So, i've been thinking up characters lately and liked the idea of a Satyr knight in full plate as a visual. It got me thinking about something, though: Very often, monstrous humanoids with animal features will get features of those animals but at human scale without any apparent thought of how they actually WOULD scale.

Obvious stuff would be that spider-people can usually walk on walls and ceilings like a spider, or a snake-person being able to spring out rapidly from a coil like a snake, but how well would these things really work when you put them to human scale?

Specific idea I had in mind was that a horse kick is obviously very powerful, but is that something about horse leg physiology or just because it's a big animal with a lot of muscle and mass compared to a human?

You ever been kicked in the face by a deer? That shit still hurts.
>>

Is it more powerful than what a fit human of roughly equal mass could deliver, though?

Also, kind of interested to see if /tg/ has thoughts on any other adopted features like the ones mentioned.

In general I wouldn't worry about it. I mean, if you're going to have people with prominent animal features, what's the point if they can't do the associated animal things? It's like why giants don't just collapse under their own weights as the square-cube law demands; it would be pretty lame and pointless if they did.

So i just joined a game, gm has brought in a new player on third session, he started telling us about his character and it is 13edgy666me, mysterious troubled past, hate for everyone but himself, sarcasm nd assholeness included.

I'm about ready to tell him this is a bad idea, find out the kid is only about 15, don't want to hurt his feelings and just say his character is terrible, also can understand he's and angst teen who is probably projecting.

Spent last couple hours making suggestions on how to change his character for the better, refuses to humanize his character or lose some of the edge

so he's entering the game with a sarcastic asshole who has lost everything, and loves nothing an no-one, has turned his back on his family and crown because he doesn't care about it, is depressed because as an elf he's lived so long everyone around him dies.

so... i don't wanna leave the game because he's not going to ruin the campaign by any means, he's just going to be real infuriating to deal with at times, what do you recommend?

Have a sit down and discuss to him how to better flesh out his character, and how to discard particular things that ain't all that great in the manner of working with the group, while not just turning him into the groups dress up doll. If he objects, ask him why he objects, why a piece of his character is so important that it shouldn't be removed/vastly modified and work with him then to make that one aspect more matured out, while remaining true to his original intent.

His concept sounds workable the way you put it. Immortals/Long Lived characters becoming kind of nihilistic is a viable characteristic, using sarcastic comedy to keep their spirits up, and usually just theirs up. Perhaps inspire him to then develop his character to maybe gain hope with the group he's with and overcome their fatigue of being so damn old to give a shit as they adventure together and become a team.

Talk it out, and work as a team irl too.

Go to /b/, save every image in a cringe thread that applies to people who generally think of themselves as edgy and cool(everyone with a fedora and/or katana and/or trenchcoat applies). Show him those images and tell him what makes his character different from them? Is it because he's handsome and well built? So then he's only different on the outside but inside he's an edgy aspie?
Make him question his choices the way you do.
Showing him the first episode of saiki kusuo might help if he's into anime... it just came out and it's about an esper who goes through daily life. He has a classmate afflicted with what they call ''chuunibyo", which is just moonspeak for 1337edgy555666777me. Show him how these characters just look like self-absorbed children.
Tell him how really scarred people try to go on through life showing interest in shallow talk and superficial relationships because they shield them from deep intrusion in their selves. Take him to the ER and let him talk to a doctor(if you're friends with one, otherwise don't bother them in their workplace), he'll see that someone surrounded by dead and dying every day is more chatty, just a little jaded and full of black humour.
You can even use the argument that this kind of character doesn't work for players because in the media it's usually featured(anime) they don't appear much, and since his character will be present most of the time it will get old fast.
Fuck, I mean, even videogames only let you play the edgy, cool, mysterious, mightier-than-the-protagonist dudes after you finish with the lamer characters(or after an installment or two, I'M LOOKING AT YOU ZERO, YOU MAGNIFICENT BLONDE ROBOT).
>>
>>48270024
So why's this character with the other PCs? If he hates everybody, working in a team is just asking for trouble. What can working with the group give him that he absolutely needs enough to break his antisocial behavior?

If he's pissed that everyone keeps dieing around him because he's so long-lived as an elf, why does he keep living in places without any other elves? That's a simple solution: just live with other elves, who are gonna have the same kind of lifespan as you.

So, me and my friends were kind of curious, if you wanted to play a game where you were building a town, making your own homesteads and such, developing the land, gentrification, etc., but still adventuring, what system would you use? What kind of systems have rules for investing in/owning businesses, giving income? What kind of systems have homestead rules? Even if there are systems like that, are there good ones?

