Cooking your pets?
When I was younger my family used to keep chickens, when they died my dad would make us eat them to teach us about the cycle of nature. Today my dog ha been diagnosed with cancer and although I loved him very much and eating dogs is taboo I still believe that good meat should never be wasted.
Have any of you ever had any experiences eating yours pets? I'm from Serbia so please don't freak out because you forget animals are animals in america.
>>2287921
sounds reasonable. Here in america I would be okay with eating a pet chicken or goose, however being in america i would never eat a dog, people would literally kill me if they found out
>>2287921
Don't treat with chemotherapy
>>2287921
>>2287921
You need to eat him ASAP before the cancer ruins the meat, also I don't think it'd be wise to eat him if he has chemotherapy. If you absolutely have to eat him after the chemotherapy, wash him thoroughly and leave him in salt water for about two days, 3 days if he's a larger dog breed.
What time is the right time to let your best friend go?
When it can't even stand up
>>2287910
Sooner rather than later.
>>2287910
at the same time you'd let your Mom go
so when life is agony and nothing else
if there is love and tail wags don't give up early just because your best friend is an inconvenience at times
Which animal would you like to try eat?
I kind of want to try some seal. I imagine the meat would be fat and juicy.
Your mom

I already did. It was awful
>>2287782
Too fishy for my tastes
Being an easy prey was a major factor for the extinction of many animals by human hands in the past, just look at the Dodo.
Now look at this. Look at all the meat this defenseless animal has. How this isn't even endengered?

This, and also capybara bites are dangerous as fuck.
Its been about a week since my last post regarding the queen ant I picked up. Decided to post some pics in case there was continuing interest in her development.
I hope the gaster cleaning is a good sign.
My dog is going to have his hind leg amputated tomorrow. Does anyone have any experience with caring for pets with amputated limbs? Any advice?
Although the limb is no longer there, the nerve endings at the site of the dog's amputated limb continue to send pain signals to the brain that make the brain think the limb is still there. Sometimes, the brain memory of pain is retained and is interpreted as pain, regardless of signals from injured nerves. In addition to pain in the phantom limb, some dogs experience other sensations such as tingling, cramping or heat in the portion of the limb that was removed. Any sensation that the limb could have experienced prior to the amputation may be experienced in the amputated phantom limb.

My cat had a rear leg amputation. Handled it fine. Much easier than a front amputation. However always watch closely whenever he's out in the yard or playing with other dogs. You never know when something will go wrong.
My cat would still try to scratch his ear with his missing leg
>>2287472
How long did it take your cat to adapt to the amputation? Was it a difficult process?
Are there any examples of animals working together in nature to survive? Like, one species lures the prey, another kills it and eats and the luring species feeds on the remains?

It exists. Not sure if it's the exact same, but here you go worst girl poster.

Humans and dogs.
There was a thing like this between a crocodile / aligator that after he ate his prey, some Little birds helped cleaning his teeth by eating the remains of the victim from then.
Anyone here keep insects? I'm going to try and catch a Winter Ant queen come February, but they're pretty hard to find.
Anyone here keep bugs? I know lots of people have feeder insect cultures to feed to their pets. What's your experience been like?
No insects, but I've got arachnids and myriapods.
Tarantulas are great, the lowest maintenance pet you can get. They're not very exciting though. I'm getting discouraged about millipede keeping, some species just don't thrive in captivity (though some breed explosively).
I don't know that much about keeping ants, how do you catch a queen? Is it during the nuptial flight period?
Never caught any Winter Ants myself, but I've heard that they usually swarm around oak trees. Apparently it's like 100+ males to every queen. I'd imagine it wouldn't be too hard to find them so long as you pick the right day and a decent area to search.
Dermestid beetles here. I keep a colony to help me out with taxidermy (it's a hobby of mine and you can make a pretty penny doing it.)
I'm much more a mammal person, but they're pretty cool. One of these days I might get a mantid or beetle or something.
Hi i noticed my pug puppy was missing some fur on his paw she's 4 months old and the vet didn't say anything about it on the last visit in december is it something i should be worrying about or is this a puppy thing ?
She has some on her head too but behavior wise she acts fine she got her shots gets fed royal canin and tries to bully the cat
>>2286893
kill the disgusting thing because it will just suffer throughout life with its crushed up face. pugs are not an ethical breed
Keep an eye on it. If it gets worse or you see scabs, might be mange. Puppies have shit immune systems so it isnt uncommon.
Basically, if it gets worse, vet.

