What is the ideal dog?
any dog
Huskies.

So your telling me a pitbull is ideal?
Can I reasonably adopt a dog when I work 8-5 and sometimes have post-work commitments?
My roommate is moving out and taking the dog with him, and I feel like things will be a little empty without a pooch... But I also don't want to do more harm than good for my selfish desires.
Can you go 10 hours without shitting or pissing? with nothing to do? There is your answer.
You need to arrange doggy daycare or hire a dog walker if you absolutely want a dog, and a puppy is out of question.
>>2287636
I actually think it could be fine if you adopt an older dog that's mellow and are OK with giving it a workout before and/or after work. But for those days you have to stay late at work or other obligations, you will need a dog walker or put the dog in daycare that day or something. Problem with this is, for dog walkers you need to let them know ahead of time, sometimes they only need a few hours in advance, sometimes they need days or they are already booked. You also have to take the time to have a meeting with the dog walker, so they can get to know your dog and know where the key is and shit. With dog daycare, I won't lie it's a big expense, and you need to show proof that your dog is UTD on rabies and bordetella, and you will need to know at least the morning before work if you will be home really late.
It's doable but it will require a huge change and a lot of commitment
>>2287645
I should also add, most dogs can not hold it for 10 hours straight so you'd need to get a dog walker or come home for lunch to let the dog out. Otherwise the dog will learn it's not only OK to shit and piss in the house, but that it's actually necessary.
Puppy got stung by baby scorpion. Does she require medical attention?
>>2287416
Identify the scorpion. If it has small claws and a big stinger, it's most likely highly venomous. If it has very large claws, it's most likely unpleasant but harmless in the long run
Go to the vet either way though
It's been an hour and she's acting like nothing happened. Not barking nor crying. the scorp was not more bigger than 3 cm, claws and stinger were small also
>>2287421
I think anon refers to the proportion between the claws and stinger.
Anyways , you HAVE to get her to the vet. You never know what could happen.

This photo was proven to be fake a couple months ago. The guy looked up rabbits mating and opened the pic on his laptop, then put his rabbit in front of the laptop to make it look like the rabbit was the one looking up the porn.

You don't say! Well gosh darn that pic certainly had ME fooled! Thanks for revealing the truth, you vigilant anon you.

Get out of here, disinfo agent!
so i just switched my hedgehog from carefresh paper bedding to great choice pine wood shavings because carefresh is expensive as fuck, and now hes freaking out and trying to get out of his cage. he anoited with it and seemed to be fine for the first 3 minutes but now he hates it. does he just need some getting use to it? or is something actually wrong
pic related
How's your hedgehog's breathing now?
There is strong scientific evidence that pine and cedar shavings are harmful to the health of rodents. Both these softwood shavings give off aromatic hydrocarbons (phenols) and acids that are toxic. The phenols, which give the shavings their scent, are the reason that cedar repels fleas and moths and why pine-oil is the major ingredient in Pine-sol brand disinfectant. When animals are exposed to softwood shavings the aromatic hydrocarbons are absorbed through the respiratory tract and enter the blood.
The acids given off by pine and cedar shavings are very damaging to the respiratory tract. These acids can actually destroy cells that line the lungs and trachea. Many owners of pet rats have reported the improvement of respiratory problems when they have switched their pets to a bedding other than pine or cedar shavings.
>>2287288
What about aspen shavings?
>>2287332
Not the guy you replied to but I used aspen for years with my hedgehog. It should be fine as long as you keep it clean and check your hedgehog for mites. My hog loved to dig herself under it all in her little house. I put a lot in and had a decent sized cage so she could bury herself easily.
Definitely get your buddy away from pine and cedar though. Just like the other dude said.
Is it possible to make a mare carry a fertilized human egg to birth?
Or have a dog carry a fertilized cat egg to birth?
Idk if this is bait or not but I'll still go for it. It's impossible in the first place , even if they had sex in the normal way. It's the chromosome number that differs from animal to animal. So , first of all the zygote won't bond with the squamous part of the uterus ( that's happening once a month , ask ur mom if she's not at menopause ).
Conclusion : Won't work because genetics.
>>2287237
Maybe. Here's something to read.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interspecific_pregnancy
>>2287239
Or are you saying that an already formed egg could grow in another animal's tummy. Well , I don't think so , because the environment of a dogs uterus differs and the egg will suffer genetic changes that will harm it and will cause abortion. That's totally my opinion ,if you find something legit , pls post.
My 2 year old dog is suffering from hip dysplasia. He's had it since he was a puppy but I always assumed his issues had to do with growing pains or mental adjustment since he was rescued from a shelter. I now see the signs for what they are and I want to help him live a better life. I cannot afford surgery, likely the alternative treatment options will bleed me dry money wise. I feel like I have taken on a burden that was too big for me and I feel terrible for it. I would like to give him to someone who can afford to take care of his treatment. Does this sound like a viable option? Am I a bad person if I try to just make the best of his life without getting the surgery?
Call all the vets in your area and surrounding areas if needed to see if you can set up a payment plan with them for the surgery
Homeopathy can be used to inexpensively and quickly heal hip dysplasia. The homeopathic veterinarian of this article states that "A single dose of Sulphur 200C" is an effective cure. (200C means a sulphur mixture has been diluted in a ratio of 1:100 two-hundred times)

