>bought a Saturn with no games
>games are expensive so I hold off
>in the meantime I've bought 5 other consoles, a Genesis, Dreamcast, Xbox, 360 and SNES
>only own games for the 360
>keep buying hardware
Instead of software
Is it starting?

Is WHAT starting, bro?
You need to mod the Saturn and Xbox then get some flashcarts. Just never even start with the software collecting.
>six consoles in total
Not really hoarding at this point, but don't bother buying any games. All of those consoles have methods of loading game backups, and you should exclusively stick to those unless you plan to collect, and even then not for multiple consoles.
Invest in component cables for the five consoles that aren't the 360, and have a component switch connected to a decent CRT. Connect the 360 to a 720p LED TV via HDMI.
From there, mod the consoles that need it and invest in flashcarts for the others so you can just load backups instead of paying thousands for a modest "essential games" collection.
Let's talk about retro (pre-2000) browser games. Anyone else loved Neopets back in the day?
>>3836987
>neopets is retro
well fuck me i'm old.
>>3836994
Only barely. It launched November 1999.
I liked Dragon Court in the past. I never got involved in clans/guilds or whatever, but I liked making lots of characters and just clicking through the fights.
Recently I thought to go play again, but the entire Fiends site was shut down in 2015, and I think the first Dragon Court game is technically still up, but you can't make new characters, and my old characters were deleted. I'm sure there are plenty of simple browser RPGs like it, but I don't know any.

what're your favorite real time strategy games?
mine's pic related. i've been wanting to play settlers 3 for nostalgia, but the only version i can find requires a serial key, so i've been playing 4.
honorable mention to galactic battlegrounds
>tfw just barely retro
I know it sounds very mainstream, but for me the best single player RTS campaign is Starcraft+Broodwar and multiplayer is AOE2+expansions.

Is it, dare I say, the greatest belt scroller of all time?
How does the Hyperstone belt sander compare to this one?
>>3836906
Is this on the 3ds yet?
Streets of Rage 2 is, and it isn't even close.
English patch hwen?
>inb4 snobs brag about knowing japanese
Learn japanese.
I'm thinking about doing this. It would probably come out only in 2019, though.

tried. gave up after hitting the impossible kanji wall
What's your favourite shmups /vr/?
what is that one where there is like... a giant fish? or giant fish skeleton? with like a big red eye in the center of its skull. i remember it only very vaguely
>>3836179
Could be one of many Darius games, infamous for giant fish monster bosses. OP's pic is Super Aleste / Space Megaforce.
Compile, Hudson, Konami and Taito put out some really fun shmups in their day. Oddly though, I don't like Treasure. People gush about them, but they make weird design choices. Just give me a basic kit and some popcorn and I'm good to go.
>>3836174
Sweet
What's your opinion on hidden blocks in SMB1?
Personally, I am divided about them. On the one hand, they're cool as secrets and add depth to the game. On the other, how are you supposed to learn about them? It's either about pure luck, or having read about them from somewhere.
they do a bit of work to telegraph them actually. That one being placed between a bush and a hill is a bit of psychological play and actually teaches the player how some are placed in positions quite like that.
They aren't unfair and are a nice bonus. They are also not necessary, as such a fairness factor isn't a real concern.
>>3835807
>That one being placed between a bush and a hill is a bit of psychological play
Hm, never noticed that. But what about these 6 ones in the middle? They only have coins, but I'm not sure how you'd even assume they're here.
>>3835807
>They are also not necessary
This is the only reason I don't dislike them in the series. It's nice to hide a bonus for players that have a sharp eye but they should never be required to beat the level, game, etc.
What the f*ck was his problem?
>>3835067

he was pretending to be ziegfried.

Nope.

Does /vr/ like fishing games? What are your favorites?
There's really only one fishing game I liked, but to be honest, I'd recommend it to anyone.
Honestly?Breath of Fire III
>>3834680
Same. Maybe Ocarina of Time.
What's your favorite /vr/ art books?
>>3834342
That one is pretty good; I just got it the other day. My favorite ones would be Capcom Design Works and The Art of Oddworld probably
>>3834342
got this when it first came out
>>3834342
I'd love to see a Mario artbook like the Zelda one collecting all that classic airbrushed goodness up to SM64
Does anyone here remember Blasto! ?
As a wee chile, I remember being impressed with its graphics. But replaying it as an adult I was less impressed, mainly due to gameplay. What do you guys think of it?
I only ever played the demo from the sampler disc. I loved the demos of this, Jersey Devil, and Tomba but I never actually played the full games. That's something I'm planning on changing this year.
>>3833451
it had einhander and spyro too right?
The toys r us one?
What an awesome demo disc
>>3833475
EINHANDER oh my god thank you for reminding of the name of that game.
Which retro console had the biggest percentage of shovelware/kusoge? I'm planning on doing a chrontendo/nes mania hybrid and i want to hate myself and life at general
Not counting stuff like Atari 5200 and below and consoles that only had 30 games (and half of them clones) of course
>>3832202
>Which retro console had the biggest percentage of shovelware/kusoge?
All the popular consoles, that had a great install base, ended up with a lot of shovelware, since greater install base means that you can sell more even of the shittiest titles.
NES, SNES, Playstation, are all guilty of this. Saturn had a lot too, but the worst were confined to Japan. Genesis had... a lot of poor games, but very few REALLY poor ones like all the above, so I guess that had the least amount of shovelware.
This is not counting consoles that had like 50 games total, of which all but maybe two or three were decent. It would be really unfair to include failed systems like those (Jaguar, 32x, 3DO, Virtual Boy, PC-FX, CD32...).
Discounting the VCS, probably Game Boy
>>3832217
Definitely the gameboy, if Jeremy Parish's Gameboy World is anything to go by. Although he's quite good, the chronology is almost unwatchable simply because the majority of games covered are pointless shovelware.
Let's just do a thread about preservation in general
>How complete must a romset be to be "complete"?
>How can one ethically hold undumpedhopefully just unreleasedROMs?
>How shockingly incomplete is the software archive for your favorite obscure console or retro computer?
So we've had a couple less than successful "/vr/ archaeology" threads but this thing with byuu's brown bavarian box really got me thinking about what incredibly diverse standards the community has for different platforms. Here Byuu is obsessively REDUMPING dumped roms using his personal ultra-accurate method officially just to get the hashes while Nemesis over at assemblergames is the first person to even attempt to undertake comprehensive ripping of the Laseractive library - of which original versions are skyrocketing so bad it makes me afraid he's got an uphill battle.
http://gendev.spritesmind.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=563
If someone holds onto previously unreleased/unripped roms then they arent doing it for "preservation".
If the only known physical copy is in their possession and the only known tom copy is in their possession, then the data is at the same risk of being lost forever.
The data needs to be propagated throughout the community for it to be preserved.
>>3831669
This whole story with byuu and his redumps reminds me of shiny Pokemon. Old autism wasn't good enough anymore, so we needed some next level of autism. Serves right the author of the emulator who talks that only with 3GHz processor you can get perfect Pong emulation at 5-10fps.
It's good enough that enthusiasts have dumped all these ROMs and uploaded them online for free. Treating it like a Pokemon hunt is just autism at full force. People spend more time obsessing over games themselves than playing them and it's just sad. Expecting to find diamonds among the undumped games is some intense wishful thinking.
Retro game girls who can get the dick.
>>3829390
But that's from kof13
>>3829390
not retro
It's canon that they can and DO get it, since they give birth.
