But... a few weeks ago this weird blueskin girl (?) just walks up to me while I'm on guard duty. I tell her to back away, that she's scum undeserving of the Emperor's light, yada yada yada... Star Wars is the best Space Opera setting. It has the most room for player characters to do things without having to worry about stepping on the Canon's toes, and it's instantly recognizable to just about everyone.

We've taken a 2 week break over Christmas, which I think was a good idea. One player was getting on the nerves of others, and the DM, to where the DM laid down the law. Hopefully the break will ease tensions.
We recently finished a major story arc, which was good but it wound up taking over everything else, and was very focused on one player for quite a while, so it's nice to see others get some time to shine.
On the whole I'm really pleased with where it's at, and looking forward to seeing where it'll go.

The dnd casters have never had to pay in time and energy in a manner that forces them to actually allocate resources in a sensible manner.
Casting needs to be slower and cost more, for instance in fatigue. This creates a divide between "fast and simple" martials and "slow and elaborate" casters.
tl;dr casters need to be vulnerable to surprise attacks and being defenseless. They also need to pace themselves.

Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games.
Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.
