There's so much Game Master advice yet so little Player advice.
What are tips, tricks, or advice you have to give for playing RPGs, /tg/? You may be general but you may also be specific to a game.
>>53013745
There's a lot of advice on how to play specific systems. Like what race to combine with what class.
There isn't much talk about how exactly to be a player.
Kantian ethics are awesome for table top games, in terms of player behavior
>>53013745
Don't be a dick, and remember that other players would like some of the limelight too.
>>53013745
Actually put though into your characters.
I make it a point to create at least two dozen NPCs they know or are related to.
I give them multiple goals, fears, desires, and beliefs.
But I also keep it mostly to myself unless the GM asks for it. No need to drown them in pages of character info.
Also, be active in your games. Nothing is more annoying that a player who never acts independently. Be your own stick and carrot.
Anyone here have experience building a Magic: the Gathering battle box / wizard's tower?
Basically
>shared deck of ~200+ cards
>no lands in deck; instead, each player has 1 of each basic land and 5 allied guildgates in a command zone and may play one to the battlefield each turn (acts for all intents and purposes as playing a land from hand)
>start with four cards, no mulligans, max hand size still 7
http://mtgbattlebox.com/rules.html
I rarely have more than 1 other person to play Magic with, and while we've enjoyed playing Pauper against one another I'm looking for something with more variance.
Bump again
fuck
>>53013646
not really, but my friend and I used to jokingly play a format where we'd pick up a stack of nonland cards and draw from it the way you do with wizard's tower. for your land drop, you could put a card from your hand facedown and it counts as any color. totally retarded format but it was fun between matches and what not
So I watched a couple games on twitch.
D&D games........
I'm not saying I watched them ALL, or saw everyone streaming their game. However, I just gotta ask, WTF?
>No rp
>no plots
>no sense of 'adventure'
>no funny
>seriously didn't look fun
I've had some bad times involving gaming. When one of our regular members dropped our numbers down to 4, that was bad, and sad. We knew we wouldn't find a quick replacement (still haven't).
But we kept on, and kept the same "quality" to our games. I know, I know, quality is in the eye of the viewer, but damn....wtf is wrong with these online DM's?
Is THIS the kind of shit that people watch and think "This is how you play d&d"? I mean you CAN play it that way, but why would you want to?
Some of you /tg/fags are very creative. You fucks need to start DM'ing games and providing something GOOD to watch, in hopes of drawing others into the sport.
If I was just learning about ttrpgs, and watched some of these fuckers play, I'd find a new hobby quickly.
/tg/, I'm disappointed in you all.
>>53011433
>Watching a session
>dm tells group that a tall tree could provide a spotting bonus
>female immediately shapeshifts into a bumblebee to fly to the top
>everyone praises her as being 'clever' for thinking of that
A.Fucking.Bumblebee.
I vomited a bit.
>>53011433
I felt this way when I listened to Acquisitions Incorporated.
I mean, those guys I think have played quite a bit of DnD, and the two that are from Penny Arcade are actually accomplished DMs supposedly (they write about really interesting sessions on the webpage and one of them has been playing for a long while), and yeah they played 4e which is more tactical but... it was so bland!
"The goblin misses you/hits you for 2 damage."
"You kill him."
"He is bloodied."
One of them, the guy playing Jim Darkmagic, was actually trying (saying out loud the descriptions of spells, talking of himself in the third person... jokes of course, but at least a semblance of RP).
I don't know if it gets better later on but it was pretty damn shit at the start. And from what some people write on here (minmaxing, hating character descriptions, open world etc.), I guess they prefer it this way. I don't know why though. I think for one, vidya is way better at the numbers/strategy thing, so if I was that kind of person I wouldn't go for a ttrpg.

