If a dungeon opened up in the modern world, just sprung out of the ground in a vacant lot somewhere, what would you bring in to help in your adventuring?
Assume no cell reception inside, but that you have access to military equipment within reason. Anything that you can carry on your person; no harrier jets.

Welcome my brothers, to the tales of the Pathetic Marines, the Emperors Least Favored Sons! Hours ago on a thread much like this one, the Emperor called his weakest and most Pathetic sons to go on a crusade against the vile Archtraitor Horus! But as of now, we need more to be defined as truly Pathetic Marines!
(We need to establish more characters and organization to our band of misfit badasses.)

You are Sonia Reynard, Viscount of Rioja and its surrounding trade lanes, and protector of the Smuggler's Run. You control the fates of a dozen worlds in the so called Smuggler's Run. With your new position you are quickly becoming one of the most influential people in your House.
Your power isn't without limits. Barons Winifred and Archivald still command the South Reach and Home fleets respectively. While you doubt they could match the firepower your fleets can now bring to bear, there is a substantial population gap.
For now you still answer to Count Gernot Sigurd Jerik, and the more senior Barons when operating in their theaters.
From Rioja and the other House worlds in the Run you've built up your fleets and armies this past year. Both have seen their share of action with anti-piracy work, an invasion of Bonrah's local territory and raids into the next Nav Relay.
It is 4033 and as the Dominion slips deeper into civil war you and those under your command are taking stock after one of the largest battles seen in the DRH 1 navigation Relay in centuries. While a decisive victory for your ambushing forces your reserves are now depleted and it will take days at best to finish resupply and repairs.
Knight Captain Katherine Drake is your fleet's Wing Commander. She is busy commanding your more mobile assets. Along with Mike they're chasing down cloaked ships with a special detection array while also trying to combat enemy raiding units and harass their few fixed positions. They're stretched too thin but won't have to be for long you hope.
Knight Captain Kim Yu Chung led the minelayer units in the recent battle. They've exhausted most of their stockpiles and will need time to rebuild them. For now he plans to re-equip his cloaked battleships to carry their heavy torpedo launchers.
Uyi Rna is the General of your Army.
Wiremu Tama is the admiral of your Fleet.
Fadila Saqqaf is your leading diplomatic adviser.
C.F. Vanderwal is a former House Erid noble now serving with your intelligence division as part of his parole.
Chide Dlam'ard, the Governor of Rioja has been preparing Rioja for a potential siege.

Finished catching up on about two years worth of threads last night, my thoughts: Viola Davis plays Winifred in the movie adaptation. Foss is a better husbando than Darrow. You guys got played real hard when you recalled the raiding fleet a few weeks back. Considering slagging the two disabled Megas to show them we mean business.

I'm actually kinda surprised Death managed to come back so strong in the battle for the Living City. For a time it looked like they were BTFO, but now they're fairly strong.
I can't belive that 40k is a worse game.
I'm working on a megadungeon crawl in vein of Castlevanias, other old NES games (like Kick Master) and Warhammer. I figured I'll run it in SW if only to see if it's fun. Since I have no previous experience with the system I'm pretty sure that most of it will be either a cakewalk or murdermachine for my players, but they're okay with it, and we're both ready to do some adjustements and try again.
I'm worried about another thing, though - XP. SW advises to grant 1-3 points per session, which is pretty unsuitable for a megadungeon romp if characters get powerups at every five XP. So I was thinking about alternate means of advancement - would you say that awarding 2 XP for every defeated Figure and 3 XP for every defeated location overboss is alright? There's going to be plenty of bosses and sub-bosses in game, and I wish to emulate the steady and noticable advancement of NES games.
Also, Savage Worlds general, I guess.
PDFs:
https://www.mediafire.com/folder/g4jbcg5w649m8/Savage_worlds
I attempted a short dungeon crawl campaign using Savage Worlds a few months ago. I quickly ran into an unforeseen problem - Dungeon crawls are heavily reliant on killing monsters for XP, getting treasure (sometimes for XP), and obtaining gear upgrades. Savage World's system is shitty for all of the above. Individual monster kills don't give XP, so my players ended up avoiding all conflicts when possible. Gold and gear upgrades mean jack shit to Savage Worlds characters as there is very little difference between damage and gear stats. The die mechanics (exploding die, wild die) allow someone with a dagger to potentially one-shot a dragon, so really the only way to improve a character is by ranks.
Maybe you'll have a different experience, but I just found it didn't work well for dungeon crawling. It might work better for your game though, if you really push the horror aspect. I was just running a pre-written OSR D&D adventure.
>>48274547
Thank you for your thoughts.
> Individual monster kills don't give XP
Yeah, that's why I figure I'll grant them XP as they progress through important stuff, killing bosses and subbosses.
> my players ended up avoiding all conflicts when possible.
That's... actually something I like. I wouldn't like to encourage killing everything in sight anyways; the parts of castle inhabited by sentient-ish creatures have an "alarm meter" that rises as the players boink around and causes unpleasant side-effects when it gets too high. Players' best hope should be to sneakily get to bosses, come down on them hard and reach the Bad Guy's tower ASAP.
> Gold and gear upgrades mean jack shit to Savage Worlds
They won't have too many chances to spend the gold anyway, and most of the items are supposed to protect players from certain opponents' powers or open more areas of the castle/ make them easier to explore.
> The die mechanics (exploding die, wild die) allow someone with a dagger to potentially one-shot a dragon
Now, I admin that that worries me. Have you had bad experiences with dice funkiness? Any ideas on how to mitigate it?
Don't do it OP. Savage Worlds is a shit system that tries too hard to reinvent the wheel. The exploding die and raise mechanics make any form of encounter balance/planning impossible. A rank 1 novice can one-shot a dragon with lucky die rolls using his fist. The system boasts that bennies are used for "cool things" like players changing narrative or pulling off impossible stunts, but players just horde them for use as extra hit points. The chase system (any iteration of it) is an absolute shit storm of retardation. The 3-wound limit is just plain bad game design. The community is full of sad 40-something-year-old zealots who foam at the mouth at any notion of house ruling the assy mechanics.
What are witches like in your setting? What covens exist? What influence do they have?

