Have there ever been any historical example of children actively fighting in war Pre-WW1.

Nelson's Navy had midshipmen as young as 12

The US Civil War. Children as young as 8 were employed in various roles. 8 year olds were called "powder monkeys" on ships because they delivered black powder to the cannons iirc... There were a lot of roles like the drummer boy and such that a small child could take and travel with the regiment and experience combat. The number of child soldiers during the US Civil War was in the tens of thousands I believe.
>>
Children weren't even considered children until the mid 1800s.

Young children would perform non-combat roles tied to an army, young teens would be eligible to participate in combat.

Child soldiers as we see them today are relatively new and are only viable because of modern weapons.

Who is the greatest modern artist of all time?

My choice is Dali, followed up by Max Ernst, Joan Miro, and Pablo Picasso

Greatest probably Picasso by virtue of his craft, innovation, and influence. Duchamp a close second but he doesn't really have the kind of stature that Picasso has, even though his innovation and influence is greater. But greatness doesn't really matter so I prefer Duchamp because I'm not really into the 'exclusive modernism' of formalism. Pollock is also a great.

What the fuck was his problem?

How can I be a Christian if I don't think that Jesus rose from the dead?

I dig a lot of the philosophy within the bible, I dig that Christianity is great at building social cohesion, etc.

Though, all the paranormal stuff surrounding Jesus, and the Tall Tales in the Old Testament are off-putting, you know?

I'd love to go to church with a chick and shit, but I roll my eyes when they talk about him rising from the dead

Wat do

xD

Religious/philosophical question here. Ive been atheist or agnostic for most of my life. My family was never religious per say, the first time I went to church was when I was 8. Most existential questions I presented to my parents were answered with "gee idk OP". Throughout my early teens I mostly took a hedonistic approach, I thought pleasure was the purpose of life. In my later teens I began to place more importance on the furthering of humanity as a whole, the pursuit of knowledge, technology, health, and overall well being. My beliefs have become much more "conservative" or traditionalist over the last 4-5 years. I no longer relate to the concept of humanity as a whole, Ive lost a feeling of hopefulness and optimism. Instead of identifying myself as human I started to identify myself as solely European. I tried to find purpose through European culture and Germanic/Norse paganism because I felt that it would offer an outlook that most popular religions didnt. I became interested in pagan reconstructionism, research papers pertaining to archeology, and analysis of sagas and Eddic poems/lit. It may be misguided but I feel like Ive attained somewhat of an understanding of their beliefs. Part of me feels satisfied with living a life according to their practices and beliefs. However Im still experiencing existential crises. To live a virtuous/honorable life so that I can die and be buried in a burial mound with my family sounds great. I would live by a code of honor anyway even if there was no reward. The question I have in the first place is "why are we here?" and nothing seems to answer it.

>tldr; Im an Odinist/heathen who wants the perspective of other heathens and non-heathens on the purpose of life.

>>

Yes it was. British involvement over Belgium was merely an excuse to get into the war, as it threatened to usurp the balance of power that was in their favor.

Overall, everyone had incredibly selfish reasons for getting in the war, and everyone had very selfish goals. America's probably the closest to a "good guy" you can get, but even then there was a lot of politicking around to brew up casus belli in 1917. In terms of war goals, America probably had the most benevolent goals as well, pushing Wilson's naively idealistic 14 Points.

Is America truly a "democracy", or is it a country that depends more on the rule of law (the Constitution) rather than elected officials?

I mean if it were truly a "democracy" as people say, constitutional rules would be overruled by the people, quite easily. And no group of voters has been able to cuck the Constitution that greatly.

So if the common voter cannot change federal law as easily as other countries, wouldn't that make America more of a illiberal democracy?

What are some good literary works to aid in removing preconceived notions and prejudices from the human mind? I believe, after years of browsing /pol/ and accepting all statements at face value, that I am troubled by severe cognitive dissonance. What books can aid in becoming more receptive and questioning? Pic unrelated.

The key is independent and critical thought. Honestly, even if it isn't necessarily the most exciting or obscure works, I would start with Aristotle's rhetoric and Plato's The Republic. Philosophy and writing, both, do a lot to aid to critical thinking skills, which are a necessity to escaping the hive.

Like >>2583942 said, you could honestly start with anything you wanted as long as you dedicated yourself to understanding their point and how they came to those conclusions through their evidence. Also, for the love god, check your sources and always question the intention of the piece you're presented with - especially if you have a history of /pol/-ism

I'm interested in narratology, mainly in the way video games an literature (not saying it's similar) approach narrative. Keywords: Gene Wolfe, Virginia Woolf, Undertale, MGS 2 etc.

Now I've looked up linguistics but the whole studyplan is, and I'm not exaggerating

>go and record some local dialect and analyze it (in this case gypsies)
>logic
>anatomy (of the mouth)

etc

So as far as I understand it's only possible to get to narratology after you do 4 years of this crap. Is there a better course to take because frankly I can perhaps take semiotics (though this is also mainly taught on Philosophy post grad) or I can study ANY language and then also go to narratology and the like after that.

But why the hell there isn't a program that teaches this all 4 years? There are so many shit degrees, I'm not looking for a job, I want education regarding this, I already worked at a call centre and similar shit jobs.

If you want to see what I like, read Avatars of Story.

study literature or cultural studies and try to find out which program specialize in what kinds of areas.Inside of linguistics, if anything that would be sociolinguistics (discourse analysis etc.)

linguistics is very diverse as a field which can be frustrating for undergrads who are only interested in one area and have to study a bit of all of them, some of which consist of bogus theories that have no relation whatsoever to reality.

however what you describe are normal parts of any linguistics program
>go and record some local dialect and analyze it
linguistic fieldwork and grammatical description - an important subfield
>logic
some people think they can study meaning in language with a formal logic approach, i think it's useless but it's pretty standard in some dominant schools of semantics - another important subfield
>anatomy of the mouth
this is essential knowledge for any student of linguistics, but especially important for those interested in phonetics - another important subfield
>>
>>2583839
This is really unrelated to linguistics, OP. Try a comparative literature department.
>>
>>2583941
yeah but none of that stuff gives much insight, you're only going to bea poor man's defectologist with that important anatomy of the mouth shit as for logic, it goes without saying that you should be able to support your argument, it's not like you're going to solve complex equations.

as for the fieldwork, stuff like that is nonsensical, you don't need to go to the ghetto in 21st century to know how niggers speak, it's bullshit work akin to sending sociology students to do 'polls'

To be honest, there are literarlly so many I can't even begin to recommend some. If you go into the subfolder called Osprey, you will find a fairly short book on almost every military unit and/or topic you could possibly think of. I read War Elephants, Navy SEALS, English Longbowmen, Napolean's Navy, Napolean's Artillery and that is probably less than 1%. I also read a few of the books on medieval warfare and those were really cool. My recommendation is to dive in and see what you can find in there since there is literally so much.

Here is a link to another collection of war books which is largely redundant but you might find the organization easier to understand.
