Is it worth playing the SNES version of Tales of Phantasia or does the PS1 version improve on it on every way?
Also if not ToP what are some other decent non-FF/DQ JRPG's to kill some time on my SNES. Energy Breaker looks interesting, but the character sprites are kinda ugly
Try Bahamut Lagoon or Star Ocean? Or Seikendensetsu 3?
>>3826915
Star Ocean was great, which is part of why I want to try Phantasia.
Bahamut Lagoon never really clicked for me. I found the battle system really unwieldy when compared to the other great SRPG's of that generation
>>3826910
>Energy Breaker
that's an obscure one, still have to finish it
Try Treasure Hunter G
The package was located in a mail recovery center in Georgia, and it's been delivered. Byuu plans to offer full refunds to anyone who donated to him. https://byuu.org/emulation/preservation/found-package/Do you think it's a scam, /vr/?

I still don't get the point of an "archive" if it's all going to stay holed up on his hard drive.
Why did Super Nintendo games sound very muffled and reverby?
>>3839672
A few reasons:
1) Without going into to much detail, the decoded drops 1 out of every 4 bits.
2) Unconfigurable gaussian filter applied on output
3) APU coprocessor memory space made fitting code, sound, and music in the same small 64k memory space challenging. You could get around this with modest effort and careful sample compression, but not all companies had that kind of talent or time.

First post best post.
Now let us commence 60 replies about how the Genesis sounds like robot farts.
>>3839683
remember when your robot farted and it sounded like kid chameleon? good times
>1996
>be 12 years old
>be hyped as FUCK for the N64 ever since seeing it in Nintendo Power earlier in the years as the Ultra 64
>GET it for Christmas w/ Super Mario 64
>It's everything I ever dreamed of
Literally the best day and week of my life. Nothing else comes close. It's all been downhill since, boys.
And just think, there's countless 12 year old boys today getting a PS4 and Call of Duty for their birthday or whatever. It will be the most magical week of their lives, and all video game experiences will be downhill for them after that.
>>3839579
I don't think it will be the same for them because those games will not be the same leap over what was out previously.
When I played Super Mario 64 for the first time I had a hard time adjusting to the 3d game world because my brain literally did not understand it that well yet. I would get lost in Bob-omb Battlefield. A kid who is playing today won't have that problem because they've probably already played a PS3 or an Xbox 360 with very similar games.
I used to stare at the images in the issue of Nintendo Power where the N64 was unveiled at Nintendo Space World of that year and just wonder.
I totally bought into the marketing hype for the system at the time as well (come on, I was 12). I really thought the N64 was the most powerful home computer you could buy.
>>3839579
can't be that magical sitting around doing nothing while psn is getting ddos'd :^)
She gave me a pantyhose fetish as well.

As a kid, I had a thing for Street Fighter'sCammy.
But as a teenager, DOA2 Ultimate was a gift from the gods.
If you honestly did this pls kys
>>3838441
You can say I was a fan of Phantasy Star. Rika was my first.
Who actually beat this on the NES? It's like 5 hours long and when you die in world 8 you have to start from the beginning. Do you think using warp whistles is legitimate in this game?
me, yes, shitty thread
seriously, what is your endgame with this? waste of a good thread getting bumped
>legitimate
It's not cheating, no. Just that clearing the game with no warps is more difficult and thus more of an accomplishment.
I don't really like using the warps in Mario because of how jarring the shift in difficulty is between the earlier and later levels.
>>3838351
>Who actually beat this on the NES?
Literally everyone
Have you played SEGA Saturn today?
Yes
I had an itch for some Mortal Kombat 2
>>3838323
I haven't been able to play my Sega Saturn ever since it turned into a gazelle and ran off. 9 years ago.
>>3838323
I used it to play music CDs.
Want to get into Tekken should I bother with the first two or just jump straight into 3?
play the original, it was one of the revolutionary new 3D fighters of the time.
If youre really interested, play the first two to get some grounding/backstory/familiar-ness.
3 is going to be the most playable though.
I recommend playing the first two at least once. Arcade Mode shouldn't take more than 20 minutes each.
I recommend spending a little more time on Tekken 2. There's some pretty good stuff there, and the narrator is pretty. Try to unlock every character, shouldn't take more than 2 hours. You can put number of Rounds on 1 to help.
>Whatever
VIIIfags, not even once.
Anyone know what happened to this guy, anyway? I think he was released from prison long ago. I bet he's enjoying his fame to fuck as many sluts as possible until his next breakdown bursts out.
He was freed after just 8 years of prison after having killed his whole family with a katana, nothing personal-style.
>>3836763
Why the fuck didn't he use a gunblade?
I don't even think he was an actual FF8 fan.
Probably would've rather sucked Sephiroth's dick over Squall's.
>>3836763
A little less quicker rundown?
So did the first Legend of Zelda come with a map or anything? There's this section in the manual, but I'm trying to play this game without looking up extra help at all, just from stuff that the you would have had come with the game.
Navigating the overworld without a full map is a bit difficult though.
Ganbare, OP. It's tough but you can do it.
>>3836463
This is the map that came with the original game. Using it and the manual is what we all did back when the game was released and is not considered extra help. You'll still need to do a lot of bombing and burning things to find secret entrances.
You'd probably figure this out on your own pretty early, but the one piece of advice I'd give is thatthere is never more than one secret on an individual map screen. If there's a secret to be found, you can move on to the next screen after you find it.
>>3836495
Is there generally hints to the locations of places to bomb or things to burn or is it like Wolfenstein 3d where you find the secrets by running around with your face mashed into the wall mashing the "use" key?
>implying this isn't the best platformer ever

So now that it's pretty much official the best Zelda game is not /vr/ related anymore and the pressure is off, can we have an actual discussion about which retro Zelda we like best?
For me it's pic related: innovative, atmospheric and still challenging.
>>3835783
>best Zelda game is not /vr/ related anymore
What do you mean anymore? Twilight Princess was released 11 years ago.
>>3835787
sooo retro, i bet all the other kids at lunch play ps4 lol but not you, you still play retro gamecube
Member me, /vr/?
Can't wait to play games on a cheapo capture card!
I have a confessionI still have a tiny shred of optimism for Kevtris's core-changing SD loading FPGA console
Somebody slap me

>I still have a tiny shred of optimism for Kevtris's core-changing SD loading FPGA console
Kevtris can actually make it.
That was the difference.
Kevtris was originally on that faggots Coleco Chameleon team back before it was even called the Retro VGS afaik. He left due to differences or pay disputes I think.
Kevtris is a technical genius. But the dude can't make a good youtube video to save his life.
Which is the better Mario classic?
Super Mario World has the better flying powerup, better soundtrack, and Yoshi.
Super Mario Bros. 3 has such wonky difficulty spikes and the super leaf controlled like ass. Hammer Bros suit is still amazing.

>better flying powerup
> better soundtrack
Grade A shitpost
>>3833049
I loved them both.
Both are masterpieces.
