Been looking into tabletop games and I have some starter questions.
Where do I find a community.
What kind of games should I start at?
Simple beginner questions thread.
>>43816832
Mechanically simple games. If you want a simple starter fantasy game try DnD 5e. The rules for pretty much everything have been simplified.
Modern game systems - try World of Darkness. The dice pool system can be easily adapted for use in any modern setting, supernatural horror or not.
>Where do I find a community?
At a local gamestore or online forums/roll20.
What kind of games should I start at?
You could go D&D of any edition, I like 5e and 4e. GURPs can do gritty action (any anything really but I use it for action.) I also like All Flesh Must Be Eaten (Zombies.), Mouseguard RPG (mice), and Riddle of Steel.

>Where do I find a community.
Assuming you don't want to learn to game with your friends (which is what I did), you could try your local game store, which may have games that are run there, or at least "want adds" for games seeking players and so forth. Also, you try online. Though I don't remember having seen one in a while, there are periodic game finder threads on /tg/, or you could try over at roll20. I have, however, heard that folks you meet online tend to be flakier than ones you meet in meatspace, which makes sense.
>What kind of games should I start at?
If you're trying to join some kind of community, you're pretty much at the mercy of popular opinion. You need a game that's popular enough that you can actually find people playing it. D&D 5e (the current version) is probably your best bet here. A shitload of people are playing it, and it's a lot more noob friendly than the other iterations of D&D that have large followings. Stay the fuck away from 3.5e D&D and Pathfinder.
If you're forming your own group, you have a lot more latitude, and can go with something that's significantly better as a beginner game than the currently-popular editions of D&D (though you're obviously sacrificing the advantage of having experienced folks around you who can help guide you through the process). Barbarians of Lemuria is great for a full-length but still very minimalist and easy to learn / run game. There are also mini-games out there like Risus, which are only a few pages and so take practically no effort to absorb, but for obvious reasons these tend to be a bit limited (and often a bit silly) in the long run... though that doesn't make them bad places to start.
Hey /tg/. Might have seen my old game here floating around the board since last year (or not). Wanted to drop by and say that after a year of hiatus, I've updated the core game to include more content from the Fire Emblem series, including the shifting races of the Laguz and the Manaketes, and the Support system. It's also received a little cosmetic overhaul, going from bland to plastered in art from the series.
For those who don't know, Fire Emblem: The Tides of War is a system meant to recreate the Fire Emblem series in its entirety while balancing everything for campaigns and skirmishes.
I had to compress the pdf so 4chan would accept it but if you want the core rulebook in better quality you can head to the wordpress site on the second page which is where I'll be hosting this game indefinitely
Hope you guys like it

I have not seen this before, so going through from the start. Feel free to ignore any suggestions, because god damn on the whole this is actually pretty well adapted.
Bride in the ToC is not italicised, same with Great Knight
Archer seems more underpowered than any other class, which, while true to the game, is kinda unfair, maybe remove the -2def penalty? Sniper doesnt make up for it's early stages at all.
>funny hat not required
>not
boo you whore
Maybe limit the amount of lords/strategists in the party? They are seriously versatile, and an army of Hectors is too ridiculous to contemplate
Pirate being slow is kinda meh. maybe swap the speed penalty to a defense penalty?
Maybe swap the Soldier penalty to a -1? thats just punishing to the poor nameless rank and file. Either that or further bonuses to the Halberdier
General deserves a bigger buff to defense, that armour is always bonkers. They should be expecting to hit the cap by level 10
Ok, going on to manaketes now
How would bike-riding speed scale as stats (in whatever system) went beyond human maximum? would it scale with strength? dex?
also bike cavalry should totally be a thing in post-apoc games, but that's kind of an aside
It could scale for either on bikes with the right gears.
Bike cavalry wouldn't really work (a bike makes a lousy platform to try and fight from), but bike DRAGOONS (in the original sense of "ride their mounts to get from point a to point b, dismount to fight") would be amazing.
>>43816129

Scales with runspeed, maximum distance scales with Con.

