The Start of a New World.jpg

Five years ago, the world was changed for you forever in a flash of blue radiance. This strange event bestowed wondrous powers on you and many others. Even if there were ones before, this new generation of heroes and villains was unprecedented in size. Your powers almost netted you enough money to pull you out of poverty, but you just couldn't bring yourself to steal. Your job already lost, you soon lost your apartment, leaving you on the street.

Three years ago, the same blue light shined worldwide in an event known as "The Pow Boom". If you were still a writer for a newspaper, you would have slapped the guy who came up with that name. Unfortunately it stuck. Governments changed, the International Heroes Union collapsed as law enforcement were also affected by the surge in Supers. Ten percent of the population had just gained powers for better or worse, and the US has been working on legislation. The newest is an anonymous, voluntary catalog of powers, but Congress hasn't agreed on Supers for years.

Through all this, you continued to help others as a vigilante, saving people as you found them and stopping muggers. One guy even gave you a used car a few months ago because you saved him from a fire. The surge in people doing the same means you have no name yet, but those you saved simply call you the angel in the shadows. Not exactly catchy, but flattering all the same. You are Raphael Gaus, and the year is 2023.

You wake up to a trashcan falling over down the alley you're parked in and a scream from the same direction. Immediately you recognize the silhouette of a man holding a knife, and he seems to be threatening somebody you can't make out. This might be a chance to try out your new costume, so you slip the robe from your backpack over your clothes and put on the mask. With a click, the mask switches to thermal vision and you can see the victims, an old couple, and the purse that one of them has.

Experience with others wearing it has taught you that knives won't pierce nanoarmor, so this guy couldn't possibly hurt you. Unless he's also a Super that is. Which case he could shoot you with his mind or something like that, but he can't be a high rank otherwise he would be doing more nefarious stuff. He doesn't look like an experienced mugger either.

The old couple seem to be cowering behind a dumpster as the mugger holds them at knifepoint. There is one advantage to sleeping in alleys, your ink blends into the darkness perfectly.

>Summary: Year is 1983, Lord Voldemort was "killed" by the Boy Who Lived one year ago. You are John Apise, only child of a rich pureblood family, you started Hogwarts last year. You love potions, herbology and magical beasts. You played as the Seeker last year in the Ravenclaw Quidditch team but you couldn't win the Quidditch cup. Your house though won the House Cup, which is not a small feat. You stopped the half vampire DADA professor at the end of the year and saved your friends lives. You are now in your second year.

>Second Year so far: You went to Bordeaux with your dad and met with the new DADA professor there then you attended a Quidditch friendly match with your friend Tim but the match was disrupted by the attack of Death Eater remnants and you duelled with one of them briefly before he escaped, you started the second year in the Hogwarts and managed to get in the Quidditch team again as the Seeker, you are a member of the book club, duelling club and your friend Valdis' astronomy club.

>Last episode: You wrote a letter to your aunt, you showed Alba and Anya the secret Velvet Room and studied some potions with them there. You also witnessed a short arguement between Professor Snape and Professor Hevelius, when you discussed this with Anya, she said thought it was about the decisions Hevelius made when he was in the Wizengamot concerning the trials of suspected Death Eaters. After talking a while about how Professor Hevelius was the best Auror in his youth and how Snape just looks like hiding something (mostly coming from Alba) you three leave the Velvet Room.

The next day, Gryffindor plays against the Slytherin. The game starts quite fast with both sides scoring against each other. In fifteen minutes the score is 50 to 30 for Gryffindor with Alba scoring most of the goals. You can clearly see that she is a very skilled player. Probably the best on the field actually. The beater, who tried to hit you with a Bludger last year, Malus, is also playing. He tries to knock off Slytherin players with his usual dirty playstyle. You also see Rachel Rosenfeld, joined the team as a Chaser for Slytherin. The weather is cloudy with distant claps of thunder can be heard from the field.

As another half hour passes, the score is 120 for Gryffindor and 70 for the Slytherin. Gryffindor, especially Alba, plays very good...but the Slytherin has their secret weapon ready. The seeker who caught the Snitch last time you played against Slytherin even though they have lost the match. The fifth grader Picar Aquila, dives suddenly very fast towards the bottom of one of the keeps. You are sure that he saw the Snitch. The Gryffindor seeker is completely oblivious to this. Not too long later the whistle is heard. Slytherin wins the match with the score of 220 to 120. You are sure that Alba would be crazy but instead she looks calm and simply lands with her broom and heads to the changing rooms.

The Slytherin students cheer and shout chants. They are in complete frenzy. Some say they care more about defeating Gryffindor than winning the cup. You can certainly see some of them are like that. Then you catch the glimpse of the Professor Snape. He is standing between the cheering students. You are not sure because of the distance but it looks like he is smiling. He raises his hands and claps slowly. He is clearly happy with this victory.

