Hey, /sci/, I'm trying to learn Javascript on my own, but doing so is pretty hard without knowing where to start. I've done a little Java and a little Perl, so I'm not totally new to programming. Anyone know some good resources to get started with? Relatedly, when I finally git gud, are there any related certifications worth testing into?

Hi Anon

Read through this entire book: http://eloquentjavascript.net/

Then move onto a framework like Express and learn stuff like Node.js

Then use that to publish a website

Then you got a job

I learned by coming up with random project ideas and trying to create them from scratch (no libraries, jQuery etc)

Some of the things I made with javascript onely (to give you some ideas):
Basic ascii based poker game
Assembly style scripting compiler
2d top down tile based world generation and exploration using img tag
Basic mathematical manipulatioj from strings (e.d differentiating 3x^2 inputted as a string)
Cant remember all of them but nothing teaches you like continuous failing

I'm not here to troll nor to incite any sort of misguided conversation. All I simply ask is that someone show me some real proof about anthropogenic climate change. No, I'm not some conservative Christian who doesn't believe in facts. I have undergrads in psychology and statistics so here's why I'm skeptical:

>when pressed, every pro man-made climatologist has regurgitated the same talking points they were taught
>the consensus numbers are based on faulty meta-analysis that are easily debunked if you deconstruct them as I have
>the models don't match with current data
>it doesn't help that as young as climate science is, it's been unable to keep internal consistency in its message (see global cooling=>global warming=>climate change..)
>nobody seems to take galactic weather and the sun into account, which seems rather faulty in my opinion
>there are many climatologists, some very prestigious ones, who are clearly stating we're unable to determine how big of an impact humans have on the climate

The Pope and Algore said climate change was real. What more proof do you need /pol/tard ?
>>
>there are many climatologists, some very prestigious ones, who are clearly stating we're unable to determine how big of an impact humans have on the climate

I'm not an expert in climate science, but this sounds like a very weak criticism. How certain are they about the sign of the impact? Probably much more certain than they are about the magnitude.

Let's suppose that there's just so much uncertainty in climate models that there's only a 5% probability (in a Bayesian sense) that future climate change will severely endanger human welfare -- which, you will note, is a weaker claim than saying that said climate change is *also anthropogenic*.

If climate change weren't a problem at all, and you could press a red button that had a 1/20 chance of causing worldwide catastrophe and a 19/20 chance of causing slightly slower economic growth on account of unnecessary environmental regulations counterbalanced by the pleasure of living in an unpolluted world, would you press that button?
>>
To be more direct, even if it's untrue that there's a consensus about catastrophic global warming in the future, the tail risk seems high enough (and the short-term downsides of paying attention to climate change seem low enough) that it seems transparently obvious that we should impose sensible environmental regulations and call it a day.

Like, okay, maybe there's only a 5% chance climate change is a problem. Maybe it's 3%, maybe 1%, maybe even lower. Are you willing to bet on it being low enough for us to comfortably ignore?

And exactly what's _bad_ about investing into renewable energy, fining pollution, and just replacing old forms of energy production with newer ones (especially nuclear plants)? I honestly find myself sort of baffled here. At worst it slows down the economy marginally, but we get to enjoy a better power grid and a cleaner world, which... seems like the sort of thing that sustains long-term economic growth anyway.

Lets say, hypothetically, I've managed to create a self-regenerating material, with similar mechanical properties as a polymer although the thermal properties are slightly improved.
What's your first thought when considering a field of application for such material?

That's a great fucking idea. This might also work for tenga eggs, you could warm those up really well if the thermal properties have been improved.

so we all know that diamonds are the hardest medal. but wouldn't a frozen diamond be even harder? does this mean that when you freeze a diamond it becomes another state of matter, like a liquid?

> but wouldn't a frozen diamond be even harder?

it hurts, please make it stop

But just in case you're being genuine, diamonds are already solid thus they have been "frozen". You're suggesting turning a solid into a solid, nothing is gonna change.

also diamonds are not the hardest known substance or material.

>Huber’s team specializes in optical techniques for stimulating and imaging brain activity instead of using invasive techniques that rely on electrodes. They regularly measure the activity of hundreds of neurons with single cell resolution by using a method called two-photon microscopy.

>Mario Prsa, a researcher at UNIGE and the first author of the study explained that they wanted to test whether mice would be able to learn to control a neural prosthesis by relying solely on artificial feedback from a sensory signal. To test this, they imaged neural activity in the motor cortex. When the mouse activated the specific neuron chosen for neuroprosthetic control, stimulation proportional to this activity was applied simultaneously to the sensory cortex by using blue light.

