Does anyone knows about a book, novel, or any media that its story takes place somewhere else than earth (including past or future settings) that is not fantasy, adventure or sci-fi? Thanks beforehand

Vonnegut's Thank You, Dr. Kevorkian takes place mostly in heaven. It is in the form of a series of interviews with people in heaven conducted while Vonnegut is repeatedly killed and revived by the doctor. All the figures are historical, some famous, some highly obscure, some who most would consider very "good" people, some who most would consider highly "evil". Good stuff and a quick read.

New to /lit/ I worte a poem.
Mental and physical pain beat me like a drum,
I'll just explode, get drunk and run away.
Pain is temporary, thats a blind lie fucker.
I dont understand me so how could you.
I'm sober for everyone but me, mechanical,
battery operated,
overheats easily,
fragile,
choking hazard.
Once its over does it even make a difference?
I can;t remember i better write it on myself.

And your message or how it sounds don't really make up for the form.

It's a bland empty cry that barely rises above the level of your average /r9k/ post. Poetry certainly comes from strong feelings, but if you just sloppily spill it out like that you'll get nowhere.

Why aren't we using our /lit/izenship to understand society structurally and functionally?

Maybe we could make a change if we understood all this better. Maybe create things and enlighten people like never before.

>21st century
>trying to change society through literature

People don't read any more friendo, and the internet has dramatically shortened everyone's attention span, ability to analyse arguments, and tolerance for ideas outside their comfort zone.
That's a big part of everything that's going on in society now. It's the age of cognitive dissonance, any book you write will be loved by people who already agree with what you're trying to say, and dismissed out of hand by those that don't. Nobody's mind would be changed.
>>
>Maybe we could
Maybe we couldn't
In fact
most likely we couldn't.

Society is gay anyway, so whatever.
>>
but i am. i were rather, cause in so doing i got to understand things, the 1st of which is that you cant directly say anything, but only through the imagination. which is art. and that took me back to the start.

anyway if you are saying that you must be likewise using your litizenship usefully. what have you learned?

I started browsing /lit/ in 2013 and the board may as well have been /pynchon/ - now not so much

what happened? is 4chan too right wing for him now? did the inherent vice movie release cause an influx of pynchon readers? did bleeding edge put him out of favor with you guys? is this all in my head?

1. Pynchon memes are getting stale
2. Barely anyone here has actually read GR thoroughly, so discussion is difficult

How about something to listen to in german? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpniYfOOwmk

other than that, pic related. a youth book to be sure, but I enjoyed it when I was little. And as a "kids" book it should be good for beginners for obvious reasons.

how do I come up with ideas for my book?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.

If you have to ask, you're doomed.

Seriously, though, just write about why you are struggling and you should be able to over come your writer's block. Just think about how you want your book to end, or the ultimate message you seek to express.
>>
>>8708322
either write something to entertain yourself and keep working until you're genuinely entertained or write something you need to do research into and then mediate from there. Good books combine the two
>>
Dear book, today i talked about you online. In fact i am doong just that at this moment. This is comfortable, i can see myself doing this in the near future as an enjoyable activity. I guess we'll be seeing a lot of each other now. Goodbye for now

I've been reading and enjoying more and more science fiction lately and have been recommended to read Isaac Asimov by a few friends who have enjoyed the books I too have.

I went ahead and looked on eBay and found an auction for 58 of his works.. I knew it seemed excessive, but it was cheaper than purchasing the 7-8 of the books of his I had been pointed towards separately.

So, what does /lit/ think should be the course of action here? Any particular titles in here that you highly recommend, or perhaps even titles that you've read and don't recommend I invest my time into right away?

As for the excessiveness.. I'm more than aware, it would certainly take something very special for me to grip to the same author for such an amount of books. We'll see, though. I'll probably distribute them throughout friends.

Well, I see you have some short story collections there, so dip your toes in with that. But you can't go wrong with the Foundation trilogy.
>>
Ubik is a must read in my opinion. I found Philip K. Dick hard to read in the beginning (and still do sometimes), but that book is great, and probably his best. His work grew on me over time. I would definitely recommend him.

Does this plot work:

A (wife), B (husband), C (detective)

Act 1
A discovers B is a murderer
C is investigating said murders
B provides the main voice /her discovery
B murders A

Act 2
C attempts to solve murders of B
(C ("becomes") protagonist post-death of A)
Standard investigation
C searches house of A+B
C discovers evidence left by A (on dictaphone)
Confrontation

Act 3
Wrap it up

Just a skeleton of course - I'd be grateful if you guys could tell me whether killing off the "main voice" of the novel in the first act would stop people reading
(that's why I've added the voice recording to retain her voice throughout the novel post-death)

I'm also trying to decide whether to have three first-person POVs rotating, or to have the detective as third-person - would this make her less likable to a readership??
Thanks a lot!

doh that should be "A provides the main voice /her discovery"
>>
Looks pretty sound, you would have to consider whether killing off the main voice be a transition or something that happens abruptly. You might have to find a balance between not creating such a jarring change and not tipping off your reader about the events to come (don't underestimatehow much people love to predict crime novels).
>>
You could pull it off through multiple viewpoint character 3rd person POV writing. Give us some scenes throughout act 1 with the detective as your viewpoint character and the transition will be seamless.
