For me, it's pic related. I lived in complete anguish for half a year afterwards.

Where do I start with him? Is there a flow chart? I own GR, TCoL49, M&D, and Vineland.
V. -> Lot 49 -> GR -> M&D
The other ones aren't worth it
>>8519037
what about ATD?
>>8519079
Half is up to snuff, the other drags. If Pynchon's your boy, I'd say it's maybe worth it, but I'd just reccomend moving on to other postmodern lit at that point.
I recently read The Master and Margarita, which I really liked. Let's talk about it.
Did you like it?
Are Bulgakov's other books worth reading?
just got done it not so long ago, i loved it so much it became one of my favs. i couldnt put it down. Koroviev was the man

Pontius Pilate was a prefect not a procurator, book dismissed.
It was cheesy and disappointing
Fiction at its best is literally just baby tier philosophy with "muh pretty words" to try to make up for it. Prove me wrong.
>>8518932
Everything is just 'muh something'
Prove me wrong
>>8518932
Agreed. Literature should not be taught in schools.

How do I into Gnosticism?
What's the primary text(s) I should be working with, and what is the best secondary source on said primary source?
Radical Gnosticism is possibly the most terrifying idea of all time. Make sure you can handle it.

Christian gnosticism or gnosticism in general?

What is 'Radical Gnosticism?'
Hey /lit/, does an autobiography written by a fictional character count as an autobiography if I enter a contest for autobiographies?
>>8518863
>if I enter a contest for autobiographies
>Of a fictional character
You'd be disqualified.
It doesn't matter if this is a blue board or not, you can't stay/post if you're under age ;)
Only if you're James Frey.

No. But why tell?
So , knowing how concerned he was about the image about himself that he was projecting. Can we assume that all of his essays are probably works of fiction too?

Im pretty sure that 90% of "a supposedly fun thing..." Is pure bullshit
I bet that he never leaved his room
he wrote comic realism, even his essays were a bit comically exaggerated
I sent my novel out to ten beta readers, it is a chick lit novel, with some subversive elements slipped in. My beta readers were the target audience of 18-24 year old women. So their remarks totally ignore the nuance and genius of the work. Instead, they were like, the characters not likeable enough. 'the plot moves too fast' 'not enough character change' 'no overriding motivation' 'show dont tell' 'every scene needs a conflict'. I am so confused what to do because none of the novels in the canon meet the requirements of their checklist. I am simply above their league, but at the same time if I don't listen to them and dumb down my work, then my book will not land me any sales. Has anyone dealt with this sort of thing before?
It's not because books in the canon break those rules that yours starts off at the same level as the classics. They were breaking rules with mastery, while you might just be oblivious to those rules.
>>8518829
>letting betas read your books
>>8518829
Do you people never get tired of all these threads about women?
Holy shit that ending of The Brothers Karamazov was the saddest thing i've ever read.
God damn why is life so unfair. RIP my man.
Also, thoughts on the book? I'd definitely rate it 5/5 for Ivan and Alyosha's conversation and the Grand Inquisitor chapters + a few parts I really liked.
There was some parts that were a huge drag to get through, but that ending/epilogue and the few main highlights definitely made up for it.

which translation famalam?

P&V.
The red cover paperback.
I found big sections to be a slog through, and actually found the ending kind of sentimental and hamfisted. Still a beautiful, passionate book, but not a fan of the heavy handed philosophical dialogue

Do I need to read boring canon shit if I want to write to entertain?
I don't think you need to know about classical music if you want to be a pop song writer?
There's nothing wrong with writing for the plot.

Just dropping in to tell you to KYS.
>>8518764
>read?
no. if you want to know how shit a writer you are, then yes.
>pop?
above
>plot?
not if the plot has a point. otherwise, it doesn't matter.
if you think it will be boring, it will, because you will make it boring. don't bother, you will be better for not having read it.
go back to /co/ or reddit or wherever you came from and stay there.
ignorance is bliss.
>>8518764
>Do I need to read boring canon shit if I want to write to entertain?
You should read anything you can. /lit/ is phenomenally far up its ass in terms of what it calls "required reading," but every good writer knows that you can learn something about writing from consuming any work no matter its medium. Should you still read "boring canon shit?" Absolutely. Every aspiring writer should read Faulkner and Joyce.
>There's nothing wrong with writing for the plot.
Your question and this assertion don't have anything to do with each other.
What is your relationship with literature, anon?

How much do translations of philosophical works such as those of Plato & Nietzsche matter?
>>8518527
Define "matter," first
>>8518531
I mean, what am i going to get out of choosing one translator over another, surely they've all translated the works coherently?
>>8518534
>what am i going to get out of choosing one translator over another
Some are literal, some are accurate, and some are more poetic
The translator can completely transform the author's idea. It's not just putting the book into Google Translate