please don't do stuff like this, I know you think it's cute or funny or whatever but people here ARE dumb and poor enough to try it
>dog of 9 years died of cancer in October
>Mom immediately gets a new pupper
>it just died last night
>mom won't stop crying
I'm so sorry to hear that , anon. Why did the puppy die? =(
>>2287185
Poison of some sorts
Which is weird because he's not an outdoor dog and we don't have rats/rat poison where we live
>>2287187
Food poisoning? Did you/anyone else from the family gave the pup human food?
I mean , I know most food we eat , the dog may eat too , without any harm but the food maybe was contaminated.
Anyways , I'm sorry for your puppy. Stay strong and comfort your mom , she really cared about the dog if she cried. =(
How do you so badly fuck up caring for one of the easiest reptiles to keep?
I'd love to save her but don't want to pay a person like that.
>>2287183
>he can't AFFORD to take care of her
>badly fuck up
Maybe it's not his fault. Maybe he really doesn't have any money to keep it fed and healthy.
>>2287189
It looks about ready to keel over at any second
>>2287189
if you knew anything about leos you'd be able to see from the picture that that's not the case and you'd know that $50 would be a ripoff for that individual even it it was healthy.
Lately my cat of about 5 years has been dragging some of my plush from my room and into the kitchen, meowing like crazy as if something's wrong and won't stop until I go into the room. 2 that have become her favorites are actually the same size and a little bigger than she is. Does she think that's her prey and she's calling for me to come eat it with her? Any ideas? Pic is her.
Is she neutered? When my dog started doing that she had psychological pregnancy.
>>2287111
Cute cat. Sounds like she wants kittens. Don't make more kittens. The sheer number of homeless kittens suffering now is insane.
Hey, an, I plan on keeping an indoor cat soon and instead of buying one I'd like to rescue it off the street.
So, what's the most effective bait to lure cats and kittens from blocks away? I plan on trapping them in a drop trap until I find a really young one to adopt, vet, and tame for a life indoors. The other cats trapped will be given to shelters.
>>2287103
Luring stray cats from surrounding areas toward your home is a terrible idea.
>>2287104
They're gonna be lured to the empty lot across the street--i'm not concerned.
So far I've left tuna out 3 nights in a row and nothing.
>>2287130
Don't listen to this guy. Antifreeze kills cats.
I was thinking of a hypothetical scenario recently. What if someone neuters all the male stray cats in an area, and introduces male cats that are of expensive breeds. How would that turn out?
>>2286994
Just like old times but this time , instead of stray , you'd have pure breeds running around the street.
No big difference. A cat is still a cat.
>>2286995
How many half-breeds would that result in.
I won't mind roaming Siamese cats in a city
>>2286995
The female cats are not replaced btw
For those of you that work at shelters, how long after the holidays does it take for them to flood with Christmas puppies?
Are you ready for it?
>>2286699
We are closed Christmas and still have people trying to surrender their dogs Christmas day. We just hide and turn off the lights because the boss will deduct holiday pay for whoever takes the animal in. Sometimes it's unwanted dogs (rarely cats on Christmas day, assuming it's because unwanted cats are easier to deal with until the next day). We actually get quite a few people who surrender their pets for the holidays Because they are having people over and the dog would just be too much work, but that isn't just Christmas it's Thanksgiving, New years, etc. We also get people surrendering other pets before Christmas to make room for a new pet they are getting for Christmas.
A lot of the Christmas animals you see today won't actually make it to the shelter until they reach maturity at around 6-8 or so months. This lands right around late spring to summer. That is also the busiest time for animal shelters too, which means a much higher chance of euthanasia (especially since they aren't puppies anymore) than any other time of the year.
That being said, animals as gifts can be done right. It just usually isn't
>>2286734
I'm really sad now :(
I have a few Christmas shelter stories if anyone wants to feel like shit
>Come to work first thing Christmas eve morning
>There's a box by the door
>Take it in assuming it's Christmas donations
>Open it up
>It's a litter of frozen dead kittens
This is from the first Christmas eve that the shelter was opened to public ever (the shelter had been around for close to 100 years)
>Christmas eve at work
>Man comes in with an incredibly aggressive Cane Corso
>I'm talking we can't get near the window Because the dog will try to climb up
>It's growling, snarling, snapping, but fine with the man
>Man claims it's his dog but he can no longer care for it
>Explain we can't take in aggressive dogs that are owner surrender
>He pulls out a knife and threatens the desk girls
>We close the window and call the cops
>Meanwhile the guy is trying to harass and scare customers and volunteers by bringing his dog dangerously close to others
>Cops come 5 hours later, long after we were supposed to close
>The man now tells the cops it's not his dog, it was a stray
>It took 3 men to pole the dog into a kennel
>5 days later the man comes back to claim the dog as his
Same day as above
>Part of some school trip, kids come to donate things and then look at the animals
>There's a bunch of middle aged soccer moms
>They feel so bad for the cats that they want to foster
>But they only want to foster for Christmas day and bring them back
>Try to explain how this isn't helpful and is actually doing more harm than good
>"But they should all have a temporary home for Christmas!"
>Try to reason that cats don't understand the concept of Christmas
>Get called a heartless monster
Remember him, /an/?
