Since the Open Game License allows for retroclones, will we ever see a clone of 4E?
Perhaps one that condenses and fixes some things, like what Pathfinder was to 3.5?
4e isn't under the OGL, but that doesn't mean we won't see a game in the same mold being created. It'll just have to be distinct enough from 4e to avoid legal issues. Although, interesting thing? You can't copyright game mechanics. Certain monsters and names would have to be changed, but you could rewrite every single page of 4e rules and republish them 100% legally.
I've talked about a 4e inspired game with my friends quite a few times, taking the good ideas the system had and building on them, perhaps even getting rid of some of the D&D legacy mechanics which didn't really fit with the new direction it was taking. I think it could be really cool.
>>43771733
People have been using the technicality that 3.5 and 5e are using the same nomenclature to release supplements/adventures/etc. for 5e, tho I'm not sure how well thats going to hold up in court.
Anyway, take a look at Strike!, it has most of the elements I like from 4e.
>>43771733
Older editions of D&D aren't under the OGL, yet we have compatible retroclones. I think the OGL cleared up some of the grey areas, since it said you can definitely create your own game with "ability scores", "attack rolls", "armor class", etc.
I suppose we wouldn't have beholders or mind flayers, but I'm wondering if there are any more snags with 4E. Perhaps some power names, maybe a few of the races.

Judging by your post number, sell your soul to satan in exchange for that powerful ability
"People from Earth exploring a fantasy world" is a trite by this point.
How would you run a campaign about magical people from a high-magic fantasy world making forays into our own modern world?
This would begin with establishing the fantasy world first and just how different it is from Earth. It would advance towards hearing wild rumors and investigating small planar breaches from Earth, then progress into exploring small towns of our world, then finally the big cities of glass and steel.
I imagine that it would be a more diplomatic and investigative campaign than a combat-based one.
How you would you present an atmosphere of wonder and "a different from of marvelous magic"? There are many things we take for granted in our world that would be outright mind-blowing even to someone from a high fantasy world.
For example, fantasy magic typically does not allow the average commoner to have in their palm an akashic library of all worldly knowledge and the ability to transmit sound and imagery across the world; that seems everyday to us, but think about how a fantasy wizard would view such a thing.
>>43771583
So you want to run an "Overlord at Work" campaign?
>>43772482
No.
>>43771583
I would go full 90s.
Players would be teleported to the real world, preferably downtown Los Angeles.
They will marvel at things like cars, payphones, televisions, and fast food.
They will be guided by a spunky teenager NPC, who constantly asks the players things like whether or not they have 7-11's where they're from.
Most of the adventure will take place either in a car or in a produc--I mean, NPC's house.
The main quest will probably involve something like the villain from the players' reality coming over and causing mayhem.
All the while I will play the greatest hits from the 90s.
How do you port furons over to 40k?
>>43771409
You dont. Why would you want to
>>43771409
Outcast Tau.
They were part of the same clan that became the etherials. There was disagreement on how to deal with the rest of the Tau infighting. The Furons left the planet while the etherials remained behind to spread their belief in the greater good.
Damn, that's actually a lot like the Romulan/Vulcan split in some ways.
>>43772932
Building up on that other anon they use their cloning to get around the Tau's short lifespan and numbers.

