I didn't want to make my own thread, but I looked through the entire catalogue and didn't find any I felt I could drop my question(s) into. Basically I want to play rpgs but I never have before and need some advice.

Online options might be the easiest way to go, but I'm limited to a smartphone. How well are sites like roll20 going to work for me if I'm trying to play with other people from a smartphone?

If that won't work out, how can I find a group to play with in person? I don't have a group of friends I could rope into it, so I'd have to find strangers. Preferably strangers who play a lot, because once a week for 2 or 3 months isn't doable for me.

I want to have them play more of a role in campaigns and I wanted general opinions.

What would be some good trickery to do to PCs?
Any encounters with them that were particularly memorable?

>What would be some good trickery to do to PCs?

Let powerful fairies use hypnosis/suggestion spells to control NPCs and put them in hilarious situations.

E.g. super macho NPC suddenly gets in touch with his feminine side thanks to a fairy's magic suggestion and his low magic resistance.

Normally trustworthy goody-two-shoes NPC gets hypnotized and leads the party out into the woods after some treasure, they open up a chest to find nothing but bear dung. NPC is flustered and can't stop apologizing for what happened. Fairies giggle in the distance.

“King strong!” The goblin paladin Xamr says as you continue to spar with him. Hours have passed since Hestia locked herself and Director Snow into a bubble of highly accelerated time. From their perspective it must have been four months by now. You can see the swelling of pregnancy now on Hestia’s organic body. From what you can sense Director Snow has been quite forthcoming with Hestia and is telling her everything she wants to know. Hestia immediately reprograms the androids and robots to protect from the coming invasion from the administration.

You learn that the shadow infiltrators were a special unit created from the cooperation of the research and internal divisions. The success rate and compatibility of the process meant that only the two sent to spy on you could be created, at least that was what was reported. The flesh creature the goblins encounter in the city that was hunting down Evangeline Director Snow doesn’t know about, but since Evangeline is Director Burgess’ daughter such encounters should have occurred more often. Hestia is not happy that there were any infiltrations and you can feel her adjusting the city’s traps and sensors, making them even more powerful.

Hestia is determined to extract the most important information, so you also learn what Snow meant by proto-dragon. They claim to be the first life forms and recovered records indicate that dragons do in fact seem to have always existed, the proto-dragons are the oldest of their kind, with their extreme age their power is seemingly without measure, even deities take caution around them. Director Snow knew of exactly two, the current leader of the administration and what you refer to as the void prisoner. The third one that suddenly appeared, which is apparently you in cosmic dragon form, has thrown the administration into chaos during its brief appearance.

The fact that the void could be felt for a brief moment was the biggest problem for the administration, since the black stone prison was created specifically to seal the power of one of the proto-dragons. Director Snow seems happy that you’ve broken a hole into the void and that it is open enough for void conduits to form. She even goes on to suggest evacuating everyone and tearing it open more, she is adamant that the resulting apocalypse from the dragons fighting will be better than the ongoing treatment of the souls. The administration’s practice regarding souls is very much opposed by Director Snow, the reason she works in personnel is to circumvent the administration and reincarnate as many people as possible in the way that was done when the Indians were in control. Hestia tries to skirt around learning much about Director Snow since that information is irrelevant right now.

Unsurprisingly if you were taken in by the Hell Gate you would have gone to hell, this phenomenon is apparently very rare; there have been times when it doesn’t appear even for astoundingly evil people, you do learn that the man you encountered that time is named Taro Oishi. His location has been unknown since the research ring incident, but since no attempt to locate him has been made he is either dead or he is being kept somewhere. As for the internals, they are just heavily modified humans specialized in infiltration with the process to make them giving a predisposition to unusual psionic abilities.

While you are left out of the time dilation field and so excluded from Hestia’s interrogation of Director Snow, you come to know all this when Hestia shares her reports with you.