The next day, Monday, you start the day with your common class with Gryffindor which is the Potions. Professor Snape seems to be in a better mood than his usual. He walks around the classroom explaining how to slice kidneys properly. He stops behind the desk of Bill Weasley and smacks his book on his head. "Since you think gossiping is more important than what I am telling, Mr. Weasley, you might as well tell us what is the difference between brewing a Forgetfulness Potion in a silver cauldron and a copper cauldron?"

Bill, looking completely terrorised, says "Umm...it tastes better with the copper?" Snape just sighs and declares, "10 points from Gryffindor. It is good to see the prestigious magical education of Hogwarts was chosen to be given to the likes of you..." and walks off to continue with the class.

You are requiered to prepare the ingredients first to brew a Shrinking Solution.

A little cliched, but the saddest I've ever made a character's backstory as I tend towards the more well adjusted in terms of characters.
>Half-elf, who are discriminated against in the DM's homebrew
>His mother was some higher up in the Elvish government, his dad was a adventurer of some description.
>Mom forced his dad to take the baby, he dumped it at an orphanage, orphanage didn't want it either and just left him in the street
>Imperial Library Keeper is out on a nighttime walk because he's a fucking weirdo and takes the baby
>Raised in the deep stacks of the library, abused by the library keeper and forced out of sight whenever someone is around
>Has zero outside contact besides the Library Keeper until he's about 12 when he discovers a "talking book"
>Talking book is actually the contact point for some sort of Outer Being/Elder God, becomes a warlock by accident by being in contact with it
>Elder God is an okay guy actually, but Library Keeper is still an abusive asshole and regularly beats the kid
>At age 19 a group of looters break into the library looking for shit to steal during big riots outside (this actually factors into another characters backstory)
>End up killing the Library Keeper in a scuffle
>Kid is pissed, blasts them with eldritch magic
>More people show up after sounds of a scuffle, kids hands are basically still "smoking"
>Assume he did it, as he's some kind of rogue elf wizard they've never seen before and there are five dead humans at his feet
>Chase him out of town, but not before he grabs the book
>Becomes adventurer/mage for hire because he has nothing else he knows besides what he's read about and polite circles want nothing to do with half-elves

It's all panned out alright for him in the long term though. So that's good.

The Western (and Japanese) influence and colonization of China that lasted till the end of World War II. Off the tip of my head, I guess I'd say Geist could work, because Geist works best when there's cultural tensions going on since they're all about fusions and cultural blending. Demon could work too, as would Vampire and maybe even Beast.

Am I the only one who is bothered by how most DnD settings (meaning: the large official ones, like FR, Greyhawk, etc) get the idea of polytheism wrong?

I mean, characters seem to chose a deity, and follow that one and only that one. And even though the information is mostly vague, it seems that even common folk tend to worship only one chosen deity.

Where does this come from? Is it ingrained in the developers and writers because of the Christian mindset? Or is it because of the alignment system? I mean:

>you can't pray to the god of death when your loved one dies cause he is a different alignment and you worship the goddess of agriculture anyway, cause you're a peasant

What do you guys think? How do you handle polytheism in your games?

>I mean, characters seem to chose a deity, and follow that one and only that one. And even though the information is mostly vague, it seems that even common folk tend to worship only one chosen deity.

That's not the case in most D&D settings.

Players choose patron deities, but they still worship the rest when appropriate. A fighter who hates undead and worships Pelor still offers Fharlanghn a prayer before he sets out on a journey, and a wizard that considers Mystra to be her patron still praises Tymora when she wins a game of cards. Even clerics dedicated to a single god respect the rest, as long as their church's dogma don't come into conflict.

This is explicitly stated in the rules books.
>>
>>44837909
But that makes little sense(with the exception of clerics and monks), as the gods are extremely thematic. Henotheism was an early form of monotheism, where the worshipped gods gave a lot broader portfolio, so to speak.

>Last time, on Digimang Quest.

Waking up in transit, our heroes immediately broke themselves free, finding themselves having to square off with a not so chivalrous knight. Having looted him, they find a mysterious coded ring on a necklace, as well as some unreadable bank transactions.

Swiftly moving on, our heroes arrived at their destination; Coded Village, wherein, they met a witch lady with giant hands and Dash once again tried to a spider.

Finally, trying to save his teacher from a nightmare, Dash got his business thoroughly ruined, when she panicked and blasted him into a wall with magic, but he was swiftly healed thanks to lol magic, before the group concedes they should try and find the other human children before attempting to find a way home.

Now, on with the Adventure!

You wake early, something gooey and warm dropping itself heavily into your lap. You startle awake, staring down at the blackish blob thing now sitting on your knees, little yellow eyes peering up at you.

“Bo-bo!” It squeaks, bouncing a few times, before leaping out through the window, hurrying off through the grass towards another series of blobs.

