Don't drive into the city during rush hour. Every city is like this. The amount of cars we decide to let into the city is largely dictated by available parking, and how many cars we can handle in the city itself. Letting more people drive in would result in less people taking the T, less people moving into the city, gridlock on all of Boston's tiny little streets, and parking rates shooting up. Traffic is kept bad somewhat on purpose to incentivize taking alternate forms of transportation to avoid this.

He actually sent 3 free ones. So, ever grateful Joe from Calgary.

Hey guise, so, the new Ford Raptor only comes with a twin turbo V6 with 450 horsepower and 510 pounds of torque and gets like 20 miles per gallon...in a giant truck... that's considered a commercial vehicle due to its width...

Sooo like, why don't they put this engine in the Mustang?

Just wondering.

Want to get an early N/A watercooled 911/Boxster but are afraid of the infamous IMS issue? Well I'm gonna try to change your mind

>What is an IMS
The intermediate shaft has been present on Porsche flat 6 engines ever since the original air cooled 911 all the way up to the 9x7.1 generation 911s, Caymans, and Boxsters
It's used to indirectly drive the camshafts and is in charge of engine timing

>What goes wrong?
The IMS itself is perfectly fine, the problem was when Porsche switched to watercooled engines they needed a bearing on the flywheel side of the engine, and with their infinite wisdom they decided to use a sealed bearing with a lifetime grease
What happens over time to a small handful of these bearings is that the grease dries out and it fails, causing the IMS to throw the timing out of sync and grenade the entire engine in seconds
The bearing on the opposite side is lubricated by engine oil and has never been known to fail

>How often to these fail?
Engines from '97-'99 use a robust dual row bearing that has a failure rate of less than 1%, it's the engines made from '00-'04 that use a weak single row bearing that has a failure rate as high as 10%
But don't worry just yet, general consensus is that if the bearing in your car is faulty it would have failed before 40k miles
In addition the best way to keep it healthy is to actually drive your car like a Porsche should be driven; low mileage garage queens are more prone to failure

>How much would this cost me to repair?
If you have a higher mileage car I wouldn't worry too much, especially if your car has a dual row bearing
Fixes include:
>replacing the bearing with a new OEM part - $100
>IMS Guardian - $400
>replacing the bearing with an aftermarket ceramic bearing - $600
>removing the seal and adding a flange that directly feels engine oil to the bearing - $800
The last option is the only true way to fix the problem, but I personally don't feel any of this is necessary

its a moving belt, more moving parts means higher failure chance

it seems only honda and toyota have made adequate ones that can last 130k+ miles where Nissan shits the bed as low as 50k miles.

>>16974182
>>can't handle as much power
it can handle the same power as normal, they're used primarily in econoboxes so it doesn't matter
>make it act like an automatic
so it stays in their powerband I guess. Surveys revealed from market data suggested people didn't like the way they sounded because it didn't sound like they were accelerating.

>revs the engine when its cold
no they don't, stop holding your foot on the pedal

I love race-y looking cars like the Evo IX, but this shit is beyond ridiculous. Not even Honda's own fan base is this tasteless. Is all this aero really the only way to make a FWD car as fast as it's similarly priced competitors?

Don't buy a Tib. Literally any Honda is higher quality and more reliable. But memes aside, find an old corolla or something similar. Cars that cheap aren't usually in good condition. So the more reliable, the better

After driving for about 5 years but never owning my own car, I was finally done with school and had some money to spend on myself.

Years of playing driving sims installed a belief that I needed something with rear wheel drive or true all wheel drive, manual gearbox, and a gasoline engine. So I hopped on the used car marketplace, set my criteria, and... it's only BMWs and old Audis. I considered the Toyota RAV4 for a while, but turns out that "4x4" is really just front wheel drive most of the time. Subaru was interesting too, but damn, too rich for my blood.

So I purchased a 2001 3 series. With reluctance. Buying a BMW felt like a breach of my character and values due to the "image" BMW drivers seems to have created for themselves. Despite these negative connotations I held, the car quickly grew on me. Driving it back home after buying it, I was simply amazed at how well it handled. Racing sims aside, driving on the roads is something I try to do with caution. My friend who drove me to the seller threw me a challenge: "I bet you can't overtake every car leaving the ferry". Irrational as I was, I accepted. Thing were going well enough, stupidity aside. But I misjudged a corner and was sure traction would run out. It didn't, Lucky save I guess, but damn, this car felt good. Tho, keep in mind I had driven exclusively FWD station wagons, city cars, and vans.

Half a year and 6000 km later, I still enjoy the car immensely. People told me RWD and snow means no traction, fools I say, it's more fun than motorcycles. Icy roads are not fun tho, that shit is nervous.

But the practical aspects of the car are perhaps not the best. Maintenance and problems are common it seems. But I fix everything myself, not because I'm good at it, but because sending this thing to a shop will quickly become
prohibitively expensive.

Rant aside, here is the question: should I just stick to the E46 forever?; provided I fix shit myself.

Only buy if you have the knowledge to rebuild your engine every year.
But according to /o/ this is NO BIG DEAL.
>>
06+ is when they stopped being pieces of shit.

As long as you do regular maintenance, oil changes every 3k, don't use synthetic as it doesn't mix well with fuel and can cause more carbon buildup than normal.

Always make sure to top up the oil since it gets injected into the housings for lubrication.

Change the coolant every 30k.
