Has anyone noticed that all monarchs in history have always been related somehow? Don't you think it could be a big conspiracy of some sort?

What other choice is there? They'd be irrelevant anywhere else. Rome wouldn't give a shit about them, same for the rest of the italics and the barbarians. The other greek cities would be under the influence of either Athens or Sparta, so no go. Egypt and the levant are persian satrapies. There's literally just Persia for them.

Why do urban cultures tend to idealize/romanticize nature?

Rural cultures seem to hate and fear it
35 posts and 9 images submitted.
>>
Romanticizing nature is a relatively modern phenomenon even among urban societies.

Modern people do it because they can experience all the fun and safe stuff nature has to offer (campfires, fishing, sleeping under the stars on a warm night) without having to worry about all the horrible things (winter, shelter from the elements, wild animals and supplies).

Its easy to romanticize something you spend a few weeks a year living before going back home to the wonders of the modern world.

Its also easy to confuse the upper class members of society sending their children out to the "country" to escape the toxic conditions of thousands of people living on top one another but the reality is they would live on a well guarded and supplied country estate with a manor and dozens of servants.

Because rual cultures are trying to live on top of ecological systems rather than withen them, even then they often have a great deal of respect for nature, John Muir grew up as a settler ffs.
That's why aboriginal cultures that belong to complex socio-ecological systems, have a greater admiration for nature, and the same for urbanites with higher ecological literacy.
Greater experiential/traditional/scientific ecological knowledge=greater understanding and appreciation of nature.
Look at picture related, who do you think cares about these creatures the barrons and labourers of the fishing industry and naive consumers, or subsistence fishermen and marine biologists?

Where /pol/ describes it as the cancerous spread of degeneracy, Cornel West recently described (I think) the same phenomena as the "Gangsterization" of American culture.

>Oligarchic Economy
>Plutocracy
>"Amused at death", implicitly consenting to it
>General feelings of helplessness, impotence
>Narcissism
>Subservient to Power
>Traumatized by market driven Darwinism

(~7:00 minutes in if you're interested: http://radioopensource.org/american-experiment-part-1-steering-titanic/)

What do you think? Is the US morphing into a nasty Central American shithole?

I think there is a highly regarded "opportunism" in American culture and this is often an asset. But it seems we've been off the rails for awhile. What would an improvement look like?

Do you think there is a philosophy or perspective that can seem more compelling than the "ima get mine" ethic that pervades the US? I wish I could think of a "cool" counter to the gangster aesthetics that seem so integral to appreciating American culture at the moment.

Will it require a massive crisis to discredit these memes? Or do you think there's inspiring visions that could push us past this ugliness?

No, it would be enough for corporate CEO's to stop hoarding billions of dollars that they get thru tax havens and backdoor contracts with the gov't. If those hundreds of billions of dollars were circulating thru the economy and not being held motionless in swiss banks then regular plebs wouldn't be so desperate to "get mine" and might pursue slightly less destructive life projects

The American Revolution has often been taught to kids in American schools as a teleological certainty, a necessary event for the rest of American history to unfold the way it has, on behalf of freedom. Yet while this mythic narrative of the Revolution has served the needs of promoting American exceptionalism and assimilating children, especially immigrant children, into the folds of American flag waving and citizenship, it has always seemed like pretty shitty historical analysis to me because it was a story based not so much on the careful interpretation of evidence, as it was a feel good story based on the needs of American nationalism.

So I've begun to take a second, closer look and try to determine, based on the evidence, whether the American Revolution was justifiable. What do you think /his/?

In particular, I would like to focus on whether the American Revolution was or was not justifiable with consideration towards its main intent/outcome. Since this is such a subjective topic and is bound to get heated, I would simply ask that we keep to empirical fact based analysis rather than getting into how we feel too much, though obviously some feeling/extrapolation may be necessary.

no revolution is justifiable, it's simply usurpation. and revolution always leads to civil war.
>>
who the fuck cares. so if you determine that the revolution wasn't "justifiable" through some half-baked metaphors and arbitrary standards, what difference does it make? are you gonna go back in time and change it? are you gonna change your life at all? no. who the fuck cares. do your homework and fuck off

uh history is just for fun, it's not real or important, better to have a country myth than care about what really happened since no one can ever know