Completed Research

>Optimized worship methods – As Hestia explored your ability to gain immaterial power from your followers she was contacted by Aurora. Aurora told Hestia to change nearly everything without any explanation other than ‘it feels better this way’. Aurora has set the shaman’s up to be spiritual leaders for the population, and as taken it upon herself to guide worship of you and convert others. With Aurora’s interference you can now feel the stream of energy from your followers being solidified and more directed. The previous gentle nagging feeling that your followers wanted something has intensified and despite mostly ignoring it before now you can feel everything your followers are attributing to you. Overall this process has generate an additional 530,089 worship for you.

>Invitation magic – By combining her understanding of the hell invitations, the faerie tale books, and hyperspatial teleportation Hestia was able to create an improved version of the enchantments. For vastly less computation time and slightly more mana Hestia can create warp scrolls to any locations she knows of. This transfer must be done willingly; further study may enable lifting of this restriction.

>Boon – An inverse enchantment of bane, this grants a general increase in ability for a specific species allowing Hestia to custom tailor equipment for your growing armies, where the slight edge offered makes the largest possible impact.

>Spell weapons – Based on the lightning sword, Hestia has cataloged the effect and method of creating weaponry made from spells. Power word Annihilate is unable to be shaped into a weapon in this fashion as it destroys itself and everything nearby when the process is attempted. Hestia’s favorite spell to use to craft weapons is Discord, the unknown effects of the spell creates a never ending stream of novel data. She has created a sword for you, but warns it may be unwise to use near allies, new weapon acquired – Blade of Discord: (random effect generated when used, wielder protected from generated effects, ghost touch).

Ongoing research

Improved nazi enchantment
Magical empowerment locations
Twin study

Ongoing special projects

>Djinnistan modernization – At Ayla’s request Hestia is assisting in improving Djinnistan’s infrastructure. The three major cities under Ayla’s control will be upgraded fairly quickly, beyond that Hestia has no estimate as to how long this project will take. The speed of technological development is astonishing to the djinn who have always just used magic for everything, this disruption in the social order is increasing the acceptance of Ayla’s reforms in general. The scope of this project is delaying your research speed.

Important notes

>Administration activity – Despite the chaos inflicted by the confetti golems eventually a method of removing the golems was created and the administration troops are beginning their attack.

>Visitor – Director Burgess has once again dropped down into the pit to visit, while it appears that he came to see you he is currently with Evangeline.

Stage 106: How To, How Not To, and Pearls.

You're name is Ryuu Ryukusa, and you're on the horns of a dilemma.

Not literally, as you have no idea what a dilemma would actually look like, but you're definitely having issues at the moment. The problem is you have a sword, inside another sword, that needs to be taken out, but you can't do it by taking apart the hilt. Replacing things is one thing, but dismantling a kami would be dangerous, and not just for the kami in question.

Wakaba must have known the sword she was carrying was more than it seemed, and you suspect that if she had fought Hebiki Akari she would have used that secret weapon on her rather than on you. The name of the weapon is ominous enough to suggest that Stone dragonettes should fear it: Gendai-no-Muteki-no-Buki, Invincible Weapon of the Present Age. That says something about it's nature as well – it's a young weapon, though old enough to be a kami. The damaged blade that concealed it was also a kami, but that was possibly due to having traveled with you through a Hell. The middle of the blade is broken open, exposing the dull brown metal hidden within. But it's a small opening, and doesn't give you much to work with.

At the moment, a little more than half of your current group are performing a series of dances and offerings and ceremonies to invoke the blessings of Ryujin-Owatatsumi on the behalf of the Ama, the pearl divers of Mikimoto Pearl Island. The heavy drumbeats that fill the courtyard are audible even tucked away within the temple as the remainder of your family (and yourself) are. Akari is sleeping peacefully, her body mending well on it's own now, while Yuuhi is watching you curiously, her bright eyes glittering in reflected sunlight and dozens upon dozens of incense sticks.

