One of my longest friends threw himself off a bridge last night an hour after I saw him and I couldn't care less. He's alive, but in the hospital.

men: is it shitty to disqualify you automatically based on social standing?

Well, we never had a "real relationship" because i was young and it was a long distance relationship, but we had a long term friendship. In fact, he was my only friend when i was a teenager, not because i couldn't get any friends but because i only wanted him.

Nonyoure not wrong your friend sounds like he's insecure. I've dealt with several people like this mainly because I used ton be the same way. He's in a state where he constantly needs affirmation that his friends like him and he'll ask questions like that from time to time.
I can't tell you a definate way to deal with this but you can try discreetly calling him out on it next time he does it and explain to him that when he asks these questions he's giving the impression that either he has poor self-esteem or he doesn't know how to talk to other people. Then tell him to stop seeking others' approval and start seeking his own approval. He needs to start speaking in a positive way towards himself and stop relying on others decide what's wrong with him.
Just tell him as sincerely as possible that he's a good friend and you hate to see him cut himself down in front of others.
