So, I was just idly searching through tabletop game meetups in my local area to see if anything caught my interest, and noticed a group running Dragon Quest, an older system that existed as an alternative to early D&D.
To my extreme surprise, the organizer of the group is my dad. There are meetups listed here that go back for years and years, and there's another one scheduled for later this month.
I had no idea. He never let on that he played such games, and never mentioned to anyone that he was doing this, as far as I know.
I've been interested in tabletop RPGs since I was a kid, but never knew my father was, too. Even when I brought home my very first rulebook, a 3rd edition D&D player's handbook, he didn't say a word.
I'm conflicted on this. On the one hand, I feel a little robbed. I could've connected with him on this, since he was always very distant. Why didn't he ever want to play with me or talk to me about about it?
On the other hand, I'm kind of excited. I'm a grown man now, with a wife and a life of my own, and I haven't really seen him in years. This might be my chance to reach out, connect, and actually get close to my father for the first time in my life.
I'm equal parts hurt, puzzled, and hopeful.

What do you think, /tg/? What should I do with this?

Maturity says talk to him about it.

The "Do it for the story and because we demand entertainment" says create a second Meetup account and get yourself recruited to his group, then show up for Game Night and make it a big surprise.
>>

I'm a little worried about just talking to him about it. He's kept it a secret for all these years. Does he even want to talk about it?
I don't know what to think, honestly.

>Does he even want to talk about it?

Find out. You'll regret not talking to him about it more than finding out he doesn't want to RP with you. Probably... Maybe...

Will it suck? It seems like limited is where the current R&D shines, at least compared to construction. A draft focused Un-set should be perfect. I just hope it still feels like a true MtG set, like a more light-hearted Conspiracy set

Ok, so hear me out for a second here. Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis should've been an Un-Commander.
I mean, just LOOK at this thing. It's a GroupHug, Greco-Gay Biracial Power-Couple, and it's default card style is the pre-con foil. You couldn't make this thing more Fabulous without being too on the nose. I mean, on one hand, yeah, they put in lore and shit, but on the other hand... It's just about the gayest stereotype snowflake you could put in there!

I honestly think that they purposefully overdid this commander just so 1) SJWs that buy this precon for how gay it is will play Grouphug and at least be... tolerable in-game, and 2) to really point out how ridiculous the MTG Snowflakeness really is. Combine that with the Jacestice League getting BTFO by Bolas, and I think MTG might, MIGHT, be trying to shift themselves to a more palatable point in the lore... and I think Unstable is it going to be the Turning Point.

I personally, believe, and hope, that they're going to use Unstable to really satirize all of their past lore fuck-ups to some degree, and use it not politically, but strategically to re-orient themselves with their audience... Something akin to South Park when its at its best comedy and commentary.

Also, I think this will be the set that people will look back and say "Hey, that's when Magic became fun again."

I really do feel like this is a big turning point too. Even if all the sets suck, you can tell they are at least trying to have fun.

8th edition is easy af to learn, ive recently come back into Warhammer after 10years and have been playing for about a month, the rules are super simple and its a lot of fun. Get a rulebook and/or watch so,e battle reports on youtube to get a feel for it in action.

will do. i assume the book teaches me how to build an army?

Also are there any races you would suggest i stay away from because of difficulty?

All things considered, start with Orks. They're the Mono-Green decks of 40k, in many senses of the phrase.

I've been looking probably not hard enough for godzilla and kaiju figures unpainted to paint. I know this doesn't pertain to traditional games, but I'm hoping some warhammer fans will point me in the right direction to finding some unpainted models that I could get a hold of. Where do you guys go if you want some out of the ordinary little figures to just paint?

In before "muh dice balance" - Chessex makes some damn handsome dice. The green "Scarab" set is about the classiest set of plastic knick knacks I've ever seen, though pic related didn't turn out great.