Can someone explain to me why there is so much emphasis on Space Marine Chapters being "1000 strong" and anyone who deviates is borderline heretic?
I mean yea sure it is better to have tiny chapters than big ass legions, but unless a chapter has gotten battle raped, I dont think it is possible to have 1000 guys consistently
the ultramarines chapter definitely uses more than 1000 space marines if the old "buy the ultramarines chapter" bundle is canon. So even the model chapter itself breaks the rule
>each company generally has 10 squads of 10 guys, so thats already 1000 space marines with all 10 companies
>and then theres the captain of each company
>and the command squad
>and the chaplain and librarian (if applicable)
>and then the dreadnoughts
>tons of tech marines and space marine drivers and pilots for the numerous vehicles
>finally theres the high command of honor guard, chapter master, and top tech marine, top chaplain, and top librarian
>theres bunches of prospective scouts probably not counted for
>space marines get KIA, MIA, get lost in warp, reappear from warp so their numbers flux
given all of these variables, I think most space marine chapters must average around 800-1200 marines.
>>43770796
It's pretty common historically to have military units where the official numbers are a lot fewer or more than the manpower they can actually deploy.
Medieval armies often counted by the number of knights, but since most knights brought three or more squires archers and serjeants as part of their lances those numbers are deceptively low. Some Classical armies like the Persian Immortals did the opposite and claimed a constant high number of men, regardless of how many they could actually field, in order to build up a reputation.
It's not unreasonable to think that a Space Marine chapter might be intentionally over- or undercounting to hit that magic number 1000.
Yes, 1000 is more of a guideline that an actual rule.
Yes, the ultramarines themselves have more than a thousand, they also effectively are at legion size because they can order a bunch of chapters around.
Yes, no one cares if you go over 1000, unless you really pissed someone off and don't have a strong enough political pull to cover your ass.
>>43770796
Well, we know that both the company size of 100 and the Chapter size of 1000 are both rough estimates generally on the lower side, and that there are wild exceptions on both sides of the scale to either figure.
We know that the 100 and 1000 figures refer chiefly to the men in Tactical, Assault, Devastator, Scout and Veteran Squads and generally don't include the leadership, Library, Reclusiam, Apothecarion, Forge, individuals promoted to Command Squads, crews for vehicles and so on. The average Chapter listed as ten companies of 100 is thus truthfully around 115-120 men per company and the Chapter 1200 men in total as a result of this.
Personally, I always thought 150 was a better number for a Space marine company. 10 basic squads of 10, a 10-strong leadership block and 40 men in support elements. Two companies devoted to Tactical, Assault and Devastator Purposes, a Scout company and Veteran Company, then the bodies of the Forge is 75 strong, the Apothecarion, Library and Reclusium are 50 strong, fleet crew 25 strong and the high leadership and ancients 50 strong. 1500 men total.
/v/ here.
I heard you guys play Warhammer 40k, right?
What can you tell me about the imperial guards?
I find them more interesting than gay space marines (mary sues) or the alien races.