Okay, I'm running a (mostly) solo game for a girl, who decided to start as a lone wandered, who's currently travelling through the steppes. I'm racking my brain trying to come up with anything interesting about them, but I just can't.

Think "The Revenant"
Hey /tg/,
I've been away from 4chan for several years now. Recently started lurking again (as in the past two days) as I'm about to move back to my native state for work.
I've been considering finding a tabletop group when I get settled in; I've always loved RPing but haven't done it in earnest in many years.
I started on 3.0 in middle school and then switched to 3.5 in HS. 4e happened while I was in college; looked over the rules and couldn't stop shitting myself for a couple days afterwards. Never found a good Pathfinder group where I live.
So what does /tg/ think of 5e? Did some reading, sounds better than 4e, but that's not of much help.
>>48272754
Since you seem to be allergic to good design, you are safe.
It's a bit more rules lite, but I really like it. It combines the best bits of 3e and 4e. It goes back to its much more RP/DM-fiat roots and the goal is to make things easy to resolve and that everything is dangerous at every level - i.e. you wont just roll your eyes at a goblin at 20th level, it can still fuck you up if there are enough of them. If you liked the munchkinning/optimisation of 3.5e then there's still lots of room for that.
I like it a lot.
Firstly, in case it actually needs clarifying, /tg/ is not a hive mind and there's lots of different opinions on here.
Secondly, one upside to 5e is that it's so comparatively easy to pick up and learn that it requires almost no real effort so if you decide you don't like it then almost no time is wasted at all.
It's much lighter in rules and the "deck-building" style of character creation where you look for the optimal combination of feats and skills is nonexistent however, so if that's what you liked most about 3e you might find it not to your linking.
It feels mechanically like a cross between 3e's unified mechanics and 2e's simplicity and emphasis on modularity in terms of "this could go into the game IF YOU WANT" rather then lots and lots and lots of hard rules covering absolutely everything.

Who the fuck thought this game was a good idea? I've only recently gotten to read it (in part due to Werewolf 20th) and I have to ask what the actual fuck was going on in people's mind when they made it? Oh sure on the surface it sound cool but my god! The setting. It read like how a pretentious, edgy kid from the '90 think the world is and how he's plotting his revenge against his rich religious fundamentalist Republican-voting parents or something. This game is ridiculously spiteful, childish and hating on society.
And just when I thought it couldn't get worse I decided to check the other supplements and the Fomori breed are so ridiculous I'm not sure if I'm angry at the stupidity or laughing until I pass out.
Can't help but feel there was a vaguely useable concept of a game in there but its buried under a level of childishness and edginess that make Mage and Vampire look positively good and mature by comparison.

Yeah we were pretty disappointed when our group finally got a copy of the book, back in the day. We dumped the fluff pretty quick and just made our own version.

When I first read about Fomori they seemed, conceptually, to be more akin to Chaos Spawn and the Possessed of warhammer 40k. That seemed all fine and dandy. The I read about Throwbacks and Normalite...