The same dragonne that injured Akari damaged the outer shell of the sword you are currently studying as it lays across your lap, and while the Stone dragonne is dead, he has certainly left his marks in the world. Distracting him as Akari set him up for a killing blow worked wonders, but the lasting impressions upon Akari and the sword are a great deal less wonderful, especially since you have to get the rest of the metal off without damaging the interior blade.

Which leaves you right where you started – nowhere.

[] Yuuhi owns a nodachi; ask her advice.
[] Consult the weapon herself; she might have an opinion.
[] See if you can use your sapphire claws to flake the outer part away.
[] Maybe try Stone Eyes and see if there is a weakness.
[] Contact a weapon-smith; it might be roundabout, but you know one or two.

Hey /tg/, I've been working on a tabletop system & setting and recently I've felt a lull in progress because my casting system needs work. I've thought of a new system but it needs aid in making it easy to read for new players; here's the jyst of it:

>15 or so "Spell Seeds" (Fire, Mind, Holy, etc) and associated "Rituals"
>Each Spell Seed gives 1 passive ability and 2 spells to cast. This is the easy part, pick a seed and get your 3 abilities.
>You can learn a new Spell Seed by purchasing all 3 of its abilities over time.
>Some Spell Seeds have higher levels (Ice 2, Ice 3) to give more powerful basic spells and rituals.
>Rituals can be used by knowing the right Spell Seeds. Example, Matter 1 and Fire 1 can be combined to enchant your weapon with fire.

My problem here is that I don't know how to properly display the Rituals in a way that's easy for new players to understand which Rituals they have. Any suggestions on how to present them clearly, or any suggestions on better casting systems?

Why organize them into seeds if you have to buy the abilities one at a time? Aside from thematic reasons, I guess.

Also, what's the incentive to learn all of a seed and not just its most useful attributes?

So I am going to be attempting to DM a D&D 3.5 campaign in a middle fantasy epic sort of heavy metal world. The ten main subgenres I intend to incorperate are Black, Death, Doom, Classic Heavy, Thrash, Glam, Folk, Power, Death/Metalcore, and Nu and each of these has their own sort of City State as well as "Paragon" that is a sort of living effigy of the genre. One of the themes I'll be attempting to tie in is that of Diablo II. Specifically, one of my players will be undercover as a humanoid Mephisto leading others to achive his goals in this world. One of the ideas I had was for these "paragons" to be guarding shards of the Soulstones Mephisto wants to use to give himself his demonic power as well as to raise his two brothers from Hell. I am having trouble comming up with paragons for a few of the genres and would like some advice. I want the CR of these paragons to be anywhere from 16-20/22ish. These are the ones I've come up with and would like some help with these. These are what I have so far and would appreciate any advice you guys have. Also for Nu and "Core" I would prefer the CR to be closer to 16/18 or so to make some a few easier on these guys.
Black Metal: Black Wyrm Dragon Zombie
Death Metal: "Soul Edge" esque axe that the gem shard is embedded into causing the weilder to go insane and ragey while weilding it until the gem can be removed.
Thrash Metal: Longbow-64 Autonomous Attack Chopper & Hellvore-25 Autonomous Tank at the same time. Was also thinking of slightly buffing these mainly giving the tank a missle as well as it's normal machine gun.
Heavy Metal: Ronnie James Dio (Will not be fighting him)
Folk Metal: Some sort of aquatic Leviathan
Power Metal: A 13 headed Hydra modded up to CR 19/20.
Glam Metal: ?
Nu Metal: ?
Doom Metal: Something that makes them hurt themselves as opposed to it attacking them itself. No idea what though.
"Core": Was thinking something berzerkerish like some sort of glass cannon.

Rough wood forms gnarled ridges against your fingertips as you let them wander across the bark of the ancient tree. Through the growth of countless years you can still see the faintest sign of scars and gashes, wounds lavished upon the vast tree. The air around you is perfectly still, with the reverent air of a sacred place. In a way, that's exactly the kind of mood you'd expect this place, nestled not so far from the fairy kingdom's palace, but not for the same reason that the fairies themselves feel. No, this place, with the ancient and battle-scarred tree, is important to you for your own reasons.