Hi /tg/
So recently a friend wanted me to teach her to play MtG.What I need help with is figuring out a nice format/type of deck so I don't utterly shoo her out of the game with my lame tier-2 scrub crusher decks.
tl;dr:Tips&tricks to teaching MtG to a not-brainless person
Well she is a woman, so try to go as easy mode as possible.
Try to make you and her decks from those shitty cards u throw away after a draft or from packs you buy, as to even the playing field so she can't call shit OP, cause there literally garbage commons.
Also always let her go first, and free mullies, forever, I mean, she is a girl, she'll need them.
Give her a handicap as well, start with 10 life, and you cant play spells for the first 3 turns.
Best advice I can give, after all...
Start with a mix of creature and burn spells. Red Deck Wins They are an easy to teach the game.
>>43815737
it's sexist if you go easy on her
it's also extremely sexist if you beat her at the game
i think it might be best to just segregate yourself, desu senpai
I'm designing an order of paladins derived fromfarmersthat were forced to fight enemies while working the fields for food.
I'm thinking of giving these paladins an assortment of weapons derived from farming tools, like scythes or sickles, but I dunno what weapon could be akin to a hoe or a shovel. Ideas?
>>43815612
A spear?
There's also a weapon literally called a spade out there, Dual purpose gravedigging tool and grave prevention device.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monk%27s_spade
A shovel by itself is actually a very good weapon. Able to inflict blunt or slicing damage depending on how its weilded, and after everything's done you can use it to cut up the body and bury it,

This. Both counts.
Well? At what age did you grew out of Magic?
16, after Lorwyn block. It wasn't a bad set, but the game just didn't have the same appeal- it was too much of a money sink, and I started getting into girls and booze instead.

This is a bad bait/troll thread...and you're posting in it. Get it together friend,
I've been running Shadowrun off and on for the last year but I've come to terms with the fact that I'm not really into the decking aspect.
I'm thinking of starting a new game in a new system, but I've got a lot of systems I'd like to try out and was wondering how other people choose the next system they'll play/run.
Bonus: Are there any decent modern fantasy systems out there? d20 modern holds no interest for me, and I hear Dresden Files is terribly unbalanced.
inb4 "just pick one, faggot"
It really comes down to just reading through a bunch of rulebooks that have some sort of connection to something you find interesting.
Feeling like a bit of a star wars binge? Give those new fantasy flight books a flick.
Been watching true detective lately and got a hankering for that. Take a glance at Call of Cthulhu.
It comes down to browsing
>>43814458
I know you're probably sick of this, but GURPS seems to do modern fantasy fairly well.
I feel like a right shithead saying this, but have you considered GURPS?
It's not perfect; it's hard to make a relevant character first time, some of the splats are pointlessly complicated, it's hard to find what you precisely need in the mountain of available material, the 'generic' aspect is sometimes very generic, and if your players are slow in the head they will find it difficult to add 3d6 together and apply a modifier.
However, you've been playing Shadowrun, so your players are used to dealing with fairly large amounts of dice.
The GURPS modern fantasy stuff tends towards (in my experience) more tactical shooty in an extremely dangerous world but I think you can add heroic rules to make it more pulpy.
I don't know much about WoD but that might also have similar settings and rules to what you seem to like playing. I think it's a bit more rules-lite and more focused on social gaming, but honestly I don't know much. The only people I know who play WoD are obese aspergic lunatics and this one beanpole 6'10" scrawny-ass scarecrow motherfucker, I don't play.
I love Call of Cthulhu, and Delta Green just got a big ol' kickstarter for new books, and I run those or adaptations of those fairly often. However I tend towards little to no overt fantasy stuff at all in my Delta Green because I had a bad time running a slightly more exuberant style of game.

Not much else could describe the state of the universe. Centuries have passed since the last Galactic war, and the result was simply a void of chaos. Individual Planet-States rose and fell daily, regimes took power and lost it, entire civilizations were lost without so much as a glance to their downfall. No great power holds the sectors together, Hutt Cartels rule the space lanes, and ‘war’ is no longer regarded as anything but daily life to the lower classes.

