I live in the US and I need a first car. My budget is $4000, and I'd like something fun, but still practical for going to school every day. I don't really want a miata, either

OP here.
Its salvaged and I have been looking for a car that looks like a evo. What do you guys think of it and is it worth it?

Dude, no, just no.

Ferrari shopping with my dad tomorrow
Any ideas? Put name down for 488 or just get 458? Or nah?
>>14138506
458 speciale
>>14138506
You have to fill out an application. Ferrari will tell you if are allowed to be a customer or not.
>>14138517
What is the difference between the Italia and Speciale? I know Italia is worse but why?
So shouldn't wait for 488?
>Two wrecks in two cars in 6 monthsj
>Estimates for repairs exceed 70% vehicle's value
>Not "totalled", but total-loss based on repair cost vs value.
>Two 5-figure settlement checks
>Bought back both cars
>Both cars paid off in full - mandatory by insurance after total-loss
>Almost 20k in combined debt paid off overnight
>Repaired both cars myself for fraction of cost, P+P parts ftw
>Two "free" cars
>Still have almost 10k
I only worked the first three months of this year and have been unemployed ever since. However, I made over 30k in settlements over the last 6 months.
Pay your insurance /o/.

Isn't this fraud? If not, how do you do it?
I need to know.
>>14138394
Insurance companies hate this one weird trick.

Sounds like mendacity.

When i start my car, it has a tough time starting. It usually stutters on the first crank, but never fails. Also, periodically my power windows wont work within a few minutes of the car being started.
Is this a pretty talltale sign of battery going out?
Pic related
Alternator.

You bought a VW, what did you expect?
>>14138155
could be battery, could be something else on the electrical circuit. is it a diesel? If it is have you ridden it hard enough to clean out any buildup in the last ~30k miles?
Would you buy a sub-100 HP Sidekick? Is that safe for a first manual vehicle? I don't drive particularly fast in my automatic. Safe and steady.
>>14138141
Corolla
>at least 125 HP
>>14138141
I have the 16 valve version tracker, which I think is over 100hp but not by much. Plenty of torque but don't expect to bust 85mph even floorboarded in 5th. It's pretty happy around 65-70mph on the highway though.
The thing is a cracker box if you're talking about safety. It's very light and rides high. But it's reliable, good on gas, cheap to work on, will go just about anywhere a big jeep can go etc. It's pretty fun, but not safe.
>>14138416
>but not safe
what would you suggest under $5k?
Is there anything that explains how a Honda automatic transmission works, since it's built different compared to other automatic transmissions?
>>14138003
No but it will implode prematurely
>>14138006
How? My 1990 Honda still has its original transmission after 290,000 miles.

Any diesel technicians/mechanics out there? Is working on these engines any more difficult that traditional gasoline engines? And is the pay a bit higher?
If you are doing basic preventative. Then it is easier. They design them for most things to be readily accessible . If you are doing failure repairs. It is a pain in the ass. Because everything weighs 4-8 times as much.
>>14137977
I second.
Once you're good at it, you can charge a whole fuckton more for the work though.
>>14137910

Does /o/ have any pictures of cars not sold in the US, in the US?
Yes, that is a Twingo with Illinois plates.

Hey /o/ my 2004 passat is having some front end issues that i cant figure out.
When im decelerating the steering wheel starts wobbling and shaking really bad, I know its coming from the front drivers side wheel because it starts making a really bad rubbing noise.
Would anyone have an idea as to what it might be? I was thinking a control arm bearing or wheel bearing but im not sure.
>>14137792
it makes a really bad rubbing noise while decelerating? when was the last time you changed your brakes?
>>14137825
I got the calipers and pads replaced in october.

Is body rust really so bad?
Is cancer really so bad?
Is arthritis really so bad?
nah weight reduction
just replace the panel later with a lighter material like aluminum or carbon fiber
Has anyone replace airbags in their car before?
>slid on ice, tapped railing
>bent bumper and broke headlight, but no actual damage to the car was done
I can get both used airbags and a sensor for 100$
Its one of those deals where the car isnt worth that much on the market, but you know the car was meticulously cared for so it would cost a decent amount of money for another car of the same caliber.
Ill probably drive it without airbags if it comes down to it.
Has anyone else actually done the repair?
>>14137514
What does a mechanic quote?
>>14137535

Its a 1995 corolla, their labor alone would cost double what the car is actually worth.

I wouldn't do it unless you REALLY know what the fuck you're doing.