Bumping with art.

Hey, I've been looking for some nice fantasy books to read lately, but I'm looking for books that capture the feel of old TTRPG games, focused in exploration and environments or just traveling to the unknown. I was thinking on reading Moorcock and his Elric saga since apparently it was an inspiration for OD&D, but I've heard that only the first book is worth reading. Any thoughts?

Otherwise, feel free to share your fav books and discuss them.

>I was thinking on reading Moorcock and his Elric saga since apparently it was an inspiration for OD&D, but I've heard that only the first book is worth reading.
That's not at all true. The original saga is, overall, pretty strong (Elric of Melniboné, The Sailor on the Seas of Fate, The Weird of the White Wolf, The Vanishing Tower, The Bane of the Black Sword, and Stormbringer). Note that the books are composed of various stories ("books") that tie together to varying degrees and which vary in quality as well. The Sailor on the Seas of Fate, for instance, starts off a bit weak, I think, but gets better after its first "book".
>>
>>48269088

Book of the New Sun, although it's not easy getting into. It definitely nails the exploration and mystery elements though.

Fritz Leiber's short stories about Fafhrd and The Grey Mouser have great old-school atmosphere, they're collected in 2 doorstops called "The First Book of Lankhmar" and "The Second Book of Lankhmar".

Jack Vance's Dying Earth books also have a great feel (dunno if it's precisely what you're looking for, slightly more whimsical but still excellent), they're collected into one doorstop.

I can tell you 2 obvious solutions: make something so fucking expensive that they care, or put them up against something that can't be bought.
>>
>>48267956
Give them a problem that wealth wouldn't solve, but don't cut them off or keep them from using it altogether.
Have something in mind that will actually make them benefit from not spending their wealth, or have it be a resource they will need to spend with caution, and have their reputation at stake.

How would you feel about a game that contains races that are intelligent and civilized but cannot be used by the players because of lore, balance, or undisclosed reasons?

Would you feel the game is limiting you in some way?

If it makes sense in context and the GM is fair about it, it's fine.

If the GM is an arse and uses it as an excuse to trot out a parade of overpowered DMPC's, they can go fuck themselves.

It's all a matter of execution, not the idea itself.

I'm currently playing a sci-fi homebrew with a custom setting with a few friends, and all the players are humans. So far it's gone great, partly because the players being humans doesn't restrict the variety of characters they can play and partly because the setting is based around having humans as separate from most of the other intelligent alien species in the setting.
>>
Nothing wrong with that. If orcs are the main antagonist, you aren't playing one. If ents are extremely rare in the setting and you don't have a good reason to play one, I don't care that it's in the rulebook.

When I start a game, I let players know what races are most common in the region, and if they want to play anything else they need justification. If I'm running a viking game, Tom, you can't play an aboriginee.

So we're balls deep in a space battle. Two ships in our fleet down, four of theirs sent to space davey jones. Just our last ship versus their last ship. It's down to this last round. We can't take another salvo from them. We can't escape even if we wanted to. Rogue trader calls down. Hit'em with everything we've got. Boosting the macrobatteries, the lance, and the missile tubes. We fire everything and the kitchen sink. Power is siphoned from all non-essential decks and systems. Everything that can shoot goes for it. Dice are in our favor. Massive damage. His engines are crippled and his crew took a massive hit. Fires and decompression everywhere. But it wasn't enough. We failed to take out his biggest guns. This was it. We were toast.

"This is horseshit!"
>Those are the rules, and you're out of guns to shoot.
The DM explains in a subdued manner. The table is silent. We had these characters for over 3 months now. We were heavily invested in them. Other players start talking about their final goodbyes to their families. I slam my fist on the table.
"This is bullshit. We've got one macrobattery and one missile battery left"
>They're on the other side of the ship. They aren't in the firing arc. And you don't have enough movement left to turn around, even in your ship could do that much of a turn.
Everyone is morose. So close to victory. Talk of new characters starts up. In desparation I grab the ship sheet to see if there's anything we can do.
"I want to roll the ship"
>What?
"If we roll the ship like this" *demonstrates with the lovingly painted ship mini*, " then we can line up the firing arc of the other guns"
>There's nothing in the rules-
"We have maneuvering thrusters don't we? Right here on the sheet. Best Quality Augmented Retro-Thrusters. "provides enhanced maneuverability"."

