What are the benefits of emotions in science?

IS the best science the one that can best eliminate these primitive communication signals and instead teaches himself (not herself; women make housewives and whores, not leaders or scientists) the superior form of communicating through language?

Note that saying "emotions is what we live for" is incorrect.
"Boredom" is emotion too. So is "longing". So is "curiosity". So is "motivation".
You only need two emotions: "intense pain of not obeying the project plan" and "intense happiness of obeying the project plan"
10 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>happiness by following project plan and pain by not following
>no curiosity or motivation
This is what happens when you give an autist access to the ether.
Tell me, who is going to put forth a project plan if nobody is curious? Who is going to actually be in STEM if they don't feel motivated in some way?
>>
>>8728469
How many processes does a computer have? Who commands the computer? What emotions does a computer have?

Extend that idea to humans. One conscious commander. Thousands of slave humans with only two engineered emotions: happiness for obeying, suffering for misobeying orders.
>>
>>8728452
Anyone who feels they have somehow put aside their emotions and is acting rationally or logically is deluded. Most of what passes for human 'thought' is just re-packaged emotional preferences filtered through pseudo-intellectual self-importance.

Guys
Some good advice from /sci I've received is read through the material beforehand and treat lecture like a revision
So which books should I study it from beforehand?
6 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
obviously depends on the subject and class so you should ask your lecturer for book recommendations, aside from that,
>whatever the prof assigns in the syllabus
>whatever books on the subject you can find that have high ratings on amazon
>>
>books this
>books that
I'd say start reading scientific articles about research problems that interest you, for example from google scholar or arxiv and then, once you know what kind of knowledge you need to understand them, get a book.

>tfw you realize you were accepted to a top 5 university not because of grades or intelligence but to satisfy a diversity quota

I've suspected this for a while now because of my grades at school were average at best and I never won any science awards for best student or best lab project.

What is the right thing for me to do /sci/? My imposter syndrome is not a syndrome because I AM an imposter...

It is pretty dumb.
Just use pictures and then refer to them like "that acid", "the product A", "the product B", "aspirin". We are living in digital age. Then the computer can store that data as a vector image. Using names like 1,3-fhioadfho,2-2-disdiojioj is purely retarded.

Hello everyone, my gf has been diagnosed with bipolarity (on the type 2 spectrum) with major depression and thus has not recovered yet after 6 years with mood stabilizers/anti-depressants. Her psychiatrist has recommended ECT. I know it almost always induce memory loss, but I was wondering just how much it could affect her memory, to what extent (eg: how far can she remember or her personality) and is it possible to regain the memories after the treatment. Also, is it effective in treating this disorder? Thank you.

>>
ECT is fucking retarded. It's just en electrical lobotomy.
>>
>>8727984
Are there any other treatment when the person doesn't really show improvement with anti-depressants?
>>
>>8727980
You're overestimating its detriments.

Unfortunately, popular culture has mase ECT to be like a very painful and numbing procedure. In real life, she'll be put to sleep and shouldn't feel any differently than before.

There are plenty of alternate treatments, including medication that isn't specifically anti-depressants and psychological therpwy, but I'm assuming they've tried that beforehand or else they wouldn't be doing ECT.

Why can't Hiro just put this board out of its misery?
This board is nothing but a /pol/ branch now, so 4chan overall wouldn't even lose traffic if it disappeared.
It's not only race and climate change but now there's even threads for alt-right celebs. There's not a single reason for this board's existence other than being /pol/'s backyard and uni/job bragging.
It's just painful to see after 7 years of browsing this board, this is more shameful than the 0.9999=1 thread spam days.

/his/ deal with even more politically charged content yet at least they can maintain /pol/tards at bay. /a/ hasn't changed much really.
>>8727800
Not that it will change much because the only threads that surpass 100 posts are either SQT's, bragging threads, /pol/ threads, or the sci humor thread which reposts like the same shit always with 1 or 2 new pics each thread.oh yeah or elon musk threads

Hey guys,

I was having an interesting discussion on /pol/ about head trauma and was wondering what you guys thought.

The case was a ~20 yof who was hit in the head with a log and then had a seizure. No obvious blown pupils, and the normal grand mal lack of respiration.

For management, I was thinking a 1mg/kg lido mix with valium for the seizure and to blunt ICP increase in intubation from the gag, perhaps rocuronium (?) then at hospital a Mannitol & 7% solution and a bolt.

What about a labetalol and 7% solution as well for the ICP? Would a paralytic be out of the question? What would your treatments be?

What is approximation? How is it related to linearization? What is the formula for approximation? Could somebody give me a layman's explanation? The teacher gave a very formal explanation and I couldn't keep up, and my textbook doesn't have a formula for it.
7 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>8727707
>What is the formula for approximation?

Well it's normally a Taylor series. [eqn] \sum _{ n = 0 } ^{ \infty } \frac { f^{ (n) } (a) } { n! } ( x - a )^n [/math] where the [math] f ^{n} [/math] are the nth order derivatives evaluated at a.

>How is it related to linearization?
It's the first order term. So if we have something like [math] (1+x)^{1/2} [/math] then we can expand it as a Taylor series [eqn] (1+x)^{1/2} \approx 1 + \frac { x } { 2 } [/eqn] Which is the linear approximation at x=0.

i agreed to join the first professor that contacted me, and he already had a project lined up.

i regret it because the professor can't manage a lab for shit, and he wasted 2 years of my time while i waited for him to get funding. i was going to master out after 2 years but of course he got funding then which trapped me in.

Do Optometrists make good money?

I'm assuming they make on average anywhere between 100,000 to 140,000 which seems to be the case according to governmental statistics and websites detailing salary.

Would that sort of salary be enough to pay off a $250,000 usd debt that's acquired during the duration of schooling?

can you "catch" a mental illness, or is it simply a temporary thing from being around the mentally ill person and subconsciously taking after them as you do with everyone you are around, which then goes away when you stop being around them?

>>
>>8727093
Everyone you interact with influences you, actually seeing some random stranger's face on TV influences you. We don't really understand our minds, much less the semi-nonexistent things that plague it. So yes, you can "catch" it, you can propagate a mental illness just by thinking about something in a certain way. Certainly you can be influenced by said mentally ill person.
