I am running a sci-fi tabletop and I needed a name for a merchant/broker style of ship. One name I thought of was Honor of Traders but I am not so sure of that. I want a name in the same style but I am trying to go for a gallows humor type of name. The name generators I've found don't really have what I am looking for. Pic is supposed to be what the ship sort of looks like.

Your name is Victory. Well, not your real name, but the codename assigned to you by the Bureau of Special Research and Actions. The primary governing body for American ‘magical girl’ operations. They’ve dropped you off in Italy, Bureau agents leaving you at a cafe in Rome to await additional mission details from a spy returning from deep within Nazi territory.

Said mission was relatively simple. A defector of critical importance was looking to escape the clutches of the regime, and you were to provide them with the means to do so. The Bureau has remained extraordinarily tight lipped regarding the exact nature of the defector. All you know is that they’re valuable to the Allied war effort. Failure here would be a very, very bad thing, that much is certain.

You take another sip of your fancy coffee and enjoy the cool night air as you wait for this contact to show his face. Maybe he won’t. Maybe he’s getting tortured by the Hexenkraft or the SS as you sit here. You shake those thoughts from your mind. It was never a good idea to start a mission pessimistically.

Soon after you drain your cup of it’s contents, a blonde haired man sits at your table wordlessly. His eyes quickly dart behind him, before settling back onto you. His leather jacket is bulging, obviously hiding something. If this man is supposed to a spy then he definitely doesn’t look the part. He clears his throat nosily,

“Excuse me fraulein, you are Victoria Jones, correct? I believe I have something for you, a book from a family friend”

The blonde haired man has somewhat of an accent, maybe he picked it up after spending so much time around the Krauts? He glances over his shoulder again, scanning the surroundings for something, or someone. After he’s seemingly satisfied he turns to you, giving you an uneasy smile.

How do games normally go with it?

About how high on the creepy anime bullshit spectrum does it go? I'm thinking about grabbing it for my group.

It was fun for a one-off.

I ran it for some random people I vaguely knew on the internet a few years ago and now we have a pretty stable couple of DnD games going. MAID created the bond that persists today, ever since beating Godzilla at yu-gi-oh.

>Is MAID rpg fun?
Yes, if your players are ready to perform shenanigans. It's a rules-light slapstick comedy game, you have to be able to run that kind of game and the players have to be able to run with it too.
>How do games normally go with it?
Depends on what you want, really.
>About how high on the creepy anime bullshit spectrum does it go? I'm thinking about grabbing it for my group.
Depends on how hard you want to push it. There are seduction rules, but I've never played with them, and I've ran many one-shots of MAID and played in a campaign.

Sounds good. Probably going to pick it up then. I was a bit worried that it would be too weird for some of my group. We all watch anime and whatnot, but the power levels range from one guy who only watches berserk/jojo/etc to the guy who collects figurines and tried to learn Japanese.

Four figures silently walk away from the embassy. Behind them, a very angry-looking catgirl crosses her arms with a frown.

No one pays any mind to the slowly retreating group. Everyone is more interested in the catgirl as she angrily shouts orders. Most of them to her knights, and her guard.

The mood among that group is more somber, than anything else. Maybe it's because one of them is very clearly teeming with anger.

"Lass." One of them mumbles, "Are ye gonna calm down or are ye gonna go off and murder somethin'?"
"We'll see." One of them replies, she hoists her spear over her shoulders and continues on like nothing happened.

You are Jack Albator, excellent interrogator, arbitrator, and can be very threatening if nothing else. Today's foray into your newfound skills has been a disappointing, and draining experience.
Of course, the one you promised to spend the day with puts this in much more elegant terms.

"This has been the worst date ever." Madeleine pouts, looking in your direction, "You know that, right?"
"Aye." You take a flask from your pocket, and take a drink from it. "Want a sip?"
"Please."

Madeleine takes the flask and nearly empties it. It's just as well, really.

So, what did you learn today?
Aye, right, you remember.

Most of Catland is corrupt, the butler probably didn't do it by himself but good luck finding the people who did, and Biscotti still has a mole in it.

Great.

Oh right, and Yuuki wants to take Louise to the edges of the Earth where the scary politics can't get her.
That's right, too.

Speaking of which-
"Need a drink?"
"No." The black-haired girl desperately stranging the pole-end of her spear continues staring into the distance.

>Well, talk to you later.

I know that sorcerers get their power from themselves, and that most other get their magic from a patron that can be a god, demon or nature itself.

It depends. A necromancer is a specialization, not a methodology.

Wizards generally get their power by understanding how the world works and manipulating the laws of reality.

They are not characters. The players do not talk with them. They do not explain things. They do not consider mortal viewpoints. They do not sit down and have a chat.

They are forces of nature. They do, and the world shapes itself around them. It cannot but. They operate on a level completely divorced from what the players operate on.