Rogue Trader's player takes the sheet from me. He looks at it. "He's right, we did get those."
>Those wouldn't help you.
Our resident space geek pipes in. "Actually, they'd have to be positioned like so, " he points to the spots on the model where they would go, "so if you output thrust here and here you could easily roll the ship"
>Even so...
"I'll burn a fate point"
Everyone stops and looks at me.
>That's your last one. If this fails you're done for.
"If this fails we're toast anyway."
>Fine. It's going to be a -60 Hellish test.
I cast my dice. The fate of thousands rests in this dice roll. The dice bounce. Once. Twice. Then they roll to a stop. Then I grin. A chuckle bubbles up in my throat, then exploding out of me into full blown hysterical laughter.
>001
With a skill born of desperation, my character grabs the controls and rolls the ship around it's central axis. The metal groans and shrieks at this abuse. Finally coming to a rest after a 180 degree roll. The emperor's will be manifest, the guns fire, scoring crits on his munitorum and warp engine. The enemy ship, having already taken so much abuse, succumbs. A cascade of explosions flows up and down his ship. Massive amounts of atmosphere are vented, bodies and ejecta float freely. His warp core destabilizes, and his entire ship, explosions and all, are sucked into the warp.

Silence falls on the bridge. No one can quite believe what we pulled off. At last a cheer starts up. Soon congratulations are passed around the gaming table. But it is a somber affair. We always agreed that if any of our characters burned their last fate point they would be retired rather than continue playing as essentially a guided NPC. A pyrrhic victory. A battle won, but a valued crew member lost. The win was bittersweet.

Beginner DM here looking for inspiration. How did your D&D or pathfinder game start out with its first adventure? Not gonna opy anybody, but wanna see how you all did it. I don't have any problems mechanic wise, just brainstorming ideas for the plot of it all. The first adventure I mean. I am thinking of having it tie in thematically to the whole war of the gods that occured right after the world was created, that left several magical "mutations" throughout the land. These mutations can vary in size, scope, and whether it affects life (like causing a sub-species to branch off of humans) or geography (like creating floating islands). Anyway, how did you guys start your first adventures, and did they tie directly to the overall campaign plot?

Just think the campaign in L-M-S scales
>Large
Think about the setting and things that are actually going on in the world at the moment, about your gods, magic, etc
>Medium
Think about the situation at nationwide scale, here's where you think about your BBEG plot.
>Small
This is where the PCs affect the plot, try to think how their own decisions present the world and get related to the BBEG. This is also where you design the dungeon and immediate plot.

Try to keep preparations to a minimum and don't fear improvising the plot: You don't always know what to expect from your players, so you should be ready to come up with ideas and keep the narrative flowing.
Try doing some exercises with tarot cards: Take 5 cards, read their meaning, and build a story with that in less than 10 minutes.

>The gods people worship are actually horrible demons

What's the best way to do this?

Zendikar-style, with functional religions complete with divine servants, built on distorted ancient myths of sealed eldritch horrors?
Or the classic JRPG "you've all been duped, God is evil, now you must kill God"?
Or just the "God's absent, the Devil is taking his place and doing a shit job until you help restore God"?

One of my worlds has people worshipping servants of the illithid god (who is a Christ expy, long story). I plan to have the two show up eventually and make people realize "oh, we were all just pawns for something that wants us dead". It's far easier in worlds where the gods don't show their presence often or at all, making misunderstandings much easier and deadlier.

I have played a rouge or wizard for years.

Over the past three gaming sessions I have went melee heavy paladin with 'For Justice!' 'Smite the unclean!' and other such battlecries being my main mode of play.

It has been such a fucking blast. Greatweapon mastery and Greatweapon fighting has me doing stupid amounts of damage early on.

The DM lays some spooky atmosphere and a mold mound animates? Justice fears no mound!
>Great hammer it to oblivion

DM summons up a bunch of ghouls? Away unclean things!
>Greatsword hacks 'em to bits

Just running in like a proper tank and fucking shit up with a big ol' smitin' stick has been the most fun I have had in D&D in a long time.

Keeping in character is great too because it means a lot more dangerous situations keep on popping up.

>You find a mauled body on the side of the road with a note written on it that reveals important plot points. The howling of wolves can be heard coming closer.

I give the body as decent a burial as I can.

>The wolves will be upon you before you can finish
Then I am fighting wolves. This lost soul deserves some dignity.
>Manage to kill four of the six dire wolves because I am rolling fire and the DM is rolling shit
>Two of my party members get fucked up and I scoop them up and book it before they are killed

I need to go back and bury that guy at some point.
