Alright OP, I don't know anything Honda specific, but here's the process for when I did it on my E30.
>Take off coolant lines
>Drain coolant because it probably has oil in it
>Take off all vacuum lines
>Remove spark plugs
>Remove valve cover
>Remove timing cover
>Rotate engine by hand until it is at top dead center
>Remove timing belt
>Remove exhaust headers
I left my intake manifold on because it was easier and I needed to do the gaskets in there too, you can remove the intake manifold if you like
>Take out all head bolts
>Start lifting off head
>Undo any wires or vacuum lines you forgot
>Scrape off old gasket, clean block
>Inspect block for any warping with straight edge
>Ideally take head to machine shop, at least check for cracks
>Apply new head gasket
>Rotate cams back to top dead center if they've moved
>Carefully put head back on
>Put in new head bolts
>Torque in sequence
>Put on new timing belt
>Put on new timing belt tensioner
>Reassemble engine
>Put all vacuum lines back
>Fill with coolant
>Bleed coolant
>Change oil
>Starter up
I'm sure I forgot some things, but that should give you a rough idea of what to do.
The main thing is to make sure to line the cam(s) up and inspect the head for cracks.
Also make sure to get new head studs or bolts because they stretch when you install them. Also don't forgot to torque in sequence and to the right specs.

It took me about a day and a half to do with two friends helping. We spent about 60% of the time fucking around and none of us knew what we were doing.

Just be careful to clean all the contact surfaces, otherwise the gasket won't seal.

The only thing is you might have some electronics to disconnect.

A 2001 civic isn't really that advanced

Did a headgasket replacement on my 944 with just one of those 180 piece tool sets of ratchets, a tourque wrench, and a hex set.

Just google a guide to it and be prepared to break bolts and round off heads.

Yeah there'll be a bolt on the front where you can turn the crankshaft. You can also POSSIBLY put the car in 5th gear and roll it to turn the engine. You might need a friend and a hill to help you, but I've done this when I'm lazy and just adjusting valves. It won't hurt your engine. Just don't turn it backwards too much.
