So I want to buy a baja bug for a cheap desert beater that I can flat tow behind my ranger or drive around town for fun. I know that they're mechanically super simple to work on, but are parts still plentiful and cheap? Is there anything I should know about air cooled VWs before buying one? Thanks.

Redpill me on gas additives. Snake oil or actually beneficial?
20 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
Ones that go in the gas I don't really believe. Gasoline is a solvent. It has cleaning properties on its own. Tips of injectors is like the size of a ballpoint pen. If they're dirty they're usually not working at all. Another argument additives say is the fuel pump and upper cylinders don't get lubed by the gasoline. This is true but gas motors are designed for it. It's up to you whether to buy into that or not. Lucas fuel treatment and Marvel Mystery oil have lubricating properties. Seafoamh a vacuum line however, does work. It cleans carbon out of the cylinders and valves. You can do this by running an engine really hot though (look up Italian tune up). Seafoam in the motor oil again can clean deposits if it's really dirty but most engines aren't ever dirty enough.
>>
>>16962055
Poly ether amine is the best fuel system cleaner. Most non-shit gasoline already has it, chevron techron for example.
Over the counter additives are like 50%-80% PEA.

Seafoam is best used in the sump for a few miles or through a vacuum line.

Its overpriced and just water through a vacuum line on a hot engine will have the same cleaning effect.
>>
>>16962055
if they vehicle has been maintained well, it might not make any difference.

but on a higher mileage vehicle with questionable maintenance, you will notice a difference. A bottle of seafoam in the tank will disperse any water in the low points. a few ounces in the crankcase will unstick any hydraulic lifters and clean out residue (change your oil and filter after). run it through the vacuum lines and it will clean out soot in the valves and upper cylinder.

That being said, it's pretty much a mix of water, IPA and MEK. It's no miracle cure, but it does what it does.

Can I get some help with a question I have about mufflers?

Okay so I'm pretty inept when it comes to modifying cars and shit. I'm looking to changing the muffler on my car so that it's louder. That's all I want, for the car to be louder. Is a muffler all I would need? Do I need one that is specific to my car, or would a standard one be fine?

Will pic related make my car sound louder?

just remove the muffler or poke holes in the stock muffler, don't spend money on a fartcan
>>
Alright, so here is how exhausts work.

They are comprised of the following components (going from the engine to the rear)

Headers -> some meme piping -> catalytic converter -> some more meme piping -> muffler

The cheapest approach is to just buy a Chinese replacement muffler. It will make your car louder and it's easy as piss to install.

If you're actually looking for a performance increase, you may want to consider replacing the other components as well.
>>
>>16960233
Is that safe?

>>16960246
Thanks. Yeah I'm not really looking for any sort of performance increase as I don't have enough money to spend on an exhaust system. Just looking to make the car louder.

The muffler I linked is $200, which is a pretty decent price but I don't know if it's good, loud, or even works with my car.

What tool brand is good all arounder with cars in mind? Is ryobi decent for a shade tree mechanic? Local home despot having ryobi days sale going on.

For house work yes, for the torque needed for cars, mehhhh. They can save time on screws, thats about it. IF you want good tools, but some used snap on shit from a shop that's closing or CL. Get a small air compressor. Save you HOURS of work.
>>
>>16957089
Ryobi tools are always for sale.

If you want to get a deal for good corded electrical tools browse your craigslist ads. Bosch, DeWalt, Black&Decker Industrial, they are good stuff.

If you want to get cordless tools then look at Makita or Milwaukee. Keep in mind, you are marrying the brand if you buy cordless for those damn batteries.
>>
>>16957113
I don't mind marrying into a brand as long as it can satisfy casual use. With that in mind would it still be advisable to buy into a tier up for the sake it?