You are Tylus Adriaanse. A force sensitive human from the Outer-Rim planet of Drascent – A militaristic Hutt planet that gains its fortunes from the scavenging of deserted planets: Making you quite valuable to Doja Bogga Grella, reigning patriarch, as your nascent recognition of the force allows you to recognize force-imbued relics, often some of the most valuable treasures.
In exchange for relative freedom from the usual slavery the huts place upon your kind, you’ve been conscripted into the Treasury Expedition Force, composed of 20 soldiers of various races with you at the commanding helm.

“Approximately 5 minutes until we impact the surface of Moraband. Ready your gear.” The Ship’s AI cut to static. Running a hand over your helm, a simple black ceramic wrap with an in-built air filter, you contemplate the sight before you. Moraband was little more than a bright red wasteland, dotted by mountains and expansive calderas, pitch black rocks and crimson sand abundant. As the ship neared the surface, claxons screamed as the target was found – massive worn monoliths nestled in a valley between two massive mountain ranges – The fabled Valley of the Si’Tan.

The light thud of the ship’s landing knocked you out of your thoughts, your subordinates scrambled to get organized as the cargo bay opens, streaming out in 4 lines of 5 the soldiers jog out, you following behind with an ominous knot in your gut. Before you is a seemingly endless line of ruined stone edifices, designs apparently etched into their surfaces but worn to the point of being indecipherable.
But what truly peaked your interests are the three monoliths the ship originally located, previously unregistered tombs. The three stood in a triangular formation, each on standing at a slight angle as to look over the valley. Behind each rose ornate entrances into the mountains, large steps leading to the sealed entrances, with the exception of one whos doors seemed to have cracked open along one side.

I was reading about One Roll Engine, and thought of something that may have already been tried but I don't know anything.
If the numbers represent where an attack strikes, then it would be reasonable to have defense in the form offsetting die rolls. Like a defense of 3 lets you alter the outcomes of 3 dice by 1 each. Additionally, parts of the body could have different widths required to inflict damage, so you can move the rolls around to "block" with those parts.
The concern there though is turning every attack into a puzzle. The defender has to figure out where to change the rolls so that they will result in the worse results for the attacker. You'd likely need to switch down to d6 instead of d10 for this, because having multiple numbers on one body part messes up the dynamics.
>>43813887
The one roll engine works with any die type in theory you just got to watch the number of dice you're rolling.
One Roll Engine assumes you'll never roll more then ten dice at any given time as you'll have to roll doubles.
Having multiple numbers per body part is intentional. You're more like to hit some parts over others
>>43814004
I forgot to clarify something. In this d6 version, the difficulty of a head shot would instead be represented by an increased width threshold for the head, instead of it having half the amount of numbers on the dice as the other body parts. Breaking up a 5 pair by turning one of them into a 6, as long as there were no other 6s in the pool, would be like ducking under an attack.
>>43814188
hmmm… sorry i can't work out the concept your suggesting here.
basically you can drop dies right?
Sci-fi? In MY medieval fantasy? Anyone ever experience this in their games? Or have art of this holy/unholy (depends on your viewpoint I guess) mix of genres?
>medieval fantasy
I hope this term fucking dies.
Also it's been a thing since like for fucking ever to have "Sci-Fi" in fantasy.
I found a red Dragon Legendary (The not-so-good one) in my local store's rare box today.
I've decided to make a mono-red dragon artifact commander deck.
This is my first commander deck.
This is my first mono-red deck.
Wish me luck, guys.
>>43813767
If you are playing mono red, don't take the deck or the games to seriously. You are going to lose.
A lot.
>>43813852
That's okay. Dragons are sick-awesome.
I'll run dumb stuff like possibility storm in there too, most likely.
It certainly won't be a deck built for winning, more a deck to experience and enjoy playing.
