>How does the Lucky feat interact with advantage and disadvantage? The Lucky feat lets you spend a luck point; roll an extra d20 for an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw; and then choose which d20 to use. This is true no matter how many d20s are in the mix.

>For example, if you have disadvantage on your attack roll, you could spend a luck point, roll a third d20, and then decide which of the three dice to use. You still have disadvantage, since the feat doesn’t say it gets rid of it, but you do get to pick the die.

http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/sageadvice_feats/

Okay I get it. Lucky is suppose to portray how in main character always land that one in a million shot. Like how everyone else couldn't hit but Luke turned his targeting computer off (to give himself a disadvantage) and still made that shot by trusting the force.

But this super advantage thing still somehow feels wrong in a game in a counterfactual way when people are deliberately closing their eyes to attack with disadvantage to hope for a crit. Do you or your DM allow you to use Lucky and disadvantage in this way in your game?

Oh no.
That creates hot new meta.
Forcibly creating bad conditions for yourself actually help you with the Lucky feat.
>>
>>46348662
Not only that:

>You can choose to spend one o f your luck points after you roll the die, but before the outcome is determined.

So imagine this situation:

>DM: okay anon, you and the BBEG are on the edge of the cliff with the pool of lava underneath, you have your swords locked and you're trying to push each other off into the lava
>DM roll an Athletics roll of 17 for BBEG
>DM: okay roll your Athletic, now because the BBEG is a large creature you get disadvantage
>You roll a 20 and a 1!
>DM: too bad, you fall into....
>You: NOT SO FAST DM! I use my luck point!
>Roll a 3
>You: I choose to use the 20 result, you push the BBEG into the lava pool instead

This is one of the problems with narrative mechanics. Many of the stories they try to encourage only work because of the "mechanics" of the world. The point is that they're ~exceptional~. Giving them mechanical encouragement not only creates an odd dissonance where the way the game works is directly at odds with the world it's meant to represent,

For example, think of the trope where a heroic underdog defeats an overwhelmingly powerful foe. Giving the foe a hidden weakness that a clever hero/player can take advantage of is fine. But a "story-driven system" might try to encourage the story by giving the "underdog" so many bonuses that it's statistically unlikely for him to actually lose. He's not at a disadvantage anymore, so the trope doesn't even apply; the result is a story that superficially imitates what the game designers want, while actually being the opposite.

Has it ever come up in any campaigns you've been in? Was it done well? What advice would you give DM's attempting this in their campaigns?

It's good for over the top stuff and everyone going in is powergaming, including the DM. Only reason to still play it. Other than that it's pretty shit for vanilla flavor D&D.

It's good for non-casters too, if you're using Tome of Battle (ie if the DM isn't a retard).

Just about everyone still playing 3.5 these days allows it at least. Now psionics, on the other hand, still triggers DMs for some reason.

Hey /tg/ I come in search of advice. I'm thinking about running a supers campaign with my regular gaming group, but I'm not sure which system to use since all the reviews I've seen are fairly conflicting.

I'm probably going to have the power levels start out somewhere around movie Batman and end up somewhere around movie Avengers, though neither of those are set in stone, and I'd prefer something relatively crunchy.

Beyond that, the only thing set in stone is that it'll be a primarily nonlethal game (though it's easy enough to houserule in "game says you're dead = you're actually unconscious").

In the meantime, have some short descriptions (in no particular order) of NPCs I've thought up. Many of these are blatant references to characters from popular culture, and the game will have something of a silly tone.

The Bro: Hero; typical dudebro, though he's always there to help people out when they need it. Has some fairly generic super-enhancements (mildly increased strength, endurance, etc) that he can loan out to other people, plus has something along the lines of a D&D Paladin's Lay on Hands ability (touch someone and they feel better / their wounds aren't as bad now) that doesn't work on himself. Also has the ability to swap his location with that of one willing person instantaneously, though he typically holds this in reserve until it's needed to save someone's life by him taking an attack for them.

He'll likely have some kind of evil counterpart with the opposite of each of his powers (he powers himself up by taking strength/etc from others, he steals life from people with a touch, etc).

Name not yet determined: Villain; a somewhat pudgy guy who wears a yellow tracksuit and half-mask (the kind that only covers the top half of your face). He has some kind of extradimensional second stomach that can hold a huge volume of stuff without damaging or digesting it, and he can spit items back up later as needed (though this typically takes a moment). He can also eat an item (destroying it in the process) in order to gain some of it's properties (for example, eating a piece of metal makes him more durable temporarily), though these only last an hour or two and he can only have one active at a time. Scared of ghosts.

Headshot: Villain; fires powerful energy blasts from the top of his head. This obviously gives him problems aiming, though he has fairly significant practice with it that mitigates this somewhat.

Name not yet determined: Villain; has a magic sword and shield and a shitload of consumables (his favorites are grenades and small incendiary bombs).
>>
Name not yet determined: Non-combat character; looks basically like a succubus decided to dress up as a stern librarian. Works as a defense attorney with her encyclopedic knowledge of the law, and is famous for getting people off on technicalities. There are a lot of people who are completely convinced she's doing something illegal, they just don't know what and can't find any evidence.

Bat-man: Hero; basically just a dude with a bat and fairly minor enhancements to strength/endurance/etc. Dresses like an old timey baseball player.

Souperman: Hero; sprays soup at people. He can control the type and temperature, though he can't (or won't) spray types of soup at temperatures other than approximately what is standard for them (ie: no hot Gazpacho).

The Flash: Hero; can emit brief bursts of bright light (approximately a camera flash, though with the potential to make them brighter if need be).

