Why can't you both comprise and try to have fun in a way that isn't boring or Oppressive to the other? I'm sure you can both find SOMETHING. Right?
How to make this work?
>>48275215
The way they worded that is fucking retarded
it should probably say "whenever you lose life, gain that much life instead" and it'd be a lot less confusing.
You'll probably want a way to bounce it so you don't lose when you hit 20 so you can go back down to almost 0. You could also donate it to a lifegain deck and win instantly.
Are they any good Age of Sail RPGs for someone in a Master & Commander/Aubery & Maturin or Sid Meier's Pirates! kind of mood?
I know 7th Sea exists, but I've heard it features remarkably little seafaring. What other games are out there, if any?

I'm not gonna say Sci-Fi kills the Age of Sail vibe, but it certainly stifles it.
Anyone else in /tg/ see Zero Charisma? What did you think of it?
If you haven't seen it, it's an indie movie about a stereotypical geek GM named Scott (metalhead, paints miniatures, etc.) and what happens when he loses a player for his campaign, and a hipster geek joins and starts to take over the game.
Personally I thought it was a mixed bag. It's a dark comedy that had some funny moments but eventually it got a bit too dark. Towards the end of the movie the plot went off the rails a bit, I felt it could have been handled better although I'm not quite sure how.
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtgoAt7ZTyE
I thought it was boring and painted gamers as stereotypical slacker/losers. I've been gaming for 25 years now. I have certainly met sad sacks but all of my gaming buddies are normal dudes with educations, jobs, wives and kids. If anything I'd argue your average rpger is more inclined toward STEM career paths which pay well.
>>48265100
Yeah it was pretty bad about stereotyping, though like you said there are some people out there that fit them. The movie was clearly created by gamers but it didn't seem to have much interest in portraying normal gamers.
I thought this was one of the better scenes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FYizKD5VuII agree with Scott about MMOs heh
One bump to see if anyone else has seen this
What have been your most memorable cursed, intelligent, and/or magic items?
For example, In my current campaign we have a Witch hunter themed Inquisitor who has an intelligent cursed longsword that has an extreme hatred towards arcane casters but imposes negative levels and silence to any arcane caster that wields it.
How about you guys, /tg/? Anything flavorful, interesting, or just plain dumb?
>>48264830
We once had an intelligent Helmet of Blindsense, who would tell you where to go, often into walls or other objets. We later found out it was originally a poorly-sighted wizard who accidentally misread his spell and sealed his soul into the helmet. It was a blast to use...
The wizard's name was Fred, and he talked like the character of the same name from Courage, the Cowardly Dog. I was the character who wore fullplate and wore Fred on my head. It looked like a Full-Faced Gladiator's Helm with no eye holes.
>/tg/ uses anything that's not already spoon fed to them in the books
I'm a big fan of putting sapient, malevolent demons in swords. Aware of their surroundings, and actively shit-talking whoever is wielding their prison.
We all know the Alignment system is absolute shit.
But would removing the (wholly subjective) Good/Evil axis, leaving behind only Law/Chaos, be better?
>>48284474
Yes. That is how it originally was and how it should be.
If you're going to use alignment at all, that is.
>>48284474
No. The only concept /tg/ is more autistic about than Good/Evil is Law/Chaos.
More problems come from trying to reinvent or "improve" alignments than are ever solved. The best solution is accepting them as they stand and if you can't do that choosing a system which doesn't use them as mechanics.
Alignments should never have been added to the game.
The entire reason they exist is so that there is an in-universe explanation for why good can counter evil and why law can counter chaos.

Question: Can you really call your homebrew setting a D&D homebrew if you kick out Elves, Dwarves, Halflings, and half-races? Are Planetouched (Tieflings, Aasimaar, Genasi) worth including as player races? Or would it be better to include monstrous races like Bugbears, Aarakocra, etc. if you want to have a more "harnessed magic" feeling?
>>48214768
Also...
What is the motherfucking difference between Halflings and Gnomes, functionally? I kind of get that Gnomes have some innate magical abilities which Halflings don't, but are Halflings just lucky thieves and good coocks?
I'm currently working on a setting that, originally, I wanted to be a standard D&D setting with the standard races, caught in the middle of or just after a huge war. Sort of like Eberron, only racial rather than between humans, more like LoTR. But the thought of putting Elves in all the forests and Dwarves under all the mountains really disgusts me, because I have places for some of the D&D races where I think they do fit and serve a purpose.
Orcs, for example, are LOTR-esque conquerors seeking to bring the world under the brutal and bloody rule of Gruumsh. And they're doing a good job of conquering nations, not getting their piggy faces pushed in by every passing band of adventurers.
Gnomes are seafarers, renowned for their agility and speed as sailors. They're still curious and cunning, but they apply that to exploring for new lands and trade routes.
Humans are still bog-standard humans, but their culture dominates the region that I'm building out. And that's basically Arthurian with Christ replaced with an active, meddling pantheon of gods.
But because I made them Arthurian, I want fey to play a slightly bigger role in the setting. Not as playable races, but having them inhabit some of the regions that, being less disturbed by civilization, would normally be set aside for elves and dwarfs. And I don't just want to shove in elves, dwarfs, halflings, warforged, changeling, planetouched, etc. just because they're playable races. So would it be fine if I just have three "core" D&D races available and the rest are just homebrew? Or is that too limiting for players and too snowflakey?
>>48214922
As long as the homebrew races are reasonable, players should be fine.

I'm examining ways of communicating via music and sound over distance.
Is it possible for a bullroarer to be made of something other than wood? In particular, could one be made of iron?

The Mutant Epoch
Im trying to get a group together for a game of TME. Obviously the hard part is finding a GM so im willing to provide the rulebooks and help learn the system.
The exact time and dates can be discussed once the GM is on board.
If anyone wants a link to the books let me know.
Keep being excellent /tg/!
A small security camera watches an office. People in business suits rush from office to office with papers and data pads in hand as others work over videos and photos on computer terminals. View screens cover the walls, showing news coverage of hundreds of different channels and agencies across Union space, and almost instantly they cut to static. The workers stop, like drones cut off from their queen, looking at the wall of static as an emergency sign appears with a loud monotone beep apologizing for technical difficulties. The people look around, confused, as their own devices loose interstellar service as their various comm relay service providers suddenly cease to function.
Then they do again. The computers show alerts flashing on their screens, and data pads and phones chime with mail alerts. The camera zooms in as they fumble in confusion and a man walks out from an office labeled with the title “Editor in Chief” in bold letters.
“What's going on?” He asks. “Anyone have service?”
“Nothing outside the system.” Someone replies as they read over various notifications displayed on holograms and handheld screens. The Editor pulls out his own handheld data pad, and flips through notifications of his own.
“These are gag orders.” He says with confusion. “From the BFI office. What the hell is going on?”