Seems the baby Digimon are entertaining themselves, even if it’s at the expense of your sleep schedule. And, of course, Jeff’s snoring up a storm in the front seat, and even after a solid half hour of trying to curl yourself up as comfortably as possible, you can’t get any sleep with that going on.

The sun’s just peaking over the horizon, as you slip out of the car, clambering a short way up a tree, you manage to rustle around blindly in the leaves for some food, fingers closing around something, you tug it off the branch, coming away with… a steak? How?

Oh well, you’re not complaining. You drop to the ground, angrily ripping into the meat, before even forcing yourself through a morning exercise routine, collapsing in a sweaty heap in the grass as you finish up, breath ragged.

You can hear more of the baby Digimon giggling among themselves nearby, laughing about something or other, when lights flick on in the two houses owned by Miss Kelli and Witchmon. Seems both are awake for now.

Welcome to Academy City. The time is morning, the weather is hazy, and the date is February 5.

You were Kyril Torikov, Level 3 telekinetic ‘business owner’ and you probably were feeling the effects of a hangover. A night on a couch after getting rip roaring drunk was the cause. Around you, several bottles of alcohol were strewn about. You remembered that the punch had run out rather quickly. Your drinking companions were still dead to the world. Touma laid sprawled out on the armchair opposite. The next chair held the Accelerator, dozing off yet still as a statue. Sagara had borrowed your desk. All in all you were probably the only one with a relatively comfortable bed. It would explain how you woke up first. It took a while for your mind to get itself in order.

First you remembered why you were drinking. It was more of a distraction, giving the august presence of the First Ranked Level 5 in the room. He had been brought low by the casual offer of a drink. Either it was a blind spot in his usually impenetrable defences or he knew what he was doing letting his guard down like that. Still it was good to know that there was something human in being to share a drink with him. Then you remembered why he was here in the first place. He had been in the company of a former classmate who had a crush on you. Fortunately, or not, for everyone involved, Asuka had whisked her away when you had rejected her confession. There was less drama after that, only drinking, complaining, and the telling of old stories that should have been left well enough alone. The things the Accelerator got up to was tragic but also horrifying in its own way.

There was a message from Nayuta asking for you to come in for a debriefing sometime today. It was the start of the work week after all, though you rarely did have the weekend off. First things first though you,

I don't know if I'd call it "done right" but I ripped off some Lovecraft dream stuff for my fantasy campaign.

Instead of D&D's astral plane, most teleportation and astral travel relies on the dream realm, a realm-between-realms where the dreams of conscious creatures take shape and form into bubbles. This means that astral travel is easier at night because more creatures are asleep -- it's like a navigator at sea having more stars in the sky.

What makes the dream realm unique is that there are a few "fixed" dreams that act as landmarks. Some of these have been identified as originating in the tombs of heroes or ancient slumbering dragons or old crypts, but most are unexplained. The greater the creature's intellect, the larger its dream bubble is, so these landmarks are reliable as navigation points.

The big one, though, is the Dreamer Below. This is an absolutely enormous and vast dream bubble with its source deep beneath the ground that looks the same no matter where your entry point is from the physical world. With certain magic, one can even enter dreams and see or influence the course of a dream. The Dreamer Below's dream is just as vast inside as outside, and travelers have become lost inside, never to return. Others report a bizarre landscape unlike anything they've ever seen, full of strange but benign creatures that defy explanation.

The important thing is to keep the characters in control. If what they do makes no difference it's not a game. That doesn't mean their guns have to have an effect, but if they run the situation changes, and where they run to has an effect on the outcome.

I don't think you can just replicate a successful game. A lot depends on the players and the right mood.

My favorite session was A Cold War. But be warned, this one is definitely KEEPERS ONLY! If you read it you can never play it. And that would be a real shame. The setting is modern cultists. It's a one-shot and a bit of a sandbox. I wouldn't call it classically structured, and you can't use it to make your own because it is very specific.

Been thinking of a homebrew chapter idea to draw lately. What about a chapter based off Chinese army concepts? Guan Yu alone fulfills the badassery requirement for a Chapter Master. A war saint in China, he remained absolutely loyal to his monarch Liu Bei to the point of certain death, literally played chinese chess while surgery was performed on an arm, and died, refusing to surrender his loyalty to Liu Bei at the battle of fancheng.

"In the Western world, Guan Yu is sometimes called the Taoist God of War, probably because he is one of the most well-known military generals worshiped by the Chinese people. This is a misconception of his role, as, unlike the Greco-Roman deity Mars or the Norse god Týr, Guan Yu, as a god, does not necessarily bless those who go to battle but rather people who observe the code of brotherhood and righteousness."

