What? Are you sticking out both knees?

You should still have one on the upper side of the tank. You don't want to stay upright, you want to lean with the bike.
>>

That's because you don't stick your knee out. You stick your whole body out and your knee sticks out as a natural consequence.

Not really, it has pretty much identical ergos to a CBR500 except for slightly higher pegs, and the weight isn't much of a problem given how low the seat is.

The VFR800 is probably the most nimble middleweight sportbike ever made. 10/10 ride would recommend over SV650s. Also the early gens are a blast to push around after the stock R/R inevitably fries.

Hey mister, you got any advice for us?
>>
>>16964851
The 5th gen VFRs had R/Rs that were only cooled through (poor) contact with the subframe and minimal airflow, and the subframe didn't run very cool. They lacked cooling fins too, so they tended to fail. A lot of older bikes were like this, but the VFR and VTR were particularly bad for being late 90s bikes, and they're memed up as super reliable so when it happens the emotional hit is a little harder. Everyone I know with one and everyone on the internet with one has either bought an aftermarket R/R or swapped in a yamaha part.

>>16965023
This. At full-braking you're in a near stoppie situation, so your back tire has almost zero grip.

The effort it takes to feather the rear brake to avoid lockup ends up taking an average rider longer to stop because they're not focused on the front brake or avoiding the obstacle. Even racers often don't use their rear brake except for minor adjustments, it's just not worth the effort.

Obviously if a rider is asking what brake to use, he's not trying to practice track techniques and stoppies.

Unless they see them stealing the bike they cant do shit. They arent alowed to chase the thieves either because that would put everyone in risk.
>>
>>16965060
Wasn't a comparison, it was proof that the concept is true.

I assume OP didn't mean "if it's not an emergency and I'm just fucking around,..." which means he would want to brake as efficiently and effectively as possible. And in the real world (for a sport bike, or most any bike going downhill) that means using the front brake pretty much exclusively, at least until you're going slower and the risk of highsiding after rear lock up is minimized.
>>

If you've got no other option, they're just big fast mopeds. Would prefer a bike personally. Or if I REALLY wanted a twist and go, I'd get something like a NC750DCT.
>>
>>16965068

Hate to rain on the parade here, but the rear brake is pretty useful. It loads up the rear suspension ahead of braking zones to take the initial bite out of hard front braking, and backing it in is a good trick for tight corners.

I only race bikes these days, don't do any road riding, and I go through plenty of rear brake pads.

So are bikes like the NC, and you can transport just as much. The front storage unit is easily as big as the storage under the seat of your average scooter. Plus it's nicer to ride outside of an urban environment. NC's are designed to be a big comfy easy to ride bike, and if you want even more comfort there's the DN-01 (but you lose some urban capability there).

I got the a* Corozal boots in brown. They're comfy and nice. Only downsides are that the upper is yuuge and takes a little work to get my riding pants' liner over and that the mechanism that regulates ankle roll on the outside can creak. A dab of some sort of lubricant fixes that; common problem. These things are basically 3/4 of a MX boot and I like it.

It works pretty well for music and GPS directions but voice commands don't work very well because of wind and road noise. Siri keeps hearing background noise so she won't stop listening and just do what the fuck I told her. I need an app that lets me use a command word like "Engage" or "make it so" so that voice recognition will stop listening to noise because it thinks I'm still talking.

Could anyone explain briefly cylinder count to me, in the sense of why should I care about it?

From what I've seen, bikes with less cylinders are usually lighter and torquier, while those with more have more peak power. So off-roaders might have 1 cyl, sports bikes 4, and standard bikes 2 or 4. Is this right?

If I want a standard bike for city/road use (no track), should I pick one with 2 or 4? Or is it irrelevant? I'm guessing a torquier bike might be better for daily riding, but there are plenty of 4 cylinders which I doubt are only sports oriented.

Is maintenance much more expensive in the case of 4 cyl? Are they more or less reliable?

I have a Suzuki GS500 (2 cyl) at the moment, thinking of switching to something bigger.
>>
>>16968053
controlling for displacement and cooling, more cylinders = more power and more complexity

plenty of i4s that will work great for daily riding, eg ninja 1000, gsx1000, bandit, fz1, thunderpussy. when in doubt, try em out and see what you like.

any SAM updates?
>>
So it finally happened after years of riding. Low sided sat night on highway off ramp when the curve of the road hid a patch of gravel. Hit the ground at about 40 and dislocated my shoulder. Bike took a light scratch on one fairing and barely cracked the other. Anyone else have crash stories?

How well does the SV handle crashing?

very well, bar ends, lever, new rearsets. Done. (I had oggy knobs on)

I rode it home from the track.

Nice. Are danmoto rearsets are good? I want something adjustable for my cbr. A longer shifter lever would also help.

>Shinko 705
Just swapped my rear old one for a Anakee Wild on my V-Stronk. The Anakee hooks up SO WELL on dirt/gravel/sand, but I think the 705's better on the street overall.

they're decent overall (mainly because they're pretty cheap), but not great at anything.

no they're awful and I wish I'd never bought them.

-Not every position from the adjustable holes can actually be used because the bolts don't sit flush, this doesn't matter anyway because the top settings are completely unnecessary, not even the shortest man in the world has the legs to sustain that kind of punishment
-the right rearset flexes under modulation of rear brake
-the pegs themselves are quite small and slippery, they have a polished edge which means you can get no purchase if you're the type to perch your feet on the ends of the pegs

I'm swapping them for vortex or sato rearsets sometime, or maybe just trying to find some pegs to swap onto them more like this with some grip on the egde.

Keep in mind a lot of these complaints might just apply to all aftermarket rearsets (regarding position and small size) and I have size 12 romper stompers.

If you're not scraping peg (I was scraping peg with the feelers off) don't bother, just put some skateboard grip tape on the existing pegs.

I did have plenty of life on it after 4500 or so miles, and I wasn't always gentle on the throttle, as well as regularly running 85 or so MPH. Granted, Iowa summertime temps aren't like the desert Southwest, so there's not as much heat stress on the tire, but I was reasonably impressed with its life nevertheless. GS1200 owners bitch about literally every tire, so take their reviews with a grain of salt...