>Pc's are climbing stairs down
>1 pc hangs back at top of stairs and listens for sounds
>other pc's charge into the room and get attacked by some sonic blasting creature that hits them all for 4d8 damage
>other pc hears the battle and sits at the top of the stairs, rummaging through kobold slave beds
>pc's hit the creature and it flees into a big pit in the floor
>it was literally a room by room adventure
>no plot, no 'story', no fun

>The Frog of Fate
The Frog of Fate appears at first to be mist coalesced into a frog-like figure, no larger than a house cat, with large eyes and a meek disposition. It is often reported to wear cloth and enjoys candle light and serene groves. It is found only in disturbed ancient ruins and tombs of the world, where treasure hunters and adventurers of any sort has died. When backed into a corner of feeling especially frightened, it uses minor psychic powers to create a random prophecy of an obscure or fabricated religion inside the mind of its target, who is overcome with a feeling of purpose and duty in the world, and goes off to become the hero of the Frog's created legend. It can be anything from carrying a pebble from a cave to a pond at two random points, to becoming powerful enough to challenge the Gods themselves.

My shot at it
Your last character finds a magic ring know as the Lens of the Blood. The magic of the ring amplifies the qualities of your race, turning you first into a paragon of your kind and then granting you extra powers and abilities extending from the existing qualities of your people, even to the point of physical transformations.
What powers does your character gain?

How do you deal with psychics and body manipulators?
I admit, we're playing a pretty gritty setting where 'the bad guys won' and now the heroes are protecting people in unconventional ways.
The psychic scans the city looking for known villains, makes herself invisible to the mind and shanks their brains.
The body manipulator kind of does the same thing, but instead of scanning, he morphs into the villain's friends and family, gets them in a vulnerable position and tears out their heart (and stops there if they're lucky).
There's two other heroes. A gun using martial artist, like Batman if he was a Grammaton Cleric. And a singer who uses his voice to deafen. Nothing too bad.
My problem is I can't keep a steady villain. Heart Ripper and Brain Shanker, not their names but might as well be, make sure no one sticks around for long.
Wat do?
Body manipulation wouldn't work for replacing close friends and family without months of research on their personality and habits.
As for the physic you're gonna need a villain specialized to stop them.
>>53007332
I mean...there's nothing particularly wrong with heroes feeling powerful. However, if you feel like too many villains of yours are jobbing, don't forget that what they can do you can do tenfold.
Don't be afraid of boosting the PL of your villains and giving them ways to counter such as distracting the heroes with endangered citizens. Heck, the villain might biologically "infest" someone that the Brain Shanker can't get away with mentally hurting.
Basically, just give them different problems to handle in a fight that makes them do things outside of "kill villain" and encourages to use the powers they have in atypical ways.
>>53007332
Unless you've went up against a kaiju monstergirl that can summon two high level swarms from her ovipositor that can both Interpose and heal her on top of having Luck Powers among other fucktons of different powers, I'd consider you very lucky.

When are Disney actually going to give us a good Star Wars movie?
>>53006251
Probably never. RO and TFA showed us they're more than willing to go the Marvel route and keep cranking out film after film with just the bare minimum amount of effort put into them relying on brand recognition and exploiting this recognition in order to get their money.
I've been told that Star Wars D20 makes a pretty good generic sci-fi system. Could I use it to run a sword and planet game or is the force to integral to the system?
Would it be better to use the FFG games?
>Terraform venus
>Mostly deserts and mediterranean.
Is that nonsense?
>>53003659
You'd have to figure out how to thicken its crust, since it doesn't really have one.
>>53004008
And pull the acid / molten silicon rain out of it's atmosphere.
But honestly: it's your game, go nuts.
(I always liked the "Dragons of Venus" setting from HFY)
>>53004008
venus does have a crust. it's not a gaseous planet, it just has a very intense atmosphere which completely covers the planet. it's the same as global warming on earth but to the nth degree.
in order to terraform the planet the biggest challenge would be to reduce the atmosphere. the first thing that comes to my mind is introduction of c02 consuming bacteria. if we can introduce a quickly reproducing bacteria that would consume the planets c02 and turn it into oxygen or other less difficult gasses we could start to see the planet change. the planet is extremely hot though, so whatever we put there would have to survive 500c temperatures. as far as i know there are no creatures documented on earth that can survive above 100c.
because the temperature would kill off biological life the alternative would then be to engineer nano-machines which turn co2 into oxygen or another less dangerous gas. that would be the most plausible explanation for how it could be done.
once the atmosphere was tamed the temperature would drop which could allow us to introduce biological agents. even then the planet is very volcanically active which makes it somewhat scary.
