I'm an avid reader. I regularly read non-fiction books about history, philosophy and psychology. I love reading because it gives me knowledge. Please give me a good reason to read fiction books. I just can't get into them.

Because it's filled with great stories that are beautifuly told.

I think by now if you don't find joy in story telling, then you probably never will.
>>
Why do you need a reason?

As a writer even I can admit film does what we do better and it's really come into its own the past twenty years. Though there's equally no reason you should watch film.

You only should if you want to. There's nothing wrong with you if you don't.

He's great but his long winded political correctness rants are a real drag, and that's coming from a feminist progressive. But on the whole he's golden. His book was excellent and it felt damn good when he had more or less the exact same opinion as me on Black Mirror and Stranger Things.
Wish he had a button on his site to switch it to regular casing.
>>
>>8784523
What might those opinions be?
>>
>>8784567
that Stranger Things has character motivation problems out the ass, and umbrage with Black Mirror's thematic concepts if I had to guess, based on the content of those editorials

Do you write? Have you ever find someone that shows interest in anything that you write? Someone who doesn't read it in a half assed manner and show real, genuine interest? Is finding someone who's willing to read the hardest part of all this?

Yes, I've been writing for years, both freelance articles and short fiction. So I've been published.

Thing is, I've had a hard time finding people in my everyday life who are interested in my writing. Family, friends, they all say, "that's nice" and move on.

I assume I'm just surrounded by illiterates. I need better friends and family.

Yes sadly. My ex used to critique my writings and then she left me. I don't think now i can go back to writing without instant feedback daily.

Start with Hamlet. If you ever feel like he's being tricky with some highfalutin philosophical contortions and you want to know what he's getting at, Google a reference.
>>
>>8784099

in a way, infinite jest contains most of the greeks. apart from Plato. you'll need to read him separately for obvious reasons

Serious question. I am a ambitious law student who wants to achieve the highest possible grades.

Passing my exams and knowing the answer is never a problem, professors arbitrarily cheating me out of 8+ grades is. They cut my grades for reasons which turn out to be arbitrary.

How do I stop this and achieve the highest possible grades? Being an asshole and filing complaints?

>>
>>8784048
in general, be more likeable and friendly towards them. everyone is biased towards people they like.

but i also think it's really unlikely that 8+ grades were taken away 'arbitrarily'. maybe you just dont understand the errors? or perhaps you're refusing to accept them?
>>
>>8784048

In Holland we use grades on a scale 1-10. No matter how much I work I get an 8. Grades are rounded down and up. Eg. a 8,5 is graded a 9. Getting a 9 or a 10 seems impossible due to arbitrary grading. I have gotten 9's and 10's but mostly BS 8's.

Are there any good modern science books that bring you up to speed on modern scientific discoveries?

What discipline? Science is too vast for modern discoveries to be truncated into a single book without losing massive amounts of content. Any single serious scientific exploration requires an entire book to fully elucidate, so even if one were to read the equivalent to "modern biological discoveries for dummies" all nuance would be lost, and you would be left with a reduction of content less useful than a day's worth of wikipedia-chaining the field.

How much did you guys improve visualization and imagination with reading?

Did your imagination became stronger? Can you easier make up stories?
Can you visualize (see in mind's eye) better?

So how much did you improve imagination, visualization and creativity?

I never imagined reading is supposed to improve your visualisation. All I see is letters, meaning play and rhythm.
>>
>>8783896

Don't you visualize while you read? No imaginary pictures in your head while reading a story?
In that case you might have aphantasia

I want to read existentialism authors like Nietzsche, Camus and Sartre. Do I need to read something before go right into 20th philosophy? I already saw some videos talking about these philosophers and I kinda know the context.

richard dawkins invented the term "meme" and wrote on the concept. god i love that man.

Self-proclaimed "internet enthusiasts" that browse their own sub-reddits do not meet the proper qualifications to write entire novels about memes.

Yes, OP. Dozens of these books exist out there. None are worth a dime.

Why can't you understand anything if you haven't read the greeks? Are you sure that everyone who wrote a decent book has read the greeks? Just asking, haven't read the greeks, and I'm not sure how it will help me understand other books.