The collective mind of humanity has power.
The users of magic know they can take on 'idols' into themselves to grant themselves abilities.
A idol of Zeus or Thor grants one the power of lightning or other abilities depending on what part the idol is concentrated on.
However newer Idols can be made, A idol of the invisible man grants one the power of invisibility.
The idol of Dracula makes one a creature of the night.
Doesn't have to be real to have power.

yes, you can spend a full-round action to useless hag.

so /tg/, tell me about 1 on 1 campaigns. not sessions, but knowing and planning your adventure with only 1 player and 1 dm. stories from either perspective are welcome

>>54328314
Should add a DM PC just to make up for the lacking elements for only having one player, otherwise reward them more often, and give more overpowered rewards so they fare better
>>
>>54328335
this DESU. I GM 1 on 1 games regularly and my player seems to enjoy having access to one or two members of a mercenary group that are all friends.

Even though I am the GM, the adventure plays like its the pair of us. I have them take the lead and use my henchmen characters give information & advice but not leading too strongly. Otherwise, just plan the campaign as normal but be prepared to adjust things on the wing.
>>
>>54328314
1 on 1 can be very fun, but the fewer people you have playing a game, the more important the dynamic between them is. In my experience, most 1 on 1 games quickly fizzle because the dynamic isn't good enough to provide the energy necessary for the game to thrive. But it's a fizzle, not a crash and burn, so it's not a painful experience; it's just disappointing.

Still, if you can find a person you have a good dynamic with, and who is suitably active in the game, then it's a unique experience. Without trying to sound all homoerotic, it's a much more intimate experience, because everything revolves around the PC, and you can focus on them and the things they do in much greater detail than you could in a multiplayer campaign (because you'd never get anywhere if you did that with a bunch of different PCs).

Is it Arkham Horror LCG really good as people says? How hard to learn to play it is compared to games like Magic?? What expansion /tg/ recommends?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>54327228
I've played with a buddy of mine who owns it and it's a lot of fun. It's not that hard to learn but it is VERY easy to overlook rules, and we played a the first scenario 4 or 5 times before we had all the rules right.

The Lord of the Rings LCG for us was waay harder and the core set of cards in AH will take you a lot farther.

I've only played through about half of
"The Dunwich Legacy" and it really plays with the format and especially the Train part and when Mill gets introduced had me really excited about the mechanics. The game has a lot of flavor and is pretty creative. I've never played it by myself but with a friend it is super fun and you should have enough cards to support 2 player with the core set.
>>
>>54327228
Its the kind of game that takes all day to play unless you've gone through it a few times. About 50% of the time me and my friends go to play we decide its not worth it halfway through setting up. Its probably one of the least efficient boardgames Ive ever played. It tries to do about a half-dozen things, and only does one of them well.

If you've got a friend who's played before or a ton of patience you're fine. If you're only bit of nerd cred is MtG you're FUCKED.
>>
>>54328703
You're thinking of the board game not the card game

How you do make things interesting as GM when PCs are travelling long distances on foot, other than occasional bandit/wild animal encounters?
4 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Just make the encounters interesting or out of the norm. Instead of some random monsters attacking, make them meet a weirdo who has interesting insight on the world. Instead of having a wild animal show up, have a giant animal being chased by a gang of circus workers. Make every encounter on the road something that either builds the world a little more, or is at the very least memorable.
>>
>>54327051
I tend to treat each session like an episode of a TV show, in the sense that at the start of every session, I introduce something for the players to focus their attention on, whether it's an NPC who is being running from a monster, a road sign talking about some sort of rest stop, a wandering monster, or even a traveling merchant hoping to get some help in exchange for some trinkets.

Then (assuming they aren't assholes who forgo the plot hooks just because) I develop the rest of the session around them interacting with that scenario and either it gets resolved within that session or it becomes a two-parter.

Then again, I run a custom system and my campaigns tend to be extremely short (2-4 hours on average) so it might not work with every system.
>>
>>54327051
The encounter leads to a five room cave with multiple encounters and treasure. Say the rest of the trip was uneventful and they reached their destination in good health with a full purse.
