Depends on which general you want to use. Mizzix just look at some of the cheaper Melek lists and for Arjun I make more suggestions.

Here's the starting race screen. Points to note: I scavenged that flag from GIS and that is the standard human image.

Current rates are not terrible for everything except terraforming. There's obviously a long way to go.

The game automatically picked purple as the colour. Clearly this is Meant To Be.

Finally, if anyone wants a secondary naming scheme added in for commanders (like for example adding Britfag or Amerifats names) that's something we can do, as you can see at the bottom. Only applies to new commanders trained from this point on.

OP is running a game that is basically Dwarf fortress in space for mechanics. We play random people of the empire that get shit done, or die horribly because the engineers forgot to add life support systems to your ship.

You begin walking out of your room, clad in your new robes, their dull coloration accentuating the small triangular pin on your chest. The same unassuming man who brought you breakfast greets you with an almost sickeningly cordial smile, then begins walking while motioning for you to follow. He leads you through the hallways, framed by an azure glow, to a familiar door. He knocks four times on the door and opens it, revealing the same chamber you awoke in, albeit furnished as a small reading room. The man you assume is Dr. Di sits at a table, grinning in a way that makes you feel as if he can see through you like glass. You wish you were faking the nervous feeling gripping you.

"Please, take a seat Dr. Rock. Don't worry, I'm not going to question you. At least, not this time." He looks at you with an evaluating stare as you pull out a chair opposite him and sit. You can't help but notice two other chairs on either side of you.

"I am sorry for the... harsh treatment you were given by my compatriots. They were not made aware of certain... impressions, you made within only two days of employment at the Palace. Here's a little secret, you are the first person without military experience to be brought in to sit with the War Council. You are the only man to sit at that table, who isn't drilled into obedience of the King." You don't need to be a genius to see what he is getting at. Another door hidden in a dark corner of the room opens, and a man in a reflective mask walks in, carrying a short man who is bound and bloodied. He sets the man, the same one who knocked you out, in the chair to your right and sits at your left. You feel his gaze on you, but when you look at him, the only person staring back is Dr. Rock.

How do you typically build NPC hirelings for your party? Do you have a rolling list that you draw from? Build them as-needed? Create them to fill specific holes in party capabilities?

Hirelings I just use the NPCs in the monster manual. Important NPCs I stat out as monsters. If it's a temporary companion and it's appropriate I'll stat them out like a normal PC of their level.

You stare at the message from Babsy for a good solid few minutes before realizing you have to actually respond. You look around your modest room, realizing it screams "bachelor" with how messy and disorganized it is. Clothes and paperwork strewn about, the carpet, though not exactly fancy, is in dire need of vacuuming and it could certainly do with some air freshening. In short, it's a sty.

What about that premise do you want to focus on? What style of game are you imagining? A gritty, brutal world where death comes quickly? A high powered, over the top super robot sort of thing? Something in between? There's a lot of ways to do giant robots punching giant monsters.

I was thinking a literal martial arts setting, except instead of being individual people, they're pilots of giant robots/giant monsters. So a little bit of both. Over the top in that it's 300 foot tall metal men punching and kicking each other, but realistic in that there aren't megazord/transformers style crazy giant swords and lasers. Think Pacific Rim meets the Raid.

I've ran a game like that in Legends of the Wulin, but people on /tg/ have started to get annoyed at me for recommending it. I just love the system, and think it has the best mechanics for high action combat in any RPG, ever. The one shitty thing about it is the core book is awfully edited which makes actually learning to use it a real bitch, but once you get past that it's sublime.