While I do not disagree with this, OP desrves some advice.

Hey /an/, which species of lizard likes being handled the most?
I want a really cuddly pet but I'm allergic to mammals and birds.
>>2285225
>I want a really cuddly pet
Then you don't want a reptile. At most, they'll tolerate your handling because you're warm.
>>2285232
But I can't have any other type of pet.
I don't expect it to come bounding up to me like a dog, but I do want to know which reptiles tolerate handling as you said.
>>2285235
Well, if it's your first reptile, you also need to pick one suitable for beginners.
If you want lizards like you asked, leopard geckos like your OP pic are good, so are African fat tailed geckos, crested geckos and bearded dragons. If you can actually find one, blue-tongue skinks have great personalities.
I just got a Betta fish as a Christmas gift and I have no fucking idea what to do with it. I haven't had any fish since I was a kid, and back then my parents did all of the dirty work for me. All I want is for the little guy to be safe and happy. I have a couple of questions.
1. Do all Aquarium filters use proprietary cartridges, or will any cartridge work? The filter that came with my tank doesn't appear to have a cartridge, for some reason, so I'm going to have to pick one up tomorrow.
2. The tank I have is 7.875" W x 6" D x 7" H. Is this an adequate amount of space for a Betta? Pic related.
>>2284921
tank is too small. get at least a 5 gal. there's cheap complete sets available everywhere
>>2284924
This. Bettas need some space, as well as a heater and filter.
>>2284921
1) There are many kinds of aquarium filters, as yours came as part of a cheap piece of shit kit it's junk anyway. I like aquaclear hang-on-back filters for small tanks, but as bettas prefer low flow, a sponge filter like pic related would be ideal (they're also very easy to clean, just pull em up, dunk them in a bowl of tank water, squeeze around sponge, dump and repeat until it the water's clean; you don't even have to take it apart). Note that this would also require an air pump and some plastic airline to connect to the sponge filter, but these are all cheap.
2) That's about 1.5 gallons. He'll survive but it's quite cramped. Bettas usually get bored/depressed in tiny containers with no stimulus. I had one in my 75g tank (4'L x 1.5'H x 20"T) and he swam up and down every inch of it constantly. I suggest a 5g or 10g. You can generally find dirt cheap used ones everywhere and even new ones aren't much (lot of stores have $1 per gallon bare tank sales).
Other random tips/suggestions:
-I mentioned stimulus. Bettas benefit from having something to boss around and entertain them. In a 5g, a couple of amano shrimp (cheap and commonly found in pet stores) would be fine. In a 10g, you could otherwise fit a small school of peaceful schoolers, like one of the rasboras, smaller cories or kuhli loaches. If you see some other kind of fish you'd like to try, ask on here or research it first. Bettas sometimes pick fights with other anabantids or long-finned fish (like guppies), and nippy fish like tetras and barbs often shred betta fins.
-Don't trust the fuck at the fish store, they're either a dumbass full of misinformation, shilling bullshit products to you or both.
-Go with a shallow (~1/2") bed of substrate unless you want plants. With a needlessly deep substrate you'll have to deal with shit and uneaten food building up beneath it.
-Get a gravel vacuum. It's simple and cheap, a hard plastic tube with a soft plastic line attached to the end. You submerge the...
I wanted a black cat while growing up by my mom wouldn't allow it - not because she's superstitious, but because she said the shed fur would be too easily seen on the furniture. All you anons who have/had a black cat, tell me about the childhood I missed out on.
Hes a cat, and hes black. Sometimes i trip over him in the dark
I have never owned a black cat but i did work in animal shelter for a while. The hair thing is silly. If your cat is anything other than the same colour as your furniture you will see the shed hair easily. So vacuum your goddamn furniture.
Anyway, superstition is a factor with black cats in that you can very easily find several at any animal shelter. They get adopted out less frequently than the other cats because people are dumb like that.

It should be considered animal abuse to expose innocent children to toxoplasmosis.