Your name is Eirin Petra Petrushka, and this is a special place for you. Closing your eyes, you think back to the hazy memories of the time you spent with her and smile. This is a perfect moment, one that you wish would remain unbroken. Still, you know that it cannot be.

“Bloody hell!” Elliot mutters aloud as he catches up with you, his voice breaking you out of your pleasant recollections, “That's the biggest tree I've ever seen, and I've seen some... Hey Red, you're not looking your usual charming self. Something on your mind?”

No, you snap as you turn away from the tree, pushing past him and marching off towards the palace. Nothing wrong, and nothing on your mind. You've got work to do here.

That's why you came here, to the fairy kingdom, in the first place. To do your research, to make your plans – anything, really, as long as you're making yourself useful. Mia and Cassandra are doing their bit, as are Joseph and the new guy. That leave you to take Elliot out and see what you can learn here – at least here, in the fairy kingdom, the fop won't be able to spend any more of someone else's money. That's one thing demons have over humans – who ever heard of a demon working up a debt over something stupid?

With Elliot trailing behind you, you make a path straight for the archives. A few pixies pass you by, but none of them try to stop you – if anything, they hastily get out of your way, fluttering away down the corridor like startled birds. Nobody bars your path as you descend down the stairs to the archive, letting out a low sigh as you see the vast shelves, heavy with the weight of countless books. A dozen scholars could lose their lives here, all without making a dent in the sum total of the gathered knowledge. Assuming it is knowledge stored here and not cookbooks and fanfiction, or other such rubbish.

“Well!” Elliot says lightly as he takes in the sight before him, “With trees like that one outside, I'm not surprised they have so many books!”

Grunting something that comes close to a reply, you stride off down the rows of books. You remember... getting lost here. Lost in a maze of endlessly looping corridors while Amelia screamed for your help. An illusion, of course, but one that haunted your dreams for the remainder of the time you spent in that world. That bastard angel – and he never even got his comeuppance...

You're still wandering aimlessly – are you supposed to, what, just pick a random book and start reading? - when you hear a quiet sound, the rustle of paper. Maybe someone to help you – or, even better, someone who can just give you the information you need! You're not an idiot or some kind of illiterate fool, but you'd be perfectly fine with skipping the book learning just this once. Time is of the essence, and the world is at risk.

Or so Amelia claims.

Shaking your head, your long braid slapping lightly against a stack of leather bound books, you turn into the next row and follow the sound of pages turning. A few paces more and you see the culprit. You... know her. You recognise her blank, masked face and the sweeping cloak she wears – and she wears not much else. Scathach, the wish old witch who once saved your sight with an act of esoteric surgery. You wondered if you'd ever see her again.

“Well now,” the female demon says with slow curiosity, “I wondered if I'd ever see you again.”

That was a thing she did sometimes, you recall, plucking the words right out of your mind. You never learned if it was some kind of magic, or if she was just supremely skilled at reading people. There might not even be a difference between the two...

“Now,” Scathach – she hovers at her desk, rather than sitting – purrs, “It's rare to see a human in the Hall of the Scholar-King. What can I do for you?”

In 3rd edition D&D (and by extension Pathfinder), was the inclusion of "touch AC" a mistake?

Touch/Flatfooted AC added a sensible new layer to combat that made certain abilities range from not much better than an ordinary ability to extremely useful, depending on the opponent.

Anything that encourages players to analyze their opponents is good in my book, and using touch attacks on slow enemies and avoiding using them on fast ones makes sense.

The issue is that there were few non-spell touch attacks available to players, and there were a few of them with fairly wonky math.

Overall, it's a good design direction, but not one without its flaws.

>adding an additional defense that was a joke to hit, but it was ok as long as only Wizard could target it

So, recent BL publications pretty much confirm that Sanguinius was corrupted by chaos and was basically a ticking time bomb. Who do you think they'll ruin next?

Burning Wheel can do low-powered Warhammer Fantasy pretty well.
