tl;dr; 2005 STi with a spun rod bearing. Should I buy a short block? What one? OEM? What other parts are typically needed? Turbo? Oil shit? Should I get the block worked on and replace the internals? I tried looking at the big subie forums, but its all just circle jerking.

Seems like a good deal t'bh even if you're not handy or don't have a comfy garage you can probably get a warranted transmission professionally put in for $1000 and there you go. Since it's only got 3rd out so far you can even test drive it enough to make sure nothing ELSE is fucked up plus get it wherever you need it to be to get fixed with no towing involved. A lot of /o/tists would probably just drive it with no 3rd.

Got a call from my brother saying he wrecked his winter car and if I'd trade my second car for his 1998 BMW 328i. The clutch is going out but he's including the replacement part/kit. so that's the one major thing I'd have to do to it.
How reliable are these things if I got that fixed? The car I'd be trading on my end is an 85 Nissan Stanza Liftback that needs nothing and is basically mint.

Go ahead and benchrace. I've owned more vehicles than you've seen years, and I was thoroughly underwhelmed by the Trans am. The interior is 90s KIA tier too.
They are what got me interested in sports coupes again, but they are a letdown in reality. And I am a Pontiac fanboi. The 370z blew the Trans am away in the feels dept, that's why I bought one instead.
The 370z has Jap class with muscle acceleration, and the handling characteristics you'd expect from a traditional two seat rwd coupe making 330+hp at the crank.
You fell for the meme, while people who actually like cars and driving chose any number of quicker sharp handling cars in the price range.
