover great distances for food with flight during the K-Pg extinction. Thus it survived while all others dies out, which then lead to them diversifying into today's birds.
Not all birds can fly, but all show traits of at least being defendant from an avian ancestor.

I am looking to get into beekeeping.

I my house backs onto several farmers fields in the UK and have a large enough garden to house several hives.

What advice would you give? Do you make any money from this?

There is a huge shortage of beekeepers in the UK and wouldn't mind getting into this more in a few years.

It's hip to love bees with a fiery passion. As you stare into the eyes of your many bees, you feel something kindle in your soul that you haven't felt in many years. A faint tingling in your heart and groin. Is that the bee stings? Or is it something more?
>>
>>2284455
Pesticides can be a problem but otherwise bees probably would do well for you. Also when installing don't use the pounding method. It's much easier to remove frames and just leave the box in the hive for a week to allow the workers out.

Gf went on vacation and I'm stuck with her doggo. She loves the he'll out of him and is usually the one to take care of him. But she went to go see her parents for 3 weeks. Thought I could handle it since he's pretty chill with me. Once she left he started pacing and crying. Tonight he didn't eat his food.

He just threw up on my face. Send help please.

Or it could be severe seperation anxiety. I would give it a little longer before rushing him to the vet. At a min the vet can give him some calming medicine.

Hey /an/, can anyone help me ID this gorgeous mushroom?
Attached are pics of various angles (standard bic for comparison).

I found about 6-7 of these growing next to the place I'm staying, in a grassy yard area.
It's in South America (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), in a gated community that's half a mile from the sea (dense urban area).
Thanks in advance!

looks like an Amanita. Maybe A. lilloi
>>
>>2284172
True. I don't know much about mushrooms, but what struck me as the main difference between more common Amanitas and this one is that the stem lacks the usual "scales" I've seen in others.
Even the younger mushrooms in the pic (taken where I found them) lacked the scales.
It does look like A. lilloi, except that the stem is "fatter" in comparison google results.

Hey /an/, what's the best way to get a dog to gain weight without basically feeding them fat?

I have a husky/amstaff neutered male that is about a year and a half old. He's very high energy/athletic and has always been on the leaner side. But he's also a very picky eater and doesn't have the strongest appetite, and has been getting kind of skinny. Not super skinny, but enough that his ribs are clearly visible when he's running or laying down and you can easily feel his "hip bones" when petting him. Pic related is the only food he will eat and not get bored of after two weeks, but even giving him almost 2 cups of this plus a whole egg and blob of peanut butter at every meal, he still is underweight.

And before anyone asks YES he's been to the vet. Three different vets gave him a clean bill of health aside from being slightly underweight. I wanted to take him on runs with me but I feel bad making him burn so many more calories if he's already skinny. He's not lethargic at all, still bouncing around the house if he doesn't get his regular amount of run around time in the yard with my other dog and vigorous playtime. And he also hates raw food

Any suggestions?

Try orijen. I have a notoriously picky dog and I was running back to pet smart every other week because my dog refused to eat anything more than a few bits of kibble. He got really skinny and my last ditch effort before feeding him wet only was orijen. He gobbled it up and hasn't stopped since. It's kinda top teir dog food.
>>
Why don't you want to feed your dog fat? Dogs need fat.
>>
>>2284054
hmmm okay, I'll order a bad of this and see if it helps

>>2284065
Well I can't imagine it's healthy for his circulatory system to be fed globs of fat. And beyond that I don't know what would be safe to feed him

Vet student here, here's my take. The tooth in question looks like its starting to get some gingivitis, however isn't the worst I've ever seen. You have a few options really, as the tooth does not looked chipped and as long as it is not causing your dog any pain you could potentially go down the therapeutic methods of trying to get rid of the plaque from his teeth, but I've not actually seen the teeth in person so it would really help to get a vet to have a look at it first.

Do you have a set of vaccinations or anything like that coming up? If you do, make sure you ask your vet about his teeth and ask if it looks like it needs extraction/ professional scale and polish. If it doesn't need extraction, there are a number of ways to improve a dogs teeth and hallitosis:

1. Clean your dogs teeth (make sure you use a dogs toothpaste however).
2. Plaque-off (or whatever equivalent brand you can get of it): I swear this stuff is magic. Some vets will swear by it, some won't- I'm in the former branch, I used it for my rough collie that had appalling teeth after a seizure on a kitchen floor chipped the vast majority of them, and it kept her plaque under control beautifully. It's basically a seaweed additive, no one seems to know how it works but it does.
3. Dental 'treats'- I've personally never seen these work and think they're a waste of time, but the research behind them suggests they help somewhat.

I would be tempted, if you have a set of vaccinations coming up, to try and brush + use something like plaque off and see how it goes for a month. Then if it really doesn't work, discuss further options with your vet. There are dental diets and all sorts of stuff out there, but it can be a bit of a minefield as to what works and what doesn't!
>>
>>2283918

However, upon saying all of that, as I said- I've not personally seen the tooth, so really you need to get someone to have a look at it in person. If the vet doesn't want to go down scale and polish I'd suspect she/he will thrust some dog toothbrushes/plaque-off etc at you anyway, and if he does want to do a scale and polish you would do best to try and follow a better dental health program to avoid a future scale and polish in your dogs life.

Gonna hijack this thread a little. This Plaque-off stuff has me pretty intrigued. Anyone else here use it? Get any results?
