Hey co/ck/s
I want to start sharpening my own knives, both because they need sharpening and for "hobby".

I'm not on a particularly good budget, but not entirely poor either.

Tips?

>>
Get 15 japanese whetstones with different grits and post about your superior sharpening on 4chan. Your knives will be extremely sharp.
>>
I'm pretty new here but why can't you just sharpen one knife with another one's dull edge? That's how I do it anyways.
>>
>>8959167
because no.
you basically try to realign the edge, what most people have a honinh steel for, that doesnt make your knife any sharper though, just realignes the blade to a, hopefully, more central position.

to op, a good wetstone will be about 40-60

I got a gift card to Longhorn as a gift. Normally I like to cook my own steak because I know how I like it so I never go to steak houses, especially the franchise ones.

Anyway, whats the best steak to get off of their menu? Their cut choices are sirloin, ribeye, fillet mignon, t-bone, NY strip, porterhouse, and prime rib.

When I cook steak for myself I like it nice and rare because I'm a sane, well adjusted human being. Not blue rare, but close to it honestly. The cuts I usually cook for myself are tomhawk/cowboy cuts, ribeyes, or NY strips. I bought a cowboy steak once on a whim and cooked it really low and slow and it was one of the best steaks I ever had - hard to cook correctly though.

What should I order? I heard flat iron steaks are good, or is that a meme?

flat irons are flavorful and the second most tender cut on the cow. How can you not like them?
>>
Prime rib medium rare with horse radish and a side of sautéed mushrooms. Any steakhouse will carry it and it's delicious.
>>

I just never had them. I typically buy the cuts I do because they go on sale and I know how to cook them.

i always buy the ugly gray meat in the "quick sale" section. it's just as good.

supermarkets use tricks to give meat that bright red myoglobin color: gasses, nitrates, etc.

Can't smell it, but looks fine. Bright red meat is a marketing meme.

Welcome to the /ck/ challenge: Monthly edition: Thread 3!

The theme is announced on the 1st of every month, and submissions are welcome all month!

SCORING GUIDELINES

We recommend an 'Iron Chef' style scoring system. This means you, the people of /ck/, will judge each entry individually instead of deciding on what you feel is the "best" dish.

Dishes are scored out of a total 20 points, based on 4 categories (worth a maximum of 5 points each); Presentation, Originality, Appeal and Challenge Goals. You may award 0's if you feel the contestant did not meet your expectations for a category.

-Presentation: The appearance of items on the plate; plating skills
-Originality: Creativity in composing the dish
-Appeal: How appetizing the food looks/whether or not the dish appeals to your personal taste as a voter
-Challenge Goals: How closely the entry followed the challenge goal(s)

The distinction between Presentation and Appeal: If someone submits an artfully arranged but burnt steak as an entry, it may score high in Presentation but low in appeal.

***
Copypasta Scoring Format for Lazymodo

Presentation: /5
Originality: /5
Appeal: /5
Challenge Goals: /5
Total: /20

The theme for May is SANDWICH. Simple enough, right?
Well, that depends on how simple you want your entry to be. Be creative, go a bit nuts with it, you're too attached to your dignity anyway.

While you're perfectly welcome to make a large spread of food, please make sure there is clearly a SANDWICH because that is what people will be voting on.

Why the fuck does Egg Drop Soup or Sweet and Sour/ Hot and Sour Soup not come canned in grocerys tores from companies like Campbells, Progresso, and Marie Calendars?

Is it from anti asian sentiments?

>>
>>8960200
I don't think it would hold up well to being canned.
>>
that's actually an interesting question.

>Is it from anti asian sentiments?

lol, no, i doubt it.

>>8960202

>I don't think it would hold up well to being canned.

the base itself would be fine. i would imagine it would be somewhat difficult to make the egg behave uniformly through the canning process. but they could always sell it and just have you whisk the egg through at home, that fits in well with the whole cake mix/packet jello 'diy' marketing strategy that is so successful with other ubiquitous products.

dehydrate and rehydrate egg noodles like in cup of noodles maybe?

but then again could be too delicate.