What does /tg/ think? Rest of chapter can be based off Imperial China with melee cavalry (not that shitty barbarian motorbike gang) favoring flanking and melee skirmishes, relegating the use of firearms to scouts or Imperial Guard. As Imperial China paralleled medieval Knighthood a bit in this regard where heavily armored cavalry were regarded highly and conscripted peasants made the bulk of their infantry/siege-work/garrison.

Would greenstuff badass beards/10.

Given how fucking often "Fire Attacks!!!" appeared in Romance of the 3 Kindoms, you could model them after his classical green-and-gold with red trim and run them with Salamander chaptacs, especially given how bro-tier they are.

And fucking seriously, roll with a bazillion fu man chus on your helmetless dudes.
>>
>>44837016
For anything China-based, Guan Yu and Zhang Liao have to compete for conceptual space with Zhuge Liang and Cao Cao. And that's just in that era, and not at all inclusive. You could easily fill out a full eighteen legions from ancient Chinese concepts and not repeat yourself once.
>>
>>44837111
Yeah, I do love me some manly fucking beards popping out of power armor. Never even thought of the Salamanders.

Was originally going with Imperial Fists, but now that you mention it, Salamanders are pretty bro-tier, especially if I'm going for the most brotherly kingdom in the Three Kingdoms Period as a motif.

Imagine the troll doll head I'd have to de-attach to make Zhang Fei's wild beard lol. Really good idea.

Welcome to Rookstone.jpg

The carriage rattles as it bumps over stones in the dirt path winding up toward Rookstone Manor, your new home for the next several months. You have been invited to study at Rookstone, all expenses paid, including room and board. Your parents were bemused by the owner's invitation, but the opportunity for free private schooling seemed too rare and valuable to pass up and everything appeared above board.

Across from you sits Dr. Pendleton - not that kind of doctor, he assured you on meeting, but rather "just a chap with a bit too much schooling." You're not entirely sure what his job is, but it has something to do with the government inspecting or supervising or otherwise keeping tabs on the students.

Dr. Pendleton smiles at you as he passes over a form. "The governess asked me to have you fill this out, it's just a quick thing, if you wouldn't mind." You look over the questions - just normal stuff:

You write down your name, age (12) and gender and scribble down the other basic information required. Handing it back to Dr. Pendleton, you feel like you have to ask.

"Why are we taking a carriage up to the school?" You've been wondering for a while now. "Why not just take the car?"

"The owner of the property doesn't like motor vehicles on the estate," he replies with a chuckle. "I don't think she likes the noise very much. She's provided this carriage and driver for any business between Rookstone and the town."

You nod. Looking out the window, you can see how different life at Rookstone will be from the city - there aren't any houses around, let alone cars, just fields and the trees beyond.

"Ah, I do believe we're coming up to the statues. We should be there soon. Take a look!" the doctor beams. You watch as they come into view - first a stone statue of a child running, then a horse rearing up a few feet behind. "We're nearly there, then?"

As if to answer your questions, the hoofbeats begin to slow and you hear the driver calling "Whoa!" Before long, the carriage comes to a halt and the door opens. The carriageman, Roy, is a youngish fellow, no more than 20 you think, with mussed brown hair and a warm smile. He's got your bags in hand.

Stepping out of the carriage, you look up at a vast stone mansion, almost like a castle in size, far bigger than you had imagined it. A large double door is surrounded by tall curtained windows and at least three floors in the main section alone, to say nothing of the towers - there are towers! - on the ends of the building.

A huge, grumpy-looking man in a brown coat comes over to lead the horses away as Dr. Pendleton walks over. He hands you your papers and looks up at the building.

I want to know if they've started encountering these Faceless, and Chryssalids. Also, pass along to them info about the cloning facility in Portugal; it's in their interests too that better Advent Captains don't come online.

In the north lies the land of Mountains, peaks adorned by white dresses which never melt, only grow thicker with every passing year. In these mountains live the orcs, green-skinned nomads who challenge these harsh lands to sharpen their wits and strengthen their body. Beneath the orcs, deep down in the cores of the Mountains dwell the stout folk, dwarves. Relentless digging is both their glory and curse, as they reach new lows with each day. In the land set below lie hilly plains, grasslands surrounded by tall forests. This land is inhabited by all, but ruled by the human race. Further south is a never ending beach of dry sand that leeches your life-force with each step, here live the yet another short folk, the much more nimble halflings that treat this unforgiving land as their homeland. And lastly, to the west of this is a vast forest made up of colossal trees; trunks the size of menhirs and branches thick as a man. This, massive in both sheer size of territory and trees, forest is the homeland to the tall and slender Elves, whose seemingly blend in into the nature, as if they were one with it.

All of these lands are inhabited by one common thing; Monsters, beasts and wild monstrosities alike. They're hunted, venerated or kept as pets, beasts of burden or beasts of war. Each land having its own unique beast capable of ruining villages or even whole cities, and you are one such being.

You are a Great Beast, but which one?