Melvin: Villain; a bumbling alien with a tendency to monologue about his plans to conquer the Earth, looks like a black guy in strange armor.
>>
Names not yet determined: Villains; they have various remote-controlled robotic vehicles that they send in to banks or jewelry stores and the like and basically threaten to open fire unless someone puts valuables into an obvious compartment on one of the vehicles. They tend to use vehicles along the lines of APCs (but with more firepower, also they're amphibious) and aircraft along the lines of fighter jets but with the ability to hover. They have various hidden bases, but tend to show up in a submersible aircraft carrier from which they launch their remotely-controlled vehicles. They have a tendency to put too much time into choreographing their driving into and out of their heists (they want to look cool, you know).

Crisis Man (working name): Villain? Mercenary? A fairly ordinary (though highly skilled) guy with a military background who somehow found or invented some kind of super suit that can give him super strength, super speed, super durability, or near-invisibility, but only one at a time. Later on he'll probably upgrade the suit so he can have two at a time, then three, and so on. He'll probably have some kind of jetpack or something so he can fly places (though it's fairly bulky so he doesn't like to wear it in fights), and he tends to use guns as his primary method of attack.

Wraith (working name): Villain; a fairly young woman who works as a courier for other villains and criminal organizations. She primarily parkours her way across rooftops and the like, and has some enhanced strength and reflexes and the like to support this, as well as being invisible to digital cameras and the like (not sure if I want her to be visible to film-based cameras, but probably not).

Hello all, I'm looking to start my first army soon, and I've decided to go with Skitarii. I currently have pdfs of the Cult Mechanicus and Skitarii Codices, as well as the 7th edition rules.

Could I have some advice on how to not screw up building/putting together the models, as well as painting them, and general advice for being a new player?

Also, I see that the Start Collecting! Skitarii pack has a unique formation called the Dominus Maniple that lets you field all the units that cone with it, does anyone know how many points it is?

And for my final question, I'm torn between choosing between Metalica or Ryza for my paint scheme. I'm leaning towards Ryza, and would line to know what paints I should buy for them.

Oh, and one more question, what should I equip my units with, as I've heard that the Dominus Maniple is Vanguard only as well.

I'd like to believe that I have a basic understanding of the rules, but I'm sorry if I have a hard time understanding certain answers and questions, and thank you in advance.

Honestly, I think I might just stick to the Mars color scheme, as it's nice and simple enough for me, as well as there being a video on how to paint it.

the base for Dominus Maniple is 250pts. and with max points put in to upgrades, it's a around 650pts.

and yes it is vanguard only, but vanguard are much better than rangers, despite not looking as cool

I've been playing and DMing Dungeons & Dragons for a long time.

I have a personal preference for DnD 3.5 and ADND. Some of the best games I've ever had the pleasure of DMing have been in these editions.

I don't care to play 5th edition. I wasn't interested to learn the new rules and buy the new books. Anyone who plays the new rules please tell me what I'm missing.

Share your stories and ask me your questions,
if we get enough people maybe we could play a One Off Campaign together.

Stay a while, and listen.

Main advantage of 5e is that it works. Very little you have to house rule to enjoy a dungeon crawl, so you can just tell your players to show up with a PC or two and you'll be okay.

Wizards and Clerics are still strong AT HIGH LEVELS, but they NEED a party to reach them. New magic rule means they can't stack buffs.

Wish the Magic Fighter and Rogue got more love instead of just pulling stuff from the Wizard's you box.
>>
>>46341781

Yeah, I've found that I've had to institute a couple house rules for DnD 3.5 for very specific instances, such as when someone tried to use Iron Heart Surge in a weird way.

Clerics have always been super strong ever since the beginning... It's because they have the power of the Gods!
>>
>>46341694
It's just simpler. You can't stack too many spells.

Plus, you can throw a pile of orcs at a level 20 party and not Have to adjust the stats

Sup /tg/, I come to you in my time of need. I have just started a game for some friends of mine and we are half way threw their first dungeon.

Now this is were the request comes in. m players are all the clever sort of people. the kind that mounts focusing lenses and a shutter box on a Xbow frame and cast dancing lights on it to make a low tech las rifle. Now i don't really have any problems with this, as long as they can justify background wise why they know how to do that. what I am here for is some border line BS magical items I can give them to play with for "creative solutions". If any back ground info is needed I'd be happy to oblige, also I would be more than happy in future posts to story time the uses of purposed magical items. please and thank you.

Plates of Adhesion

These are bronze circular plates about 20 cm in diameter and carved with strange symbols, with a large spiral symbol in the center. Placing the plate against a surface and tapping the spiral symbol causes the plate to stick hard to that surface, requiring ten strong men to pull it off by brute force. Tapping the square a second time cancels the effect. These are reusable.

>Lamentations of the Flame Princess

That's kind of a snowflakey name. Does the quality of the game justify it?
>>
>>46337507
Well I haven't played it but what I understand so far is this:

It's an auteur game very much colored by the sensibilities of its creator who didn't like the way DnD modules relied on unconnected empty tropes. The name is his personal label apparently derived from a bad breakup, it is not a descriptive title but a lyrical one.

The idea is a fantasy world that doesn't present hollow concepts but that actively tries its best to grind the characters to a bloody pulp. If Tomb of Horrors is a baseline, LotFP is the Heavy Metal cartoon version. Visually it is exploitative to a fault. The art is violent, sexual, and offensive in the best way.

Structurally it comes out pretty close to CoC where players don't get to 'win' scenarios but the way they fail tells a story constructed around grim flavor and mysterious threats.

It's a DnD where goblins eating your family isn't shrugged off as backstory and wielding a cursed item is bound to screw over your entire party eventually, even if it may come with temporary advantages. It's so gritty that to be a hero you have to risk everything every day. TPK is the default. The players have to be careful and inventive to avoid it.
