If a potato cylinder gained weight in a beaker of NaCl, is it hypetonic and the beaker is hypotonic? I'm writing a lab report and I'm pulling my hair to figere how the hell to write the tonicity based on my results

The solution in the beaker around the potato WAS hypertonic, but now they should be isotonic.
>>
If the potato gained weight, then the concentration of NaCl inside the potato was more than the concentration of the solution. Water rushes into the potato cells to balance the concentrations. So the potato is in a hypotonic solution/environment. It's hypertonic to the soln

Thanks, sometimes in biology I feel like I'm doing math and I'm suppose to bilingual because numbers have different values in different languages. . .

Say you're a Bill Gates tier billionaire, would it be feasible to build a steam-powered car with the only change that your engine would use 100$ bills as fuel?

How much would a 100 mile trip cost?

yes, it would cost a lot. Ballparking it, I'd say a million dollars.

Your inane question, combined with choice of OP pic, leads me to think you don't belong on this board.
Obviously from /pol/, this question belongs in /diy/ or /trash/. And steam powered cars don't exist. The closest thing is wood gas cars.

Probably a high score, since I just took the GRE and the practice involved a lot of babby-tier algebra an gay reading/vocab exercises.

But who cares, those tests are just to weed out idiots. Getting a high score is just something you have to do to impress people, but it generally doesn't really have any relevance to your career.

I don't think my score would change a bit

infact I would probably do worse because I studied before I took it

So about 30 (my last score)

Why cant we have a philosophy board?
A lot of things that don't belong here could go there. Like important truths like this:

>Nobody in this world is good except Jesus. We are all flawed sinners with no hope of being good. Trump said all Mexicans are rapists. This is true. We are all rapists. Nobody is a virgin. Nobody is innocent. Not the elderly nor the infants. This is absolutely true. To be good is to control. Free will dictates that we are Gods. This is a satanic belief. There is one God, ruling from outside of this world. All the perceived forces in this world are derivative. Jesus perfectly transcended those worldly forces and was one with them because he worshiped the source of the forces, not the forces themselves which are derivative. We are not good because we worship the world and its forces instead of the outside source of them.

Expect a lot of politics, a lot of competition and a lot of work for just a second of attention. It's honestly pretty horrible. I better hope you are with a group with someone who has some authority in the collaboration. If not, expect to be completely ignored.

Any doctors/med geeks around?
Asking /sci/ for lack of a /med/, and little luck with doctor Google.

Ever since puberty I've been very occasionally afflicted with urethral burning. While annoying as shit, this could always be alleviated via masturbation. Curiously, when it occured didn't and doesn't seem to be related to how recently I masturbated previously. The internet turns up plenty for pain caused by ejaculation, but nothing for pain relieved by ejaculation. The reason I ask now is I'm recovering from kidney stones, and the problem, or something like it, has come back suddenly ten times worse. The internet has produced a few examples of the same problem but not many answers.

Seems it just goes away eventually, but I'm curious as to whether the two presentations of pain are actually related, how they relate to kidney stones, and whether I should be jacking off to make it stop.

Note: I was on flomax for the stones. Apparently it can cause retrograde ejaculation, which it seems to in me. I've discontinued use, but I'm reluctant to try the jack off solution in excess in case that makes it worse.

>Asking for medical advice on 4chan

I know, but it's easier to come by diversity and personal experiences here.

Low fluid intake can cause kidney stones and effectively increase the concentration of urea and other solutes in your piss, which could be burning your urethra. Ejaculating could just be cleaning out these deposits from your pipe.

What colour is your piss?
>>
>>8720985
since the kidney stones, very light yellow to clear. Been drinking water like a motherfucker, I do NOT want to do that again. OP pic related.

Prior, mid to pale yellow.
>>
>>8720985
This, and also specifically, calcium levels. Most stones are calcium-based and if you are young-ish now, or if you reprted the burning since puberty, the docs should have checked you over for a range of conditions which can cause excess calcium in your urine. If you're of an age where stones aren't unusual plus you never reported the burning, you should go back to the doc and get a calcium level check and if it's high, investigations as to why.

Pretty much any material with desirable qualities is going to find a large number of different applications. How many uses of plastic can you think of? How many uses of copper? Silicon? Wool? Or the Judas of miracle materials, asbestos.

What I'm saying is that a material with any unique properties having a lot of great uses is pretty much typical, not unusual
>>
>>8720322
Why do you call asbestos the Judas of miracle materials?
>>
>>8720502
Isn't it obvious? Asbestos was first thought to be a miraculous material, one of the Apostles of Building like wood and iron. Then like Judas, it betrayed us by giving everyone cancer.

hey /sci/

for our engineering graduation celebrations at my university, each year they pour soap into the main fountain on campus and it spews foam for a whole week.

next year we're thinking of upping it a notch, by colouring the water.

was thinking of potassium permanganate, although not sure what quanitities of PP we would need + if it is a hazard in large quantities or would it do that much harm to the water.

i know it is used as a disinfectant and so on, so i guess it would not be such a problem.

also, maybe you can suggest another chemical which will turn the water green, which would be better.

i think if we were to use food colouring, it would need large quantities to get a strong colour in the fountain.

dont really want to cause any damage to the environment and the likes in the meantime, so we're thinking of avoiding soap this time.

Any concentration of potassium permanganate that you're able to see is going to be hazardous to peoples health. Just use fluorescein.

and if that's too timid and safe, put up a few comical radioactive contamination signs to scare people. Even with out the signs it can be a little frightening.
>>
The janitor at your school must fucking hate the engineering department. Do you realize that putting soap in a fountain clogs the filters and fucks up the pressure in the tubes, possibly causing damage from back-pressure? Engineering students should understand how this is more than just a harmless prank. Probably costs the school a good chunk of change every time somebody does it