My group are clamouring for a vanilla high fantasy game, I've played nWoD with them and Rogue Trader and while they enjoyed it, they've unanimously said "Something more heroic and magical". Now we all play quite a lot of Video Games as well, and when I said, "Something maybe WoW like?" they jumped at it.

I've never played a d20 game be it DnD, PF or anything else. I know DnD4 gets stick for 'wow like' design but I'm not sure what that entails. What system should I pick to best emulate a World of Warcraft style of gameplay that lets players pick from a variety of races and play distinct classes that are all useful in some way? Is 4e a good pick, should I go for 5 and use the Warcraft homebrew for it? Is Fantasycraft any good?

>I know DnD4 gets stick for 'wow like' design but I'm not sure what that entails.

It's generally by people that didn't really play 4e and are parroting some shit they heard on /tg/. This post will probably start some sort of edition war but 4e is a fine place to start if you want to get into some real crunch and heroic gameplay. If you're looking for something easier to pick up and play I would recommend any number of retro clones (games that recreate the feeling of oldschool gaming with more streamlined mechanics). I recently played Shadow of the Demon Lord which was fun, as well as Ambition and Avarice which was good as well. Personally for retro clones I enjoy Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG. It has a nice mix between crunch and roleplay but it can be overwhelming when you look at the magic section and it's like 300 pages. The magic system is a bit bloated, I will admit, but it's not nearly as intimidating as it seems on first glance.

If you are looking for something basic, you might just want to start with, well, D&D Basic (Moldvay edition). That or Basic Fantasy RPG are both great for new players.

Avoid 5e and 3.X D&D, and Pathfinder, although the cult will show up soon enough to try and convert you. Not that they are irredeemable but many new players get trapped into playing these systems because they are so popular when in reality they are just nothing special and in my opinion leave you with a skewed idea of what TTRPGs are. D&D is uniquely D&D at every edition, and while that's fine, there are so many good and simple systems out there that you should explore first.
>>
>>48261802
>avoid d&d
>except the one I like
lel
In all seriousness 4e is alright for what you want. Everyone has powers they use and the at will / encounter / daily makes them a bit easier to manage than long and short rests which can be somewhat arbitrary.
>>
>>48261802
It wasn't my goal to start an edition war about anything, I'd just like to hear the merits and shortcomings of the generic high fantasy systems and decide from there. I've played quite a few other RPGs so I'm not particularly afraid of being glued to a new system at the expense of others.

I'm not exactly looking to jump into the deep end when it comes to Crunch. While I get that almost ever RPG has some barrier into getting into it, I'd prefer the barrier just be at the start rather than a constant obstacle. Basic Fantasy RPG looks pretty decent but it seems (I've not got a pdf of it just yet), but it seems like it only has a few classes? I was hoping for something akin to prestige classes or feats or something, to represent the Specialisations that players can adopt in WoW to further distinguish their class.

I was under the impression that Shadow of the Demon Lord was more akin to WFRP2, rather low key Fantasy? I'll have a look into it. I've seen 13th Age and Fantasycraft get kicked around a bit too, are either of those suitable?

So, my group has been watching a lot of heist movies like Heat, Oceans Eleven, stuff like that. They wanted to run something along those lines, but our GM hasn't really run anything other than D&D or Rogue Trader. I was wondering if there was any systems that could work for this idea? Alternatively, ideas for cool heist ideas would also be cool. Just trying to help my friend out.

Here I've made a pyramid of 36 classes all steaming from Thief on the bottom left, Mage on the bottom right, and Fighter at the top in the center.

This scale and calculation I've done is for each of the classes and their chances of succeeding at something that the fighter is best at, fighting martially. On the left I have the amount of d6 rolled for the check and the number next to it the target number they must get under to succeed.

So as you can see, the vanilla thief and mage to fight martially and do as well as the fighter roll 8d6 and have to get below a 16. This gives them a 0.75% chance of doing as good as the fighter.

If I set the rule as, the lower the number the better, however, it's literally impossible for the mage or thief to do as good as the fighter at fighting martially. This is because with 8d6 as the mage or thief the lowest you can roll is an 8 and wI think the fighter rolling 1d6 the lowest he can roll is a 6. Therefore the fighter is ALWAYS better at martial combat.

Would you play a system like this? What do you like and not like about it?

>>
>>48259022
a class pyramid.....that is entirely in stat calculation?

Who even cares? The important difference in classes are theme and function, not die sizes.
>>
>>48259051
The theme and function of each will come out of what they are mechanically good at. This pyramid decides those mechanics.

Thus, the theme of the fighter is fighting and martial combat. As we move down the pyramid from fighter more and more to the bottom right we will have a mix of mage and fighter which is a spellsword. The themes of each class will be different for each non-shaded triangle.
