I want to play Final Fantasy, since I never had the chance to do so when I was a kid

Should I follow the full trail 1-8 (The rest are not really in my interest) or should I ignore some shitty releases?

You can if you want, just play the game that interest you since there is no canon or universal storyline or whatever. I recommend FF3, FF5, and FF6 personally.
>>
>>2905606
GBA or PSP version of FF1 and 2 if you want something easier, PSX if you want a polished but original experience.

NES or PSP version of Final Fantasy 3, your choice.

DS version of FF4 if you want a challenge, SNES or GBA otherwise. Same with FF5 and 6. If you play 6 on the GBA, apply the color patch.

Your choice of PC port or PSX original of FF7.

PSX of 8 and 9.

It depends on how much you like older RPGs.

2 is almost universally considered the worst and everyone recommends skipping it. I would personally recommend skipping over 1 and 3 as well because I'm not a huge fan of 8-bit RPGs, and both of those games were released before the Final Fantasy series started to develop more intricate stories (which is important to me in an RPG), but if those things aren't a big deal to you, you might like them.

4 is the first one I can recommend wholeheartedly, 6 is amazing too. I've never played 5 but a lot of people like it. Starting with the Playstation FFs isn't bad either. Basically I wouldn't recommend playing through them all in order, but instead skipping around based on what looks good to you. If you played them in order, you'd probably get burned out before you got to 6 and 7, which many people consider to be two of the best.

Is there a reason you're willing to go up through 8 and not play 9? 9 is my personal favorite, I can't recommend it enough.

Are there any good after market controllers or should I just stick with getting the originals? Bought one of these awhile back and the d-pad felt incredibly stiff and the C and Z buttons squeak whenever I pressed them.

it depends. but, after market 6-button genesis controllers are notoriously shitty quality, and the one in OP look to be no different.
>>
It can be difficult to get original controllers in usable condition and all third party controllers are garbage, despite people claiming otherwise.

The same is true for almost every console.
>>
The Hori FC4 is pretty good if you want a controller with 6 face buttons, and the Buffalo SNES pad is a really cheap and surprisingly high quality option for games that don't require more than 8 buttons. Logitech controllers are probably the best you can get with native xinput support. Aside from that, stick with originals.

Hi /vr/, I have a question about buying a composite to HDMI converter for my Nintendo 64. Before you even write a comment about saying how it will look like shit, input lag, etc: it's my only option right now. Anyway, I'm deciding between these two upscalers and I'm trying to decide which one to buy.

This one (the one I'm thinking of getting): http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00I482KZI/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1452324874&sr=8-2&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=enKo+Products&dpPl=1&dpID=41oPmvNCilL&ref=plSrch

Or this one: http://m.miniinthebox.com/en/mini-av-female-to-hdmi-female-converter-rca-to-hdmi-1080p-converter-for-tv-vhs-vcr-dvd-records_p1892143.html?currency=USD&litb_from=&adword_mt=&adword_ct=53357214134&adword_kw=&adword_pos=1o1&adword_pl=&adword_net=g&adword_tar=&adw_src_id=2014606789_261612014_15158854934_pla-102087482414&gclid=CI2Jw6ebnMoCFQsjHwodv_MDHQ

Like I said, it's really my only option right now and I just don't want to deal with RGB and all of that stuff. Thanks.

Just use the TV input.

I want it to look somewhat better though. It's either composite or the upscaler.

A model 2 Sega CD and a model 2 Genesis are merged. Does the audio sound better if one uses the RCA audio jacks on the SegaCD rather than staying with the AV cable coming out the Genesis?
If you use the SegaCD RCA audio jacks and play a regular Genesis game (or 32X game) will you still get sound?
I know that music CDs play sound with the regular Genesis AV cable plugged into the TV.
What does the mixing port do?

How many metal pieces come with the SEGA CD (and the 32X)?
What happens if you are missing some or all of these pieces?

Does have the Sega CD installed (or the 32X installed) prevent you from using the powerbase converter (or playing SMS ROMS on an everdrive)?

