am i missing something? it looks like somebody swings a weapon at a PC and there is literally a 50% chance that they instantly die.
i mean, you want combat to feel rough, but that seems excessive. i'm pretty sure in real life your odds aren't quite that bad.
i guess there's a roll before this that dictates whether you actually got any damage or not?
is there some kind of defensive action (e.g. protecting yourself with your arms) that would decrease the chance of getting hit in the head / torso and increase the chance of getting hit in the arms?

Not all characters will accept random job offers, especially dangerous ones. And of course players will take any excuse to hang out in-character but a better GM can tie it all in.
OP what about they all get kidnapped and as they escape whatever prison they're in, they befriend eachother and vow to get to the bottom of the mystery. Or something. Might be too rail-roady.

It's at least partially the player's job to get their character interested in the story. Nobody enjoys a game grinding to a halt while the DM tries to work what the fuck is going to make John's monk stop talking about how all physical reward is ephemeral and accept the damn job so we can play.

It wasn't very coherent at first, but by 2nd Ed you rolled a d10 and then who went first was modified by the type of action you were doing.
Spells, especially potent ones, tended to go last and if the caster was hit then they basically immediately lost the spell in addition to usually being fucked up pretty bad thanks to how frail everyone was back then.

Maybe, I could be shit and the reason every role-playing opportunity turns into memespouting is because the world isn't good enough to warrant taking seriously. Maybe they're just childish. I'm not sure.
As for the NPCs being shit, maybe, but they haven't met them yet. They followed a side quest plot hook and instead of saving a village from a witch they set it on fire. Which is fine, but DMing for people who are bored with anything other than slaughtering innocents gets repetitive.

Extra clue: The party sticks their hands into a pit of pins to answer the question. Answering it wrong makes the pins shock them.
My players worked on this one entirely too long before I artificially upped the pace, and when they finally gave up, one said the answer was bullshit. I'm here to make sure it and the others are actually up to muster.