This is like a horror movie – one of the really good ones, not just a dumb slasher flick. You can't bear to watch, but neither can you tear your eyes away. The tension in the room – just another room in your normally comfortable and familiar house – is unmistakable. It was certainly too much for Elliot, who fled the room at the earliest possible opportunity – although, now you think about it, that might have had more to do with the constant vile glares Leon kept shooting in his direction.
Your name is Mia Vespucci, and you're pretty sure that that was the reason.
It's all silent around the table, with Amelia, Cassandra and Leon somehow managing to stare each other down without ever looking directly at anyone. The gang's back together – that's what Cassandra murmured to you before the “discussion” began, and now you realise why she sounded so nervous. As you watched on, fascinated, Amelia laid out the basics of the situation in a terse, impatient voice. All the while she talked, Leon rapped his fingers against the polished wood of the table, the sound providing an insistent undertone to the deity's words. When Amelia finished speaking, Leon remained silent for a long time – even his fidgeting hand fell still. When it seems like the tension is getting unbearable, he speaks up.
>>43770447
“What's in it for me?” he says eventually, a slight smirk crossing his face.
“You...” Cassandra blurts out in surprise, “The world is in danger, don't you realise what's at stake here? If you don't help us, the world might be destroyed!”
“Aye,” Leon nods sagely, “And?”
“The world!” Amelia snaps, with such emphasis that time seems to stand still for a moment, “Is that not getting through to you? Honestly, I would have expected a little more humility from someone who got killed by a little girl...”
“Fuck you!” Leon shouts back, the smile dropping from his face in an instant, “I'll have a rematch with that wee shite, and I'll kick her fuckin' arse, just you watch!”
That... doesn't sound like anything to boast about, but you decide against mentioning that out loud. All you can do is watch this trainwreck unfold with a kind of fascination that borders on the masochistic. As your eyes flicker between each member of the group, Cassandra speaks up, this time in a placating tone.
“Leon,” she says with a visible effort to remain calm, “What, exactly, would it take to get you to help us?”
“Well, she's God, aye?” Leon smirks again, looking over at Amelia, “Go and magic up a stack of cash, that's a good startin' point!”
Scowling hard, Amelia slams her fist down onto the table – at least, she tries to. Her intangible fist passes straight through without making a sound. A moment later, Petra approaches and slams HER fist down onto the table, making all the cups bounce precariously. “Thank you,” Amelia mutters, before raising her voice, “Nobody is magicking up anything, understand? That's not how this works.”
>>43770452
“Are we talking about conjuring up some money?” Elliot asks suddenly, sticking his head around the door, “Because-” Before he can finish that sentence, a hand – Joseph's, you assume – grabs his collar and pulls him back out of the room. It's probably for the best, the situation is terse enough without Elliot stirring things up even more. The difficult silence returns as Elliot leaves, nobody quite willing to be the first to blink.
This could go on all day, but then what else are you supposed to do but watch? Leon, you quickly realise, is not stupid – he's just trying to exploit the situation as much as possible. Amelia can't – or won't – bend the rules to suit him, and Cassandra seems unwilling to put forwards any suggestions at all. How did these people ever manage to work together?
>Leon, you're nothing without us. Just a thug without a purpose
>If you want that rematch, you need us
>Keep silent
>Other
>>43770457
>Other
"You picked a fight with Alice too huh? I guess we have something in common."
>Leon, you're nothing without us. Just a thug without a purpose
With us though, you are of the few people that can summon and fight other demons. Hell of a lot more interesting no?"
Thought i'd get more response here as Sheev posting has killed /tv/
The Dark side is more powerful than than the Light.
All these guys were capable of fighting more than one Jedi at once and disposing of them.
Only Yoda was capable of taking on these guys one on one and he was several hundred years old.
Well, mind the "one master, one disciple" policy. It is what makes them strong...
But so few.
>>43770108
The Dark Side gives easier and quicker access to the same power and since it's also unrestricted, it's way easier to utilize. A Jedi could throw you around the room just as easily as that huge crate, but it's against their philosophy to use the Force to directly control a person's existence. Hence why they have work "around" and throw shit AT you, instead of throwing YOU.
Also, Vader was ridiculously powerful because he was the motherfucking CHOSEN ONE, and Sidious is quite likely the most powerful Sith that has ever existed. What he lacks in sheer power in comparison to Vader, he makes up with experience and knowledge. Sidious was really fucking powerful.

Today's question: What would you name your own saber ? Are they any canonical examples of named lightsabers ?

True ! For example, this one is probably the weapon of a duelist that tries to have everything under control. He won't fight unless he is sure he can win. Probably uses form II alongside other techniques

So, /tg/. Do your settings have any interesting burial rites? What's the faith/reasoning behind them? If there's a confirmed (absence of an) after-life, like the D&D Planes, do these rites have any actual effect?

Is this a reference to Chick Tracts?
>>43770001
As a matter of fact, Oglaf is now selling Sithrak Tracts.
>>43769984
I was just about to make this thread, though more about how you deal with the power of the gods and supplanting them. Fucking epic comic.
I don't know if it's really an interesting burial rite, but one of the customs universal to the cultures on the continent of Alcriora is singing about the life of the deceased at their funeral or funerals, if it's a group of them that died. Their accomplishments, their failures, their sins, their virtues, are woven into song by priests of the god of the dead, Ur-Kazak. It's believed that Ur paints records of the world upon the walls of his infinite cave, and that when you die you pass through his painted cave to... well, the ultimate fate differs depending on culture, species, and what aspect of Ur-Kazak is worshipped by the deceased. What actually happens though is that Ur-Kazak guides the souls of the dead through halls echoing with song, and they are taken to the soul forges to be born anew into the world. The song is fueled and maintained by his cave paintings, which are inspired by the songs sung by his priests for all soulful beings.
Dear /tg/, Present to me a plan how to kill a 40k unarmed and unarmored ork, with only medieval weapons avalible, discluding magic because thats fucking heretical

Stab it, slash it, puncture it, crush it. It's tough and strong, but not invulnerable. Just be sure to burn the remains to prevent spores.

I am a 3.5e fighter. I ubercharge the ork and it explodes into spore bits at the force of my damage. Then I leave the country and wait for it to be overrun by orks. Eventually I commit suicide because I'm a fighter.