Wow which YouTuber did you get that from, kid?
>>
Good choice on the model 2 Gen and model 2 SCD, easily the sexiest looking combo.

>"What happens if you are missing some or all of these pieces?"

Literally nothing. They're included to comply with FCC guidelines concerning radio interference. Hypothetically they could disrupt devices nearby but if you have no troubles with this, the metal bits are not necessary.

Also I recommend you check out Soulstar and the Misadventures of Flink.

Somehow I want to translate this image to find out what it says. The text is very low-res, and it would be difficult to. Nintendo of Japan still has the webpage but the text is a mess of characters and symbols that I am unable to translate.

I really feel like this game is awfully ignored.

Isn't it the scariest retrogame to this day? I can play all REs and SH fine, but this is just so eerie.

Also, I can't find infos about its development, cut content, trivias or anything. How do I even explore the content of its PAK files.

Personally, I'd vote for the earlier Clock Towers

>I really feel like this game is awfully ignored.
The series tends to be ignored since they were very rough. It created the whole 3D survival horror type of gameplay, but it was flawed. Combat was a nightmare, even moreso if you had to use melee. They also suffered from Adventure Game Syndrome. Oh, you didn't know you were supposed to bring some item into this room that you haven't encountered yet? You die now. Have fun figuring out why!

I'll give them credit for being halfway fun back then, but the reason everyone remembers the Resident Evil series and Silent Hill series and Clock Tower series and even Dino Crisis series more is because they were more polished and suffered less from AGS.

Still, very creepy games, the Lovecraft-ish plot works well for the first game and I wish they stuck with it. Ghost pirates and ghost cowboys just aren't as creepy.
>>
AITD is awfully underrated, or ignored if you will. Everyone knows it created the 3rd person style survival horror used up to the Wii/PS3 generation, but not many people seem to realize it's the entire industry that owes a lot to it, not just survival horror.
It created the whole "3D models in 2D pre-rendered backgrounds" to come around technical limits, and this was used in tons of genre then. For instance can you imagine Final Fantasy 7/8/9 without it ?

>Also, I can't find infos about its development, cut content, trivias or anything.

IMO one of the things that cursed the series was the departure of Frederic Raynal after 1. He and Infogrammes disagreed on the direction AITD2 should take so he left early in development. Now though, 2,3 (and A New Nightmare) are all good games, but they come off lacking the "visionary" touch which 1 had.
When the japs are able to make great sequels when the "main guy" is barely involved anymore if at all, see RE and SH sequels, the French don't seem to be able to.

Anyway the disagreement I just mentioned was due to infogrammes willing to make AITD2 more action oriented, which it did become. Per se it may not be a bad idea, and it's quite funny when you think about it how even for that they were ahead of its time (Dino Crisis 2 to DC1 is what AITD2 is to AITD1... even that AITD did first). Now the problem with 2 is that it's like it doesn't fully accept its action orientation, they should have improved the controls to support that direction. It's like the game isn't sure what it should be or not.

So I've had this Gameboy since about 1995 and it's been stored in a box for a while, and when I found it again to try to play it, it had these weird streaks on the screen.
Adjusting the contrast didn't help much, and when looking up the problem, I could only find a problem where there were dead pixels and dead lines, whereas these lines aren't dead and can move on the screen. There was nothing in the stickied threads links that would help either. Maybe I'm just bad at looking things up. It does it with several games. Do any of you know how to fix this?
Pic related. It's the gameboy.

You will never play the first console/Nintendo polygonal 3D game for the first time ever again

You will never fly with your pet bros and save Slippy's stupid ass for the first time again

You will never destroy the multi-layered boss's ass and then shoot the credits up for the first time ever again

I don't even get how anyone could live with themselves if they didn't live through the experience of playing this as their first 3D game, it was one of the real few milestones in vidya

I was playing X-Wing on PC long before Starfox came out. While I acknowledged it was an impressive showcase of the Super NES's capabilities, I never got that WOW-factor from it because I had already seen plenty of low-polygonal starfighters.