>Neurons of the sensory cortex were indeed rendered photosensitive to this light. This allowed the neurons to be activated by a series of optical flashes, which enabled the team to integrate them with the artificial sensory feedback signal. When the mouse achieved an above threshold activation, it was rewarded and 20 minutes later, once the association had been learned, the rodent was able to generate the correct neuronal activity more frequently.

>This meant that the sensation that had been created artificial was not only perceived, but also that it was integrated as a feedback of the prosthetic movement successfully. The brain machine interface functions bi-directionally in this manner. The Geneva researchers are of the opinion that the reason why this fictitious sensation is so rapidly assimilated, is that it most likely taps into very basic brain functions. Feeling the position of our limbs happens automatically without much thought being required. This probably indicates that fundamental neural circuit mechanisms are being used.

>This type of bidirectional interface might enable the development of robotic arms that are able to displace more precisely in the future. These would be able to feel touched objects, or perceive the required force to grasp them. The neuroscientists at UNIGE are also investigating how to produce sensory feedback that is more efficient. At the moment, they are only capable of doing so for a single movement, but are exploring the possibility to provide multiple feedback channels in parallel. This research lays the groundwork for developing a new generation of bidirectional neural prostheses that will be more precise
>>
>If modern imaging tools were to be used, hundreds of neurons in the surrounding area could be observed as the mouse learned the neuroprosthetic task. Huber notes that it is known that millions of neural connections exist. The study did however reveal that the animal activated only the one neuron chosen for controlling the prosthetic action and none of the neighboring neurons. He finds this interesting as it reveals that the brain can home in on and specifically control the activity of just one single neuron. This knowledge could potentially be exploited to develop not only more stable and precise decoding techniques, but also to gain a better understanding of most basic neural circuit functions. What mechanisms are involved in routing signals to the uniquely activated neuron has yet to be discovered.

If I have sets [math]A\subseteq B[/math], and I want to show they have same cardinality instead of finding bijection between them could I show simpler bijection to some [math]C[/math] where [math]B\subseteq C[/math], then would [math]A=C \wedge A\subseteq B\subseteq C \implies A=B[/math] or would I need to show something more? Is this clunky?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8710985
That is enough.
>>
sounds fine, certainly |A| <= |B| along with |B|<= |C| and |A|=|C| gives |A|=|B| since |A| <= |B| <= |C| =|A| implies it right away
>>
>>8710985
All you need is an injection B->A, your stuff would show it exists.

Example: 2Z and 4Z, 4Z is a subset of 2Z, and 4Z has the same cardinality as Z. Since 2Z is a subset of Z, you have card(4Z)<=card(2Z)<=card(Z)=card(4Z)

Low temperature superconductors:
Electron-Electron pairs known as cooper pairs follow boson rules, which means they can all pile into the conduction band and move at basically the same speed without hitting eachother.

High temperature superconductors:
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ who knows

I'm no physicist, will the cooper pairs not collide with nuclei, slowing them down? Or is there something special about bosons I'm missing

Is the idea of a quantum computer still something that's being considered as a practical possibility?

What is the current status of research and application of this idea?

It's a practical possibility, but it won't solve practical problems in general.
>>
>>8710338
Adding to my own post, I mean it will not improve over a regular computer for general computing, but it can augment a general computer for its ability to solve a class of problems very quickly.

Could you expand on this?
I know how processors work, but I'm not a physicist and my understanding of quantum computing is pretty vague.

Hey /sci/
I want to know if there's a possible way to factorize
(x^2+x+1)
Into
a(U(x) ^2 + 1)
Where "a" is a real number and U(x) is a function?

I'm having a really hard time even that this shit looks like a 5th grade equation.

I'm asking in here in hope to find a good mathematician, I'm a physicist so don't judge

Pic related even mathway couldn't help

You can't factorise it because it is in its simplest form already
>>

evidently

U(x) = (x^2 +x)^{1/2}

Was this man just a meme? Putting aside his timewave theory, UFO sightings and insane theories was he actually on to something on nature's wish for complexity? There's a ring of truth to it that's too tasteful to ignore not to mention how psychedelics and nature have great answers to today's issues

He's at 500 years ahead of time. No wonder no one understands him. Sure some of his theories are wacko. But his main point is that we're all kids. We have no idea what we are or where we are. The fact that we keep pretending that we know anything is ridiculous.

is it ever possible to have a job just researching w/e you want without any deadlines or constraints?

i value knowledge, and i also value my quality of life from a financial and health aspect. with this in mind, i wanted to know what would be the ultimate equilibrium for me. iirc some mathfag once said that some Researcher only came in once a week, wrote a portion of a paper they were working on, and then left to do some skiing. how does one get this gig? what are the requirements and chances?
