Case in point is the first two girls I fell for in college. Number one, it was super fucking awkward. I told her I liked her, she said she was sorry but could only see me as a friend. I felt bad but we kept trying to be friends, sorta. Except she treated me differently and was uncomfortable around me from then on out. So I felt bad and wound up treating her badly. So we stopped talking. End.

Second girl: I told her I liked her, she said "Yeah, I know. Sorry man, I just don't feel that way about you. We're good friends though so let's get past this." Shit was awkward as fuck for a couple months. Then we got back from the summer and started talking and hanging out as though nothing had ever happened between us. We stayed friends for years after that.

The tl;dr of it is that getting through the speedbump of unrequited love requires effort on *both sides*. When it goes sour is just as much the fault of the person rejecting the feelings as the person with the feelings.
